the smallest twitch crossed his jaw when she tugged her shirt higher, trying to hide the scar. a part of him wanted to tell her not to. that it wasn't shameful. that he hated the reminder just as much as she did, yes, but not for the reason she thought. his silence stretched long enough to feel suffocating, and still he didn't look away. 'i don't think of you in anger,' michael said at last, voice low, though words never break. 'not you,' the chain clinked as his fingers tapped once, twice, against the table — the closest thing he could get to restlessness. 'the rest of the world. . . not you,'
leaning forward again, his movements were slow, and deliberate. the overhead lights caught the scars on his own hands, the grooves of a life that had never been soft. his gaze pinned her like he used to pin butterflies to paper, a kind of quiet possession that had never needed words. 'what i want . . .' his voice trailed, and he swallowed hard. he wasn't good at this; he guessed he never had been. still, for her, he pushed through the familiar weight in his chest. 'i want you to stop looking at me like i'm a stranger,' the words hung sharp between them, too vulnerable for something that came from michael. he shifted, chains scraping loud in the sterile room. 'you came back. you could've left me buried, but you didn't. don't tell me that means nothing,'
HIS FEATURES ARE STONY. it's like relearning how to read. it's a language that she still knows but she's so out of practice that she's afraid to speak. what she would give to see a furrow of his brow, to feel the pulse of his heart under her fingertips, to remind her that there had been something between them. the canyon between who they were and who they've become is vast. cindy doesn't know how to traverse it. nor does she know what would await her on the other side.
"what about the world?" she asked. there's so much that she yearned to unearth about his history. to try and understand what had caused that flip in him to switch. "i mean - you don't have to tell me michael." his name the punctuation of every sentence she wanted to say. as if she can preserve a version of his former self in the softness of his name. tuck him safe between the letters until this anger or hurt had come to pass fully.
when he leaned forward she cannot help but counter back. her spine pressed flat onto the back of the chair. there's a flicker of fear in her features but she moved to meet his eyes with hers. it's funny, but she could swear there's almost warmth. "you were never buried." voice is barely a whisper. it's almost a laugh in the back of her throat. "not to me at least. the news, my work, ziggy - all begged me to bury you. mourn you. forget you. but i just stayed." cindy looked down to her own trembling hands. "when i thought you called i came." shoulders shrugged at her own misgivings. "but i cannot pretend that there is a vast part of you that is a stranger to me. places that you never let me, or anybody sit with you, not really, and i don't know how to not be frightened by those parts." she admitted. "i don't know how to reconcile them with the parts of you i know like they were my own."
because the honest truth about cindy berman was that she had never left. there was no coming back when she had thought about this moment as if it were a worry stone she was meant to smooth out with the pad of her thumb. cindy had stayed rooted in place. the only time she had felt alive in the last couple decades had been here, in this room, with him.

chains rattled again when his hands flexed against the metal, not from anger but something harder to name. michael's gaze didn't leave hers, not once, not when her words hit like knives, not when she spat her defiance at him like she'd been saving it for years. he was sure she had been. 'i didn't —' he stopped. the words dragged out of him like something foreign. his jaw worked before he tried again, quieter this time. 'i didn't ask,' the implication, however, hung between them: but i wanted to.
silence stretched between them, heavy as the chains that bound him. his eyes flicked to her scar again; his mark on her, proof that she'd stood between him and the only instinct he had ever trusted. he hated the sight of it. it was a sign of his failure, but more than that, evidence that he could feel guilt, as every time he looked at it, regret filled his lungs. 'you always remind me,' michael said finally, voice flat but not entirely empty. 'every time i close my eyes, i see you. you think you're the only one who lives with what happened?' there was no apology in him — never had been, never would be — but there was something like admission, something scraped raw within his throat. he shifted forward, pulling the chains taut until the links groaned. 'if i wanted you gone,' he murmured, deliberate in his tone. 'i wouldn't be talking to you right now,'
HE DIDN'T ASK. there's a wash of shame on her features. a sense of embarassment that floods her and if she could make herself smaller she would. cindy wasn't sure what she was expecting but there's a sort of disappointment in the admission. "oh." she said quietly, gaze on the table, and then his hands, and then the chains that kept the two shackled to one another. "i guess i assumed -" hoped. "that it was at your request. normally they don't have the -" victim sounded wrong rolling off her tongue. "well, you know, people like me come here."
in a moment he's deflated the anger in her. it was truly a talent of his, even now. despite herself she settled into the cool metal chair, feet on the floor, and her own hands mirrored on the table.when he speaks again she can't seem to find her voice. mind races as she tries to comprehend the meaning of it. "i - i didn't know you thought of me at all." cindy admitted. "except in anger maybe." anger at being caught, or getting in the way. of never being quite where she should be. when she notices that his gaze is on her heart, on the scar, and she takes a moment to tug the shirt upward.
his expression doesn't give anything away, and to anyone but her the tone could almost be threatening. instead her eyes are big and wide, searching for an understanding she had only ever found in his features. "if you don't want me gone michael, what do you want with me?"
“Oh, your poor face.” “You should see them.”

