seeing 1500 comments on the insta post announcing Britta Curl to Detroit and it's so much "oh I guess I won't be going to games" "oh I guess I'm cancelling my season ticket deposit" oh okay and then donating that money to a nonprofit/mutual aid fund that supports trans people, right? and advocating for the league to create a gender inclusion policy, right?
the way pwhl fans have made Britta Curl the scapegoat for the league will never not piss me off, not because I agree with her beliefs, but because by scapegoating one player and directing all your attention to loudly hating her you don't actually do anything real.
Also, aside from the fact that Britta Curl is not the only player with her beliefs in the league, I actually don't think yelling at the league to fire her is productive! I actually don't think a business should be allowed to discriminate against employees based on their political beliefs! I think that's a dangerous precedent to set, personally!
Like you don't have to spend your money in support of a franchise with players who are loud about politics you don't agree with. But saying they don't deserve to pay their bills and feed themselves is not exactly the most progressive take either.
I am once again coming #onhere to remind people that if you don't love trans people more than you hate transphobes your outrage is performative at best and I'm tired of seeing it constantly in pwhl fan spaces
White women get so much grace lol this post in itself is performative but we won't get into that. Imagine thinking a transphobic person shouldn't be fired abd saying that her discrimination against trans people is a "political belief". Only white women get to have their bigotry categorized as simply having a "different political belief". You're accusing others that have called for her to get fired performative while calling her bigotry a political belief, y'all don't actually care for trans people. What have you done but whine at people who actually are doing something?!
If you had looked at my blog for like, two seconds before reblogging this with the most inane addition I've ever seen, you would've seen that:
1. im trans
2. I developed an entire guide to emailing to league to hold them accountable for developing and implementing the gender inclusion policy they promised several years ago now, and have promoted it incessantly since december
3. I pledged and donated for every point and PIM of Curl's to an org that uplifts lgbtq people in hockey and posted receipts to my blog at the end of the season
Meanwhile, I did take a look at your blog, which indicated to me that
1. you are not an active member of the pwhl fan community on Tumblr
2. you like to start shit with random people for apparently no reason
so I'll simply be blocking you. but for anyone else who sees this and is interested in a structural analysis of what's happening here:
There is a difference between being prejudiced and discriminating against people. Saying that Britta Curl "discriminates against" trans people is inaccurate. She's prejudiced, yes, but right now we have no evidence at all that she has, for example, denied someone a job because they are trans. And yes, precision and accuracy of language here matter because we're talking about systems and structures of oppression, which necessarily involves discussing power.
On that note, yes, I do believe that people should not be fired for their political beliefs and prejudices, actually. Because if we were to say "I think people who are prejudiced against me shouldn't be allowed to hold employment", under the current system we live in, who do you think is going to use that? the right will immediately latch onto that and use it as a tool to further oppress marginalized communities by arguing that those communities are prejudiced against them.
Like this is a very very basic structural analysis of the current sociopolitical climate in North America right now. What this other poster is saying is analogous to when people say "I think it's okay that the police use deadly force against suspected terrorists" and the immediate follow up question HAS to be okay, and who has the power to define who "terrorists" are? Because right now that's the federal government, and right now the federal government has decided that any and all racial minorities and queer (specifically trans) people count as terrorists, and they have the power to make our lives more difficult! If you say, "I think a person with [a specific set of] political beliefs deserves to be fired", and that's allowed to fly, okay great! you can bet your ass that that exact same rhetoric is going to be used by the people currently in power to immediately harm folks who are already on the bottom of the power hierarchy.
Anyways if anyone is interested in actually good faith discussions about conservative politics in women's sports I am more than happy to have them! But perhaps take a scroll through my blog to get caught up first.
