I kneeeeeew you were gonna pick this one I KNEW it.
The premise is, of course, that it's 1885 and Doc is a palaeontologist who heads out to Hill Valley in search of a major fossil find. While there, he hires local boy Marty as an assistant after catching him nosing about the dig-site. They spend their time trying hastily excavate a mosasaur skeleton while blatantly lying about their work, and avoiding the attentions of Tannen and his gang, who have been hired by rival academics to locate fossils (a la the Bone Wars).
This second part is uh. Looking like it's going to be a monster. Like, to put everything in that I want to, it will be HUGE. It's all Marty's POV, unlike the first fic which was all Doc's. It focuses a lot on his relationships with Doc, his family, and Jennifer, and who he wants to be, as the excavation progresses, and as Biff gets more and more suspicious.
“Doc’s a surveyor.”
Tannen looked blank.
It took Marty physical effort to rid his voice of disdain. It would do him no good to get his lights punched out by a guy holding him up by his bandana. “A geologist?” he tried again.
Tannen's face darkened. “Don’t go using all fancy Old States words—”
“He looks at rocks,” said Marty, “and decides if we should put a mine there.”
Marty could practically see the gears in Tannen’s tiny brain grating together as he thought about all two and a half pieces of information he’d gathered. It looked like hard work. But something must have eventually clicked, because his grip tightened, and he pulled Marty up onto his tiptoes. Just in time too, as a few more seconds and Marty's knee would have acquainted itself violently with Tannen's groin.
“I’m watchin’ you,” he promised.
Didn’t know you could do that ‘n breathe at the same time is what Marty would have liked to say. He settled instead for, “Right.”
Tannen’s gaze moved to something in the stable behind him.
“Nice horse.”
Chew gravel. “Thanks,” Marty replied.
