A/n: I was bored so yes, Gato in war.

Distant screams. Even deep in the wet trenches you could hear the distant screams of those abandoned in ‘No man’s land’ Left to fend for themselves against the rain of gunfire. They dragged their feeble bodies through the dirt, clinging onto pitiful hope before a bullet went straight through their noggin. Then blood splatter. Then a hopeless, cold and drenched corpse. A once lively person now a meal for the rats and insects to tear into. For the maggots to burrow into the warm insides of the freshly dead. To leech off the remaining hints of previous life.

Ogata just hoped they didn’t die near the deep trenches they all hid in, having their bodies hanging on the barbed wire over where they slept. The wrenched smell of the dead was something he’d never get used to. It was like this day and night. Under the sky, under the sun and moon. People fought. People died. People were killed. Just the way war was.

The insistent gunfire ceased. The Russians on the other side seeming to have stopped for no good reason. As if someone had yanked on the reins of their gunfire like stubborn horses. The sudden eerie silence of gunfire did not soothe his frayed nerves nor did it soothe Private Usami who was a few feet away, he seemed angsty, rocking in his spot. He looked around, Feline-like eyes sluggishly flicking side to side. Eyes scanning the battered soldiers alongside him in this hell who were a few good feet away leaving him to sulk alone. Their eye’s sunken into their skull, tired, deprived of any shred of dignity they once had before all of this. Ready to place golden coins over their eyes and drift along the nyx.

He shifted in his spot, feet rooted deep in the wet soil. Even his clothes had dirt caked into the fabric. Cradling his gun close to his chest, the cold metal long rusted. Nothing his simple cloth could do now. Ogata fiddled with the mechanics, trying to salvage what was left of the gun. Hoping it would last a bit more trickle of time in this battle field. Praying the trigger wouldn't jam on him.

Ogata rummaged through his pocket. He only had a few bullets left. He bounced them in the palm of his hand, gently tossing them in the air as he counted. One.. two.. Three.. Not much remained. Being without bullets here was like damning yourself to death.

His head slowly turned to look at Private Usami who was a few feet away and then at the growing pile of corpses. Unhinged jaws. Brainmatter all over the dirt. Gouged out eyes now home to the infestation of maggots. Perhaps he could scour the dead’s corpse for any remaining bullets, so he propped his gun up against the trench walls.

Once the others were out of sight, doing who knows what. Crouched down low the sniper stalked over towards the sea of cadavers, head downcasted. The stench grew stronger as he neared closer, nose crinkling at the horrid smell. Rotting flesh emitting such a pungent smell. Fishing into his pockets for a second his hand went up to plug his nostrils with a once white cloth now stained a brownish red. Dried blood.

The buzzing of flies were insistent, the droning of the pesky insects growing louder as he rummaged through the pockets of the dead. He propped a corpse up against the dirt wall, one hand searched while the other held the fabric to his nose.

This was the corpse of a man he knew. Well. sorta. He had held a few conversations with the man – mostly one sided, all he did was listen as he rambled on. He had kids, a wife, but he wasn't innocent. That day he died, Ogata watched the way his gammy leg failed him from a past injury. Now he was nothing but a corpse. A corpse to be raided. Ogata had a hand patting down the fabric, searching for anything of use as the other pressed the torn cloth to his nose, shoving his nostrils deeper into the fabric.

Annoyance took over after minutes of searching the dead man and a few other corpses. Had the others already pillaged these ones? “Tsk..’’ Ogata couldn’t help but scoff in frustration, there was really nothing of use here. With a shove he tossed the body aside, watching the corpse slump forward and bending at the waist. The remaining of its gust spilling into a pile of red ribbons on the floor. Crawling over the floor like red centipedes, an infestation of them. An infestation of the dead, the rot, everything.

With a huff he laid back against the wall, scooting back to make some distance from the dead. Slowly reaching out to cradle his temporarily abandoned gun back into his arms. Holding tightly onto the useless junk like a lifeline.

Soon it grew to be night once more, but War never rested, bullets flew through the dark like shooting stars. Screams of those abandoned on the battlefield never seemed to yield, their cries for help echoing throughout the cold trenches. The moon gazing down at their suffering — watching them writhe on the floor in agony, their flesh torn to bits like tattered cloth.

Hanging off the exposed bone with nothing but hopes and wishes. Their own skin hanging off like a fleshy coat. They dragged their corpses through the field, daunting faces and hollowed eyes pleading for mercy that came in the form of a land mine or a stray bullet. Nobody would waste a bullet for one that was already deemed to be dead by morning. Mercy wasn’t needed, when you needed to conserve bullets more than have morals.

As the moon creeped closer, its white blank stare gave just enough light to give you the hope of some sight. Having no luck as to finding bullets, he decided to try his luck somewhere else. Perhaps scavenge the surrounding area.

Carefully steadying himself up he carefully awaited for a time where the rain of bullets seemed to pause. The silence let the night howl as he whisked away, leaving the trenches to search the surrounding area. He walked past the corpses and soon to be. He crept throughout the midst of the cold wind, careful to not alert the Russians that laid near, ready to snap their jaws.

As he padded throughout the area, the feline scouting the area seeking food to extinguish the rumble in his belly. Searching for rations that were nothing but a fabled tale — Huddling near the trees, walking amongst their tall midst and dense ranks he ran into what could only be described as the living dead. A man, eyes hanging by the strings, face peeled off as it was nothing but a mask to the bone beneath he stomped towards the sniper.

Words jumbled by the unhinged jaw, Ogata raised the gun. Pointing at the dead, he fired.

Maybe he should head back.

Grey clouds drifted in the sky, sprinkling buckets of snow that danced with the cold winds until they massed into piles of snow. They walked on the paths carved onto the land. Maquia had decided to take out little Ariel to experience the snow, his little 6 year old self ready to face the cold and jump into the soft white piles of snow.

“Thanks Mama.” Ariel smiled in gratitude, a wide toothy grin plastered onto his face as he tugged the hat down to cover his frozen-solid ears.

Maquia and Ariel’s attention was ripped from each other as a throng of birds flew over their heads, wings spread out wide to the sky. All gliding towards the same direction. Migrating perhaps.

“Look at the bird’s mommy!” Ariel bolted after them on foot, hands high in the sky as if he was soaring amongst their ranks. Short legs carried him as far as they could before his mother shouted for his return. Wishing for him to stay in her sight.

Ariel paused, looking back at his worried mother. Maquia clutched her coat high to her chin, golden hair weaved in the sky as the winds grew stronger, her shining ruby eyes laced with worry.

“Coming!” He shouted back at his mother’s recall. Leaving the ranks of the soaring birds and darting back to his mother into her tight embrace.

“That’s a great name, Ariel.” She said with a curve of the lips, a wide smile overtaking her gentle features in a great conquest of joy. Ariel smiled at the praise, a flower of euphoria blooming in his chest, its vines encroaching to his small heart, letting a wave of elation wash over its fragile beating life.

“Shall we go home?” She asked, offering her mittened hand. Ariel nodded, silent confirmation as he locked hands with her, walking on their old tracks on the snow. Now mostly faded from the fresh coat of snow painted onto these lands by the dusty clouds in the sky.

As they walked he looked back, waving goodbye to the cold man, his smile wide.