the walls never change. white, sterile, humming with the low buzz of fluorescent lights that made everything feel like it had been drained of color. michael sat in the chair bolted to the floor, chains at his wrists rattling every time he moved, though he hardly did. stillness had become second nature, as did the monotony of this place. but then the door opened, and both of those things cracked open. cindy was older now, sharper at the edges but still carrying something of the girl he used to know. there's a moment where michael didn't breathe, unwilling to break the image of her standing there, like a memory given flesh.
unblinking eyes trailed over her face, though his expression barely changed. should any orderlies be watching, their jaws would drop at the voice that escaped the sociopath; michael did not speak, not even to the doctor. but to cindy . . . 'didn't think you'd come,' voice was low and rough from disuse. the chain pulled tight as he shifted forward, resting his forearms on the metal table between them. eyes flashed down to her chest, where the tip of the scar he had mistakingly given her just peeked out from her shirt. 'not that you should be here,' he muttered after a long silence, as eyes met hers again. if it were anyone else, that would be a threat. his jaw tightened. 'always stepping in between me and something, aren't you?' @mothflamed.
SHE HAD FOLLOWED THE NEWS ABOUT HIM. everyone told her that she shouldn't have. there was only so much you could do cooped up in a hospital room. ziggy wouldn't talk about him. the doctors made sure the news was never on. they urged her that he was someone to forget about. which was hard to do. difficult to do when the evidence of his violence cracked against her chest. sharp and jagged the cut had never been clean, and cindy had never been ashamed enough to hide it. even more difficult because she could remember the tenderness in his fingers, in his words, a tenderness that in that pivitol momenet he had been devoid of. maybe he never had any of that to begin with.
it had taken year to will herself out of her house. to bring herself to be in the same room with him again. she didn't tell anybody where she was going, just accepted the meeting when asked. she's stopped at the door when she sees him. a rush of something in her chest stirs. he looked the same, but also different. it was as if her former image of him now rested in his aged features. as if they weren't quite the same. cindy's hand almost wants to reach for him, feel the flesh of his cheek beneath her fingertips, trying to remind herself that he's not myth or legend but flesh and blood.
instead she sits across from him, voice frozen for a moment. "you asked. or someone here asked, i just obliged." she said quietly. there was no clue as to what the purpose was. when he continues to speak she meets his gaze, no trace of fear or worry within her own but his words are sharp. despite the walls cindy has built up they still cut. "well, michael, i'm so sorry that i came between you and my sister." cindy retorted. "so if you don't want this fucking meeting or conversation or whatever then i can go okay? i'm left with enough reminders of you anyway"
SHE HAD SOFTENED HERE. wiry curls that used to clump and tangle were now supple and soft. there was a rosiness in carrie's cheeks that almost looked wrong on her features. halloweentown was something that carrie could have only dreamed about. everyone here was different and unique, and it was those very things that were uplifted. it was a stark contrast to the chill of chamberlain's students. the way their insults were carved into the soft parts of her mind.
"why did your mom keep this from you? halloweentown i mean." legs are criss crossed, pumpkin in front of her. gentle hands scoop the seeds out and into a bowl. carrie takes large sections out trying to get the interior of the pumpkin hollow. mama never believed in pumpkins or halloween. it was just another night to justify sinning. but carrie had begun to think of it differently.
she reached for the tool to help smooth the inside. she's in no rush to finish. it is her first pumpkin after all. "i'm sure she had her reasons i was just wondering."

