๐ค final confrontation with chris redfield
The altar had become a graveyard. Broken stone, black roots, and the remains of the ceremony lay scattered beneath a sky that seemed to mourn with ash instead of rain. The Megamycete writhed beneath the earth, responding to its creatorโs rage. Mother Miranda stood at its heart. Her once-pristine robes were torn and soaked with blood. Great black wings spread behind her, feathers shuddering with every ragged breath. She heard him. Those heavy, familiar footsteps.
The soldier.
The man who had dismantled a century of her work. Slowly, she turned.
โYouโฆโ
The word escaped through clenched teeth. Pale eyes burned with unrestrained hatred.
โYou butchered my children. You tore apart everything I created!โ
The ground cracked beneath her feet as black tendrils burst violently from the earth, twisting around shattered pillars.
โFor a century I endured. I sacrificed. I perfected what lesser minds could never comprehend. And you...โ
She pointed at Chris, trembling not with fear, but fury.
โA stubborn, self-righteous soldier with a gun. You presume to judge me?โ
Her wings flared wide, sending a storm of black feathers across the battlefield.
โYou know nothing of loss! Nothing of devotion! Nothing of what it costs to drag hope from the jaws of death!โ
Her face twisted, grief and wrath becoming indistinguishable.
โEvery life I tookโฆ every sacrifice I demandedโฆ was for Eva! And you stole her from me!โ
The Megamycete answered her scream. The entire cathedral shook. Roots exploded from beneath the stone floor as though the earth itself shared her rage.
โI will grind your bones into this soil, Christopher Redfield. I will erase your name from every memory this world possesses. And when your heart finally stopsโฆโ
She stepped forward, her voice dropping into a cold, venomous whisper.
โโฆI will make certain the only thing you rememberโฆโ
โโฆis that you failed.โ
Ethan doesn't know what he expected after death, but being in that village still, seeing Miranda alive and well- maybe not alive, but still- isn't it. He almost regrets my being in the Baker's living room again. "For fuck's sake. We're not gonna be stuck here together forever, aren't we?" - @diedindulvey
The silence of the Megamycete was unlike any other. It had no wind, no heartbeat, no passage of time ; only memory stretched into eternity. Miranda regarded Ethan as though he were another echo among countless others. There was no hatred in her expression now, nor triumph. Death had stripped both of them of the luxury of unfinished battles.
โAnd yetโฆโ she said quietly, โโฆhere you are.โ
Her gaze drifted beyond him, into the endless lattice of memories woven through the fungal network.
โYou destroyed my vessel. You denied me Eva.โ
โAnd stillโฆ neither of us truly disappeared.โ
For the first time in a century, her voice carried something almost resembling fatigue.
โThe Megamycete remembers everything. So unless you intend to destroy memory itself, I suspect we shall have to tolerate one another.โ
A faint, humorless smile crossed her lips.
โThough if it offers you any comfort, Ethan Wintersโฆ eternity was not my first choice either.โ
@motherxmiranda
The laboratory was unnaturally quiet, broken only by the measured rhythm of Mother Mirandaโs footsteps. She found Dr. Victor Gideon exactly where she expected him to be ; surrounded by machinery and the illusion that answers could always be found inside a microscope. โYou are diligent,โ Miranda observed, her voice calm as she approached. โA rare qualityโ Her gaze drifted across the scattered reports before returning to him. โYou spend your days studying Graceโฆ yet I wonder.โ A faint smile touched her lips. โHave you ever stopped to ask who is truly being observed?โ
Victor didn't consider himself to be superstitious in the slightest, having mostly scrubbed his vocabulary clean of religious references, aside from occasionally taking the Lord's name in vain. He had little patience for the beliefs and delusions of others, but he knew that if he wanted to find out what had become of his long-time pen pal, Karl Heisenberg, he would have to contend with his "mother."
He gave her a smile, his voice and expression oozing with superficial charm. "Where I come from, somebody is always watching. Not even the watchers are exempt from living in a surveillance state."
It was a little evasive, sure, but he wasn't sure how else to approach her at first, this strange and sometimes unpredictable asset to the Connections.
