And I cried. For a while. I took a long break from writing, and almost stopped entirely, until my friends assured me that my story wasnt that bad and that that comment was ridiculous.

Ik the original post is about this site, and im talking about ao3, but hate comments and unprompted criticism and 'advice' are a problem in both places.

If you are in a fandom that makes a lot of art and stories, some of that stuff isnt going to be to your taste. But tearing apart everything you don't love and completely agree with just leads to empty fandoms comprised of people who would create all sorts of things if they hadn't been discouraged by hate.
