Mount Whateverest- the Highest Band on Earth
The members of the California rock band Mount Whateverest have been to the apex of apathy. 5 kids from nowhere with a rock & roll dream, they were weaned on the glittery hits of Bowie, T. Rex and the Stones with doses of Spacemen 3, Blondie and the Troggs thrown in. Singer/guitarist Chris Streng (ex-Stratford 4) provides the witty stage banter while Jonah Wells (ex-Jeepster) and Steven Melendez share the drum and bass duties. Singers Sasha Soukup and Cynthia Harrell invoke the great girl groups like the Ikettes and the Shangri-Las. Together they form a real-life glam rock Voltron, a powerful force for musical good that’s more than the sum of it’s parts.    Hailing from the sleepy Sierra foothill town of Nevada City, they’ve built a unique sound that’s both stylistically and geographically removed from the contemporary indie rock scene. While most bands are content to stand still and complain onstage, Mt Whateverest are a rock-powered party machine, capable of turning even the most indifferent crowd into screaming fools. While they avoid most of the classic rock clichés, they still adhere to the ethos that music is made for dancing and socializing. This isn’t a quiet, sad band with a broken heart. They may have a chip on their shoulder, but they’re here to unify the crowd in the name of fun.     Naming the band Mount Whateverst gave them a built-in failsafe against pretension. How can anyone take this too seriously? They dress in loud, tacky colors, they sing about candy money; they’ve wrapped their dreams in a dense cloud of nonchalance. But like any proper joker, they’ve got a cleverly concealed core, one made up of relentless pop hooks, clever wordplay and dance moves designed to get the crowd involved. By removing themselves from the mainstream, they’ve discovered something far more precious than success.    With the release of their upcoming second album, Electric City, Mount Whateverest are ready to take their schtick to the world stage. This collection of original songs span the emotional spectrum from bleary-eyed lust (’Nothing On My Mind’) to outright punk ferocity (’Do It Right’). The album’s centerpiece, ’Electric City’ is a churning, droning exploration of the seductive dangers of city life.    Very few humans have actually climbed Mount Everest. The thin air, treacherous slopes and Yetis tend to weed out all but the most dedicated climbers. Similarly, the members of Mount Whateverest are rare birds, devoted to proving that the impossible can be done. Armed with electric guitars and equal parts determination and dementia, they can transform a standard night out into a truly transcendent rock and roll adventure.    Â