Miranda regarded him in silence, weighing the practiced charm behind his smile far more carefully than the words themselves.
โSo even the observers require watching. How exhausting.โ
Her golden gaze lingered on him, sharp enough to dissect every carefully chosen expression.
โYou hide behind wit because it is safer than honesty.โ A faint smile returned to her lips. โA sensible habitโฆ though not a particularly useful one here.โ
She folded her hands before her.
โYou did not come all this way to speak of surveillance, Doctorโฆ You came looking for Karl.โ
There was no question in her voice.
โTell meโฆโ
Her smile deepened ever so slightly.
โWhat is it you hope to find your friendโฆ or his secrets? Or even worseโฆโ
โYouโre a bit terrifying.โ From Siobhan, unprompted
Mirandaโs gaze settled on her, calm and unblinking. A faint smile touched her lips.
โTerrifying?โ she echoed softly. She tilted her head, studying Siobhan with quiet interest. โOnly to those who still believe they have something left to lose.โ

The sound of approaching footsteps drew no concern from Mother Miranda. If anything, they confirmed what she had expected.
โSoโฆโ
she murmured, watching Leon emerge through the falling snow.
โEven after everything youโve survivedโฆ they still send you to chase monsters. How cruelโฆโ
Her expression remained calm, almost sympathetic. Almost.
Leon slowed to a stop a few paces away, boots crunching softly in the snow. His breath hung white in the cold as he looked up at her, jaw set but eyes unreadable.
"...Cruel?" A quiet laugh escaped him, tired more than amused.
"They stopped asking what I wanted a long time ago."
His gloved hand settled near the grip of his pistol, not drawing it; just resting there out of habit.
"But don't waste your sympathy on me, Miranda." His gaze sharpened. "I've seen what your version of mercy looks like."
A beat of silence.
"If they send me after monsters..." He tilted his head ever so slightly. "...it's usually because the monsters keep giving them reasons."
He squared his shoulders against the wind.
"So." A faint, dry smile tugged at one corner of his mouth. "You gonna keep psychoanalysing me, or are we getting to the part where you try to kill me?"
Mirandaโs smile never faltered.
โYou mistake observation for sympathy, Mr. Kennedy.โ
She took a slow step forward, utterly unconcerned by the hand resting on his weapon.
โI have no interest in killing you. Death is such a finite thing. Transformation is far moreโฆ enlightening.โ
Her sharp eyes searched his face as though reading years of buried exhaustion.
โYou call me a monster, yet youโve spent your life obeying those who create them. Tell meโฆ if they ordered you to die tomorrow, would you hesitateโฆ or simply salute?โ
The corners of her lips curved ever so slightly.
โIโm merely curious whether the man standing before me still belongs to himself.โ
For the briefest moment, something flickered behind Leon's eyes.
Not fear.
Recognition.
His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly before the familiar mask settled back into place, expression flattening into practiced indifference.
"...You think you've figured me out."
A dry breath escaped him, almost a laugh.
"You've got one thing wrong."
His hand stayed resting on his holster, but it wasn't tense. It was simply where it always ended up.
"I don't salute."
He met her gaze without blinking.
"I argue. I ignore orders. I piss off every superior I've ever had."
The corner of his mouth twitched.
"And when they tell me to do something stupid, I usually find a way to do the job without following the script."
There was another pause.
"...If tomorrow was my last day?"
His expression never changed.
"I'd go."
The words came too quickly.
No hesitation.
No bravado.
Just fact.
"But not because someone told me to."
His eyes hardened.
"I'd go because if I don't... someone else will."
Snow drifted lazily between them.
"As for whether I belong to myself..." Leon gave the faintest shrug.
"I wake up every morning. I choose to keep going."
A lie by omission.
"That's enough for me.
His gaze sharpened again.
"So unless you're planning on giving me my life back..." His voice dropped, calm and steady. "...I don't see much point in discussing who owns it."
Miranda regarded him with quiet amusement, as though listening to a child defend a cage heโd mistaken for freedom.
