The Girl With The Mousy Hair

The fever and cold was manageable, but it wasn’t quite cured yet. Kudos to Jerome, he’d been an excellent nurse in her weeks of sickness, bringing hot soups and herbal teas, and bringing home far more than the suggested quantity of medications. She was better, but a night of chaos was out of the question.

(Y/N) figured she’d be in for a boring night, watching movies alone on the sofa while her boyfriend went out and had all the fun. Instead, Jerome surprised her, when he showed up with a cart of five large pumpkins.

“Surprise!” He exclaimed with a bow, drawing her from her pile of fuzzy blankets.

“Pumpkins?” (Y/N) asked, dragging herself up from the sofa with a lazy smile.

“Y’didn’t think I’d let you spend Halloween bored, did ya, toots?” He grinned as he lined them up on the table. They were all different shapes and sizes, no two alike - though one did significantly stand out from the others.

She turned it around for closer inspection. “Jerome… did you steal this?”

It had a detailed face already carved into its side, clearly something that had taken someone a few hours to complete. Jerome shrugged shamelessly. “I liked it.” He excused, pulling a few blades from some pockets in his long coat. “Now, grab a knife and get stabbin’, dollface.”

When had she ever missed an opportunity?

(Y/N) took a long knife from his hand, wielding it with skill, before she quickly brought it down and began sawing off the top. Jerome laughed in pleasure; he always did think she was hottest when she had a knife in hand.

Jerome followed along, telling her all the scary ideas he had for his pumpkins as he grabbed handfuls of cold guts to dump in a bowl. His first attempt was very simple; two triangle eyes and a large zig-zag mouth. He was a very creative man, but pumpkins take some getting used to. His next work of art was better, scarier; with squinting eyes that looked to be frowning, and a fanged grin that resembled his own. (Y/N) did a few in a similar fashion, with pointed teeth and sharp eyes.

A couple of hours later, with guts and seeds thrown about the messy table, and knifes wet with juice, the couple stood proudly before their masterpieces. “These are seriously good, J.” (Y/N) complimented, twirling her knife around in her sticky hands.

“You bet.” He grinned with his hands on his hips. “Okay, babycakes, pick out your favourite.”

(Y/N) hummed, inspecting the gourds before pointing the sharp tip of the blade at a large one second to the end of the row. It had two, kite-shaped eyes, a large mouth with dozens of long teeth, and tiny hearts and diamonds cut into the surface of the skin. “This one’s cute, don’cha think?”

“Sure is,” he laughed, taking the slimy knife from her hand and turning the pumpkin upside down, and before she could protest, he jammed the knife in the bottom and began cutting away.

“Jerome! The hell are you doing?” She gasped. “It’ll sink.”

“Not for long,” he said, taking off the bottom and holding the vegetable up to her. “Put it on your head.”

She stared at it, lips curling in disgust. “No way, it’s all gross in there.”

With a sigh and a roll of his eyes, the red-head went into the kitchen and retrieved a bowl to shove in the top. “There, now it’s a hat. On.” He insisted.

(Y/N) knew there was no way out of it, so instead of complaining, she simply went to wash her hands and tied back her hair. She let him slip the new, oversized mask on, surprised to notice he’d already sprinkled cinnamon inside to mask the smell (what a sweetheart), and adjusted it on her head. “Happy now?”

Jerome giggled at the sight. “Ecstatic.” He did the same with one of his own pumpkins, laughter barely muffled by his new, sharp grin. “Now, grab a knife, toots! We’ve got plans!”

“If we get caught and I get sent to jail smelling like pumpkin, I’m gonna be so mad at you.”

“Relax, sweets. It’ll be fun.”

They slinked through the shadows, sitting the last pumpkins down by the GCPD while no one was looking. They’d driven around town with a trunk full of stolen Jack o’lanterns (the majority stolen), planting them around the city with ‘an extra special candle’ inside.

The pumpkin headed couple scurried away, holding hands tight as they journeyed to the nearest tall building. (Y/N) quite liked being a masked couple on Halloween; no one knew who was behind the costume, no one ran afraid unless they wanted them to.

“Alrighty, pumpkin,” Jerome tried out the new nickname, swaying their hands between them as they stood on the roof of the dilapidated apartment block. “Ya ready?”

“Ready, J.” She smiled from behind the kite-eyed mask, sharing his excitement.

With a quick countdown, Jerome held up the detonator, clicking the button with added flair. Just a second later, the first explosion went off in the distance, followed by screams and sirens. Another came from about a mile away, then another, and another. Jerome laughed that maniacal laugh that always had her shaking in excitement; it always meant a thrill.

Hands still in his, he spun her around to admire her silhouette in the light of the nearest explosion, then pulled her in for a dip, leaning his pumpkin head down to kiss hers.
