"Was there something I could be helping you with? Or should I just shoot you right now?" Rick's voice, carried towards the shadow near the window of his study, from his spot in the doorway. It was becoming entirely too common for strangers to end up in his home. Leaving him on constant edge when he shouldn't have had to be.
Firsts || Rick and Evy
Evy stood in front of the mirror in the parlor. It was a cramped little room, stuffed with books and trinkets collected on various digs - and from several less reputable sources thanks to a certain brother of hers. But it was home all the same. The tiny flat in Cairo was warm and comfortable, not like the distant, chilly family home waiting for them back in England. Too much empty space in that house now their parents were gone. They’d moved to Egypt several years ago when Evy got the job at the museum and Jonathan was keen to dabble in archeology - long before the days of mummies and curses and Hamunaptra.
And a certain Mr. Rick O’Connell.
Evy bit her lip at her reflection and pulled at a few wayward curls. Oh, come now! Should it really be this difficult to look the slightest bit presentable?! And stop caring so much, you silly little thing! She’d spent a longer time that she’d ever care to admit picking out just the right dress for this evening. Not to mention all the trouble she’d gone to in order to tame her reckless curls. Of course, they were hardly inclined to behave. Tonight of all nights! With a resigned sigh, she took a step back from the mirror to get a better view of herself. Evy puffed out a breath. She supposed it would have to do! The rational part of her brain told her that he wouldn’t care a jot if a hair was out of place or her skirt wasn’t exactly the right length for the latest fashions. Under any other circumstance, she wouldn’t have cared herself. And these past few weeks - since their return from that fateful trip to Hamunaptra - Rick had done nothing but look at her like she hung the moon. But that hardly stopped a girl from being a little nervous. Not when he was taking her out properly for the first time tonight!
Of course, they’d spent practically all their time together since their return. The kisses they’d shared in the desert sunset all those weeks ago hadn’t gone to waste. They really seemed quite unable to stay away from each other! He would visit her at the museum and steal a kiss from behind dusty shelves. She would watch as he cleaned his guns, teasing him about always being prepared for the worst. And there was no denying the state of things. Not anymore. Evy had fallen desperately in love with him. And she was certain he felt the same. She may not be the most experienced in the ways of romance, but she was quick enough to see something like that! Even if he hadn’t said as much. But, despite all that, somehow they hadn’t gotten around to - well - Evy supposed one would call it a date. Until tonight.
Evy spun on her heel away from the mirror, pacing in front of the fireplace. He’d be here any minute. Idly, she found herself chewing at her thumbnail. Oh for heaven’s sake girl! Evy rolled her eyes at herself. You saw him a few hours ago! When had the sensible, rational Evelyn turned into an eager schoolgirl with a crush? She lifted her chin a bit defiantly. She was a grown woman and would handle herself as such!
But then there was a firm knock on the door. A grin spread across Evy’s face and she made her way towards the front door, pulling open the latch. She beamed up at the face on the doorstep. The one she’d been so waiting to see. “Hello, you,” Evy said, grin still firmly in place. She cast an appreciative glance at him in his fine clothes. “My! You do clean up well, don’t you, Mr. O’Connell?” she said, mischievously. But her breath had hitched ever so slightly. He really was quite handsome, if she did say so herself….
Could it really be tonight? After so much time gone by, or so it felt, the sand in the hour glass had dwindled down to this moment. It could have been yesterday the way the world moved around him. Just yesterday that he'd first seen her beautiful face, the face filled with such wonder, such mischief. The kind of woman who wasn't afraid to be herself or to drag a man such as him out of Jail to fight an army she'd awaken from the dead. Yesterday, the day when he first brushed the hair out of her face and lifted her chin to make sure she was unharmed, to bask in her beauty. All the yesterdays that had let to this moment. To the present that held so many secrets and unknown outcomes. Today would determine if there would really be one hundred thousand tomorrows. And he wasn't about to let something so wonderful elude him if he could help it.
It had only taken an hour for Rick to bath and change, his hair combed and parted, clothes fixed and slipped on as he hid a couple of weapons upon himself for good measure. In the physical he was prim, primed and ready for his magical night to begin. In the case of mentality however, well that was a different story. After he'd woken up that morning from a rather stomach turning dream, his mind hadn't shut up since, well except for when he'd met Evy for lunch still though. His thought's were back to whizzing about, filling him full of doubt, hell he'd fought the undead and saved the world, but the mere mention of taking the woman he spent every waking moment with on a real date had him up in arms. It was as if every nerve in his body was on fire, screaming at him not to mess this up because he'd never have it better. And he knew it was true, Evelyn was the sun to his dark, dark life. She was everything good and more than he deserved, but god himself knew O'Connell wouldn't give up so easily.
Taking another hour to pace about his small room, he finally gathered himself and his things and hit the streets. The fresh air filling his lungs as he ambled slowly towards the apartment complex near the museum. The walk was no more than fifteen minutes at a normal pace but it took him 40, his mind and body needing the extra time to calm down before he picked his lovely date up. Making his way up the short flight of stairs Rick came face to face with Evy's front door, a deep breath drawn in as he had, before his arm was being lifted and his fist met the cold wood in a firm 'Thud'. Just breathe man, you'll be fine, there's nothing to worry about, the girls head over-heels for you get your shit together! He bellowed in his mind as he heard the soft foot falls moving towards the door. His earlier breath escaping him as his eyes danced over the gorgeous woman standing in front of him. A smile gracing his lips as she spoke.
"Hello yourself." He winked, before his eyes began trailing her from head to toe. "Well you know I dabble." He chuckled before reaching a hand out to touch her face. "You look.." He searched for the right word. "Breathtaking." and it was true, she took his breath away. "Now, shall we? Don't want to be late for our dinner reservation." He slid his free hand to her's, clasping it lightly, his thumb tracing circles as he awaited her response.

"Mister Rick O’Connell, I was just expecting you. Come along, the game is afoot.”
"Mr. Holmes." Rick's eyebrows shot up, at the familiar voice and face coming into view. "Funny, you're the last person I would have expected to see here." He crossed his arms. "Game what game?" He blinked a couple times calling out as he followed quickly behind the thinner man who'd begun to wander off.