โChoice,โ she echoed softly. โSuch a comforting word.โ
She stepped closer, close enough that her voice scarcely rose above the whisper of the wind.
โYou say no one owns your lifeโฆ yet every morning you wake only to carry burdens left behind by other people. Raccoon City. The Presidentโs daughter. Every new nightmare they place at your feet.โ
Her eyes never left his.
โYou call it choosing because the alternative is unbearable.โ
Leon exhaled sharply through his nose.
"...You know what's funny?"
For the first time since he'd arrived, there was actual irritation in his voice.
"You keep talking like you've uncovered some great truth."
His eyes narrowed.
"Like you're the first person who's ever looked at me and thought, he's tired."
A humourless laugh escaped him.
"Congratulations."
He took another step, boots crunching against the snow.
"I know exactly what I am."
His jaw was tight enough to ache.
"I know I'm exhausted."
"I know I carry ghosts."
"I know I keep saying yes when I should probably walk away."
Each sentence came a little quicker than the last.
"But don't mistake self-awareness for surrender."
His gaze locked onto hers.
"You think because you can name the cracks, the house belongs to you."
Another step.
"It doesn't."
For a fleeting second, something raw flashed across his face.
"You don't get to stand there and tell me my choices aren't mine just because you would've made different ones."
His voice dropped, steady but edged.
"I've had enough people deciding who I am."
A long silence.
"...You're not getting in line."
Something in Miranda broke. The air trembled as black feathers erupted around her, carried by a force that had nothing to do with the wind. Her calm composure fractured, revealing the fury she had kept buried beneath a century of patience.
โYou presume to pity me?โ
Her voice echoed through the snow-covered ruins, no longer soft, no longer measured.
โYou speak of your dead as though their memory grants you wisdom.โ Eyes blazed with something ancient and terrifying. โYou lost them because you had no power to save them.โ
She took another step, every movement deliberate.
โI found power. And unlike youโฆ I refused to kneel before death.โ
Her gaze locked onto his with open contempt.
โYou call me inhuman because it comforts you. Because if I am a monster, you never have to ask yourself the question that truly frightens you.โ
A bitter smile crossed her lips.
โIf you possessed my powerโฆwould you truly have let them die?โ

The sound of measured footsteps echoed through the stone corridor. Mother Miranda waited at the end of it, hands folded behind her back, watching Bertha approach with the same quiet scrutiny she reserved for all of her creations.
โThere is a settlement several miles from here, theyโve begun asking questions they shouldnโt.โ
Her gaze limgered on Bertha for a moment.
โI trust youโll remind them why curiosity is so often fatal.โ
A faint smile touched Mirandaโs lips.
โBut take your time.โ
She knew exactly what those words meant to the woman standing before her.
โAnd when youโre finishedโฆ tell me what you learned. Screams can be remarkably informative.โ
Bertha stops when she reaches Mother Miranda; the medic doesn't much believe in gods, but there was no denying Miranda's power. Ruthless, shrewd, and very intelligent. Umbrella would have loved to have one like her among their ranks. Though, they likely would have been unable to keep up with her ambition. It no longer matters; Umbrella is as dead as that rotten city.
She listens, humming a soft acknowledgement behind her mask. How annoying to have idiots and peasants poking into things that are better left alone. It would not do for Miranda's work to be interrupted by such things. She nods, "Understood." Just as calmly as Bertha arrived, she turns and leaves.
In a little settlement miles away the medic gets to work. It takes a couple days before she is satisfied. No witnesses are left to what she's done, and a fire helps to further destroy the bodies she's worked on. Not that they would have been recognizable anyways. She considers keeping some of the teeth as trophies, but ultimately tosses them around different parts of the building she had set up in before burning it down. Mixed up, scattered about; it will be very difficult to use dentistry to identify the remains. A fun little puzzle for anyone who cares enough to try.
Bertha returns with a briefcase borrowed from her journey; it has some documents in it detailing business dealings between the settlement and an organization whose name means nothing to Bertha. But this group was asking about Miranda's village, about the lycan that are rumored to lurk in the woods, about too many things they should not be. And, of course, this settlement needs the money from outsiders, so why not answer a few questions? Or keep an eye out for anything of interest? Well. Now they know better.
