Tomorrow was Minghao’s birthday
Tomorrow you would go eat dinner at his house and celebrate his birthday as a surprise because ‘he hadn’t seen you in so long and was becoming cranky’
Probably ‘omg he misses me? Maybe... just maybe, we can make it work...?’
But as soon as those thoughts came to your mind you instantly tried to make them vanish
He was clear enough, you should stay away from him
You asked your friends to get a few drinks the day before because honestly, you were so scared of his reaction
You wanted to get your mind somewhere else
And surprise surprise it worked!
Dancing and singing with your friends made you forget all about your worries
You walked back (just a little tipsy) to your house and passed the wall again where you first met Minghao
Something was a little off though
Besides many more new drawings, probably Minghao’s, you saw that the heart was still there
The creepily realistic one covering your first comment
Only well... There had already been two layers of paint of top of that heart? How was is on that exact place again?
You started to wonder if Minghao actually knew the comment written in sharpie had been yours...
Well I guess you could ask him tomorrow
But when getting closer to the heart you realised it was slightly different, there was a date written in one of the arteries
Of course the date of when you had written the comment, he was really way more sentimental than he made it appear, he was just bad at showing it sometimes
Anyway you were feeling cold and decided to quickly go home
Something you realised is that even though your dad is a Black Jet, you could walk through every alley in this city and never have anyone bother you
You hoped it was because of Minghao but you thought it could just as well be because of your dad being an ass
Those thoughts didn’t keep you up for long as you quickly drifted off in a slightly intoxicated sleep
When you woke up the realisation hit you immediately that you’d do something stupid today
You regretted saying yes big time, but on the other hand you would regret it even more if you didn’t go to his house
Sadly it was a Saturday which meant no work to distract you
You decided you’d go a bit earlier as well because his mom said “Before 5 pm”
This means you would be able to maybe set up some stuff before he got there, that would maybe calm your nerves
You took your time to get ready and arrived at 4pm at his house
When you arrived at the door you started wondering... Should you ring the bell? Maybe he was at home but just not in his room? Why had you not asked for more info? Jeez
You decided to knock and wait... No answer... So you decided to go look through one of the windows where you saw his mom in the kitchen, making what seemed a delicious dish
She quickly noticed you and went to open the door
“Oh I didn’t hear the bell ring! I’m so sorry the radio must’ve been too loud.”
“Oh no I knocked because I was afraid Minghao was home now and I had to be quiet.”
“Oh he is! But my idea was you could just go surprise him in his room! Come inside sweetie or else the warmth will escape.”
“Oh okay sure! I’ll go upstairs and surprise him. Thanks for letting me come over by the way.”
You were hoping you’d surprise him with his family next to you so his reaction would be milder if he would get angry...
Well here goes nothing...
You walked up the stairs quietly. You immediately recognised his door and decided to just go for it and not even knock
There Minghao was sitting behind his desk, drawing. He had music playing in his headphones so he probably didn’t hear you come up the stairs either
He had his back turned to you so he hadn’t even noticed you, he did seem to hear you calling his name
He threw off his headphones and turned his head at the speed of light
“Y/N! What-the uuhh... What are you doing here? How?”
“I came to surprise you for your birthday... Your mom invited me because she knew how you struggled not seeing your girlfriend for so long?” You tiled your head as if expecting an explication
Were those his cheeks getting redder?
“I didn’t have the heart to tell my mom, she loves you and I thought it would be easier because I could deny it all. Honestly it all just got more painful being reminded that you’re my ex and having to lie about it.”
“So I guess this is gonna be a one time thing given our situation?”
He looked like a kid whose disney balloon just popped
“Oh, yeah stupid of me, just one evening like before? To say goodbye I guess...”
You immediately hugged him tightly, as you’ve wanted to for so long
He still wore the same colone
“Minghao you do know that I’d do anything to make this work, but we both know it’s kind of impossible...”
When you broke off the hug you could see his eyes filling with tears
His voice was hoarse when he spoke “I know, it’s just I didn’t think I could- I could miss someone this much. I don’t want you to leave again.”
You held his face in your hands
“I’m staying the night is that okay?”
He nodded while he trying his best to keep it together
Minghao had mostly been pretty good at keeping his emotions hidden but it all seemed to spill out now
“So how has the gang-life been for my badboy?”
“The feud between my gang and your dad’s gang has worsened honestly. I try keeping out of it because they obviously hold a grudge against me. So I focus more on drawing and spray painting.”
“About graffiti, did you know that comment in sharpie was mine? Because there is this new heart over it.”
“Yeah I knew from the beginning... I mean your cover up was pretty obvious.” he laughed silently
He knew and he still cares...
You two basically chatted up until Minghao’s parents called you both downstairs
The mood had bettered immensely and it was you were still together and nothing had happened in the past few months
You two might have sneaked in a few kisses... maybe more than kisses...
Luckily the food that mother Xu served was delicious so you didn’t have to pretend to like it
The evening went on and eventually you two retreated to his room to get some sleep, he handed you a shirt to sleep in that he remembered you liked because it was so soft
You laid together in his king sized bed, talking about useless stuff like ‘what would happen to a werewolf on the moon?’ or ‘how we take it for granted that we’re the only mammals that can make fire’ while spooning
Until Minghao suddenly dropped the bomb
“What’s gonna happen after today though?”
“We go back to before Hao... Maybe don’t tell your parents I broke up right away, I don’t want them to think I broke up on your birthday.” You added with an awkward laugh
“I don’t want this to be the end of us. What- what if we met only at night? I could do with meeting only Friday or Saturday nights because I know you got a job and all.”
“Minghao... listen to yourself, you know this doesn’t have a future. You will always be tied with your gang and I am still my father’s child.”
You knew he was accepting it but anything but happy with it
“Come on badboy let’s just enjoy this last night together before it’s over.”
“I don’t think I’ll be sleeping tonight then...” He started kissing your neck tenderly
You moved his hands under your shirt, his touch seemed surprised at the fact that you didn’t wear a bra “I always forget you take it off to go to bed.” he whispered in your ear
“Let’s be quiet though I mean your parents are home.”
“You never have to see them again after tonight so what does it really matter?”
You blushed at the thought but you knew he couldn’t see your red cheeks
Still it hadn’t been a loud night because you were afraid of seeing them in the morning before leaving
It had indeed been one of the best nights spent together
After all it had indeed been the last
Once every blue moon you’d see Minghao again on the streets, he always acted like he hadn’t seen you
The first few times it broke you but you quickly realised it was for the best and probably some kind of coping mechanism for Minghao
Eventually you saw him hanging out with another girl, you were happy he had moved on
But you two never forgot, the true love you had encountered
