“Our Wives Under the Sea”
by Julia Armfield
Finished: February 15th Format: Book Overall Rating: ★★★★☆
Six months later than predicted, Leah returns home from her deep-sea exhibition. Yet some part of her is missing, and something new is emerging. How does love and self survive when identity is stripped, and fighting for the past no longer feels plausible?
In each chapter, the reader jumps between Miri and Leah as the two learn to live together again, even though one of them is not quite there. We follow as Leah slowly changes, becoming more isolated and creature-like, and as Miri struggles to understand what is happening or has happened to the love of her life. An impactful story about life and death, and inevitably letting go, that asks the question: When you change beyond recognition, what, or who, do you leave behind?
