Used the the "X" and compass method (note X lines on original image at right) for image transfer to teach photorealistic drawing. Along with consistent harping on my part about using a full range of values this produced success for nearly every student.
Here's another picture of bisque fired luminaria candle lanterns my students made. With the feet, teeth light holes, cut so top can be removed the project requires a lot of beginning students, but is doable and rewarding for them.
This was a pretty successful project for my HS ceramic class. Students learned good control of clay as a medium plus they were able to engage their imagination. The final glazed and fired lanterns worked really well.
One of my ceramic students starts to get the hang of the potter's wheel.
