Cashton Soils Contest 2015

On July 10th Cashton FFA hosted its soils contest at the Gerry and Ann Klinkner Farm. FFA members from five different chapters competed in the contest. Members participating in the contest evaluated land on different uses by examining criteria of erosion, invasive species, slope, soil structure, and soil texture.

Why agriculture may someday take place in towers, not fields

The future of farming is looking up—literally, and in more ways than one: There are grow towers, rooftops, and industry talk of Waterworld-style “plant factories” in futuristic floating cities. And this vertical movement is happening for a variety of reasons. For one, by prioritizing localized operations, it offers a remedy to the mounting economic difficulties that independent farmers face when otherwise so easily underpriced by Big Ag. But more importantly, it’s rising out of environmental concerns—space, soil health, climate change, vital ecosystems decimated by monoculture. According to the professor of environmental health sciences Dickson Despommier in his article “The Vertical Farm: Reducing the Impact of Agriculture on Ecosystem Function and Services,” we should expect over the next 50 years for the human population to reach 8.6 billion, requiring an additional growing area “roughly the size of Brazil.”

Hydrovillage, a project set up by students at City University London, has beaten more than 100 other teams to make the final 4 at a national social enterprise competition. The McKinsey Venture Academy competition is open to undergraduates and postgraduates across the UK and encourages students to turn ideas into social enterprises that make a difference.

Set up by nine City students, Hydrovillage is a project to design hydroponic systems and send them to people in areas of the world affected by soil infertility, providing them a way to feed themselves and their families, while also teaching them business skills. Hydrovillage was set up as part of Green Dragons, a City sustainability leadership programme commissioned by NUS Students’ Green Fund scheme that provides support and funding to students with sustainability project ideas. The project is also supported by Enactus, a student run, non-profit organisation located across 35 countries.

The 2015 soils contests have begun early this year. Cashton sent three members to the 40th Annual Trempealeau County Soils Contest May 14th. Sierra Hanley, Alex Hurtz, and Trevor Hemmersbach made up the senior soils team. Sierra Hanley was the second highest scoring individual at the contest and the team placed third. The team will now set its sights on the Cashton FFA Soils Contest, Green County Soils Contest, and State Soils Contest this summer.