KATNISS ROLLED HER EYES. max is a half step behind her but she powers on walking home. "you can try all you want but i'm not dressing up for halloween." it had never been a holiday that the everdeens had been particularly fond of. when prim was young katniss would walk her around the neighborhood, or dress up in a makeshift costume if it was to match. it was always at the behest of her sister though, and certainly not of her own volition.
except for once. she can remember one halloween the year before prim turned seven. the year before her father died. the year before her mother turned into a shell of herself. it had been at prim's insistance that they do beauty and the beast. prim had been belle, their father the beast, their mother cogsworth, and katniss had ended up as gaston. ever the hunter. it was the only time she'd ever seen the point.
"it's stupid." she continued. "i buy a costume for what fifty dollars to wear it once? if you think about it i'm just making a good investment, you know?" maybe there's a part of her, buried deep, that would love to embrace the charm of the holiday but her logic would not let her. "plus i've got a mountain of calc homework."

HE LOOKED LIKE SHIT. even with a shower and a fresh shave it clung to him. perhaps it was because the air was stale and there was no view to the outside world. he could commend them for surviving and building back their district from beneath the ground. it was the clearest his mind had been in decades though, and the pain he could still feel was a harder feeling than the numbness of it all. his limbs are heavy as he headed to the cafeteria.
she's the only spot of color in the room. the flourish of the head scarf catches his eye immediately and the pinched expression of judgement is all to germane to effie's core. there's a heavy sigh had he releases, a modicum of relief that she's alive. that katniss is alive. that despite where peeta may be he's alive too. saving people had never been his strongsuit.
haymitch walks through the tables, waving when appropriate but mostly beelining towards her. he slides into the seat across from her with a crooked grin. "not sure which one of us looks worse for wear." he joked, knowing full well it would always be him. "they confiscate your eyebrows sweetheart?"

even if it falls flat, percy recognizes the quip for what it is. her lips quirk into a small smile, bordering on sardonic. "i sometimes wonder if anybody does. or eyes, for that matter." was it her fault? was she not enough of a victim, did she hide it too well? were the behaviors she adopted to survive the very ones that condemned her?
it isn't fair. though janice would say life isn't fair, persephone, in that horrid condescending way of hers, usually followed by: i'm just telling you how it is. as if it was all for percy's good. as if cruelty was a given, as if she would never have even one ally to stand with her against the world.
she was just a kid. they were both just kids, her and carrie both. whatever they've been through, they didn't deserve it. percy smiles a little, sweet and sincere. "i'd like that," she says. "i mean, i don't know how much use i'll really be, all things considered, but i'll try my best. outcasts gotta stick together, right?"
CARRIE OFTEN WORRIED ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE SAW. if they could see her for the full being that she was or if she was something different to them. maybe she was just the weird. or someone who was so unnoticable that she blended into the cracks on the walls. she couldn't see herself the way that they saw her. it was maddening to not know if you were asking for too much or too little.
she cannot help but crack a smile at the response. shoulders slump with a lazy shrug. "if they have ears they aren't listening. and if they have eyes they certainly aren't looking." she remarked in return. how easily the unkind hands of the people who ought to be caring for them could bruise.
"i think the effort is more than enough for me!" it wasn't as if anyone else had tried. not her father. perhaps her mother had thought she was, but it was clear that margaret had never truly known love or kindness. not since carrie took her first breath. "i-i don't always have control of it but i can be pretty powerful if danger is near."

DANI'S SHIFT HAD BEEN TWELVE HOURS. eyes flit down to the watch on her left hand. it was closer to thirteen now. she could feel the weariness down to her bones. she didn't know what it was but the patients today had been extra tedious. smith called out and gale got fired in the middle of the shift. it often seemed like dani was the only one capable of getting things done right the first time. she's changed into plainscloths, slips of blonde framing her face just outside of her bun.
she's heading down toward the bus stop when she hears a low murmer behind her. dani peeked her head into the alley and saw a woman pushing something into the back of her car. it was right behind the strip mall. the resturants and laundry mats that were all too clearly a front. dani takes a step closer,"hey!" she said, just loud enough so the woman could hear her. "unless you're friendly with the falcone's i'd get the fuck out of this alley." she didn't want to be in the woman's business but she also didn't want it to turn into a major police presence in the area. "they aren't the friendly types and i'm guessing it's not laundry you're stuffing into your trunk."
