charles fenton flame was vacationing in caracas ,   venezuela at the time when he first met gus’s future mother ,   maria gabriella lopez .   they fell in love ,   slept together ,   &  stayed together until charles had to return to los angeles ,   california for work .   even though he never returned to venezuela ,   he checked in regularly with maria via weekly phone calls until maria realized she was pregnant .   after this realization ,   she stopped returning any of charles’ calls ,   afraid of what he would say or what he would think of her if she told him she was pregnant with his child .   as a result ,   charles never found out about gus ,   &  gus never met his biological father .

maria never wanted a child .   she never liked children  &  only thought a baby would infringe upon her current lifestyle .   however ,   given that there was no method to abort the baby safely ,   she grudgingly gave birth to a baby boy .   she named him gustavo ,   after her own father who had died several years prior to her meeting charles .   shortly after gus’s birth ,   maria took upon charles’ surname flame ,   despite the fact that they weren’t married to each other .   she believed that he’d marry her eventually given their intimacy with each other ,   &  changing her last name to his would give him insight into her desire for long term commitment .

however ,   when gus reached the age of 7 ,   maria received a phone call with news that charles had been found by his 5 year old son hanging from the ceiling fan in his bedroom .   devastated ,   maria goes to the united states with gus to attend the funeral .   upon arriving ,   she found out that not only charles was married ,   but was also sleeping with 5 other women before he met maria .   the reason he took his own life was unknown ,   but it was assumed that the guilt of cheating on his wife got to him .

at the funeral ,   gus met his half brother steven ,   charles’ son with his wife fiona ,   &  his half sister whitney ,   charles’ daughter with lauren ,   another one of the women he was sleeping with .   gus got along with steven fairly quickly ,   but was pushed away by both whitney and her mother when he first attempted to greet them .

during the will reading ,   it is revealed that charles had listed maria over all other women ,   including his own wife ,   to inherit his house ,   his car  &  his finances .   maria’s anger towards the affair subsided as she comes to believe that she was charles’ favorite mistress .   furious with the outcome ,   fiona demanded that maria hand over the inheritance .   maria refuses ,   &  eventually ,   a fight breaks out .

however ,   while chaos ensues ,   all gus can think about is the mysterious phrase at the bottom of his father’s will .   “ nevermore ”   what does it mean ?   he can’t stop thinking about it ,   even after him  &  his mother get kicked out of the funeral by fiona .

after the funeral ,   maria decides to stay in the united states  &  give gus up to the foster care system .   she ultimately blamed gus for charles’ death ,   &  put him in foster care in hopes of never seeing him again .

from age 7 to 13 ,   gus stayed with the rodriguez family .   the rodriguez family consisted of carlos rodriguez ,   his foster father ,   janet rodriguez ,   his foster mother ,   &  cassie rodriguez ,   their adopted daughter .   gus quickly came to love them .   some of his favorite childhood memories are picking flowers with cassie ,   learning mechanics with carlos  &  cooking tequeños ,   his favorite food ,   with janet .   for the first time ,   gus felt truly loved  &  safe in his living environment ,   for even as a infant ,   he was severely neglected by maria ,   who never wanted him in the first place .

however ,   this happy chapter of his life with his foster family suddenly came to a tragic end .   a fire engulfed their home in flames ,   killing his entire foster family ,   &  leaving him with burns across his body  &  his face .   the only reason he survived was through the use of his foster father’s gas mask ,   which he used at the nuclear plant he worked at .   ever since the accident ,   gus has kept  &  worn the mask like a second face .

after the accident ,   gus is returned to the care of his biological mother ,   maria .   he finds that steven is under maria’s care as well ,   as fiona ,   steven’s mother ,   has gone missing under mysterious circumstances .

during their time staying with maria ,   the two of them faced severe verbal ,   emotional ,   &  physical abuse ,   gus getting the worst of it .   on gus’s 13th birthday ,   he attempts suicide by hanging ,   but steven stops him .   the two brothers also faced harassment at school ,   gus becoming a primary target for ridicule because of his mask .   steven often fought off the bullies on gus’s behalf ,   &  would come home bruised  &  bloodied from the weekly fight .   their childhood was tough ,   but they stuck together .

besides steven ,   gus had one other childhood friend .   his name was rowan ,   &  gus  &  rowan became friends over their similar situations at home .   they became close very quickly ,   &  eventually started becoming affectionate such as holding hands  &  even kissing each other .   they were also ridiculed for this behavior ,   &  further isolated themselves to avoid harassment .   gus eventually outgrew his fear of his bullies  &  started to fight back alongside steven ,   &  often times would get in trouble because of this .

their friendship lasted until gus was around 16 ,   the only reason it ended being that rowan had to move away .   gus recognized rowan as his first love ,   even if he didn’t consider it until much later .

gus  &  steven barely scraped by in high school ,   however ,   it is where steven meets the love of his life ,   renee .

at the age of 18 ,   after gus graduated from high school ,   he decided to run away from maria ,   along with steven .   they joined the military together as front line soldiers .

during his time in the military ,   gus has a fling for one of his commanding officers ,   johnathan .   it was very secretive ,   but genuine in nature .   they planned to continue on their relationship once they both got out of the military ,   but johnathan ,   as well as steven ,   were captured as war prisoners .

they were both tortured  &  scarred beyond belief ,   &  once they were rescued ,   steven had been left permanently disfigured .   johnathan did not survive .

steven was honorably discharged  &  gus left soon after ,   &  the two of them went to college .   steven majored in business while gus majored in mechanical engineering .   however ,   steven reconnected with renee  &  dropped out .   gus graduated with a bachelors .

after graduating from college ,   both gus  &  steven joined the crime business as hitmen .   they were initially successful ,   but as time went on ,   gus’s conscience got the best of him ,   so he stepped down  &  forced steven to do the same .   gus then became a weapons engineer .

renee gave birth to steven’s son ,   adam ,   &  died during child birth .   as a result ,   steven fell in a deep depression  &  became addicted to heroin ,   so gus took it upon himself to raise adam .

after steven returned from jail for drug possession ,   gus insisted that steven get a job if they were to live together ,   so steven decided to return to the hitman business ,   as it was the only job he had ever successfully kept .   although gus disapproved ,   he didn’t stop him .

after 40 years of not contacting gus  &  steven ,   whitney reaches out  &  asks them to attend the funeral for her boyfriend ,   garrett pierce ,   who was sniped in the head .   they agree out of pity ,   even though they don’t particularly like her .

at the funeral ,   gus notices a strangely familiar phrase on whitney’s tattoos  …  “ nevermore ”   the pleasantries of the funeral end fairly quickly once whitney gets intel on who killed her boyfriend  ...  it was steven .   after a couple of days pass ,   adam goes missing .

gus goes to the police ,   but strangely finds that the evidence is being erased ,   suggesting that there is something bigger at play .   as a result ,   gus enlists the help of one of his clients ,   luna robins ,   to help find adam .

steven starts to blame himself for his son’s kidnapping  &  attempts suicide by jumping off a building . his body is never found .

through extensive research ,   gus comes to find out that whitney is the godmother of hellfire ,   a crime syndicate that their father ,   charles ,   was involved with .   charles never killed himself  …  he was murdered .   &  fiona ,   his wife ,   was murdered as well .   “ nevermore ” was their maxim .

now ,   gus is working with luna to save adam ,   before it’s too late .