And, if not, there is at least one body strung up as a scarecrow in a field to remind them. The only one to be spared the fire.
The medic returns, case in hand. She approaches, but does not address Miranda, waiting to be acknowledged.
Miranda did not immediately turn. She had smelled the smoke on Bertha long before the woman returned. Only after a measured silence did she glance over her shoulder, her eyes settling on the briefcase before they found Bertha herself.
โYou were thorough.โ
It was neither praise nor surprise merely fact. She accepted the case, opening it just enough to skim the documents inside. A single unfamiliar name caught her attention. Curious.
โThey asked the wrong questions,โ
she murmured, closing the case with a quiet click. Her gaze returned to Bertha.
โAnd you gave them the only answer they deserved. Continue to listen for whispers like these. Information is far more valuable than corpses.โ
A brief pause followed.
โโฆThough I imagine you enjoyed leaving both.โ

Mother Miranda found the young woman standing alone, her unease impossible to miss despite the composure she tried so desperately to maintain. Miranda observed, her voice gentle enough to resemble kindness.
โYou carry yourself well, most would have surrendered to fear by now.โ
She stopped a few steps away, golden eyes studying Ashley with quiet curiosity.
โYouโve spent your life protected by others.โ A faint smile crossed her lips. โTell meโฆ who are you when there is no one left to rescue you?โ
The question lingered in the cold air, as though Miranda already intended to discover the answer herself.

For the first time, Mirandaโs smile vanished. The air itself seemed to grow heavier.
โYou mistake restraint for weakness,โ
she said, her voice still quiet though the warmth had long since disappeared. Her golden eyes narrowed, not in rage, but in disappointment.
โSo determined to convince yourself you are freeโฆ and yet every word that leaves your mouth is shaped by those who broke you.โ
Black feathers drifted lazily around her, dissolving before they touched the snow.
โYou cling to your suffering as though it grants you virtue.โ She took one measured step forward. โDo not presume we are alike, Leon Kennedy.โ
Something ancient stirred beneath her calm exterior. The next words were cold.
โI buried my child. I reshaped the world to reclaim her. You accepted your losses and called it strength. I rejected mineโฆ and became something greater.โ
A faint curl of contempt touched her lips.
โAnd you dare compare our choices. What a shame.โ

The village had a way of revealing those who didnโt belong. Mother Miranda had sensed the outsider long before she caught sight of her. An unfamiliar rhythm against the snow. someone disciplined enough to avoid the monsters, yet bold enough to venture deeper instead of turning back. She watched from the shadows as the woman navigated the abandoned paths with practiced ease. There was no panic, no wasted motion. Only purpose.
Miranda stepped from the darkness as though she had always been there, her expression composed, almost welcoming. Pale wings dissolved into black feathers that drifted lazily onto the frozen ground before vanishing.
โYouโve come a long way,โ
Eyes lingered on the stranger, studying every subtle reaction.

The question hung in the cold air.
She left a deliberate silence hanging in the air, Ada didnโt often shake that easily. Not when she had seen things that never in her life should she have. Though words didnโt come, Amber gems examined the woman before her, studying her with the same careful observation she gave anyone or anything.
Snow crisped beneath heeled boots as she paced seeking as many angles as possible so not to have any surprises. She paid no mind to the feathers, seemed now she was dealing with deities. She had seen files, and personally spoken to Redfield. Her employer sent her here to gain evidence of Mother Mirandaโs existence.
โI was curious as to why my employer was so desperate for information on you.โ Ada spoke almost seeming unimpressed, her composure in her years still flawless as ever. โNow I know why.โ Ada mused for a moment stepping closer to the woman before her.
She assured to not exert any hostility, no form of aggression that could turn this situation into something Ada couldnโt handle. โSo what are you?โ She finally asked knowing the chances of leaving with any information may be nearly impossible.
Miranda watched the woman circle her without moving an inch, allowing the scrutiny with the same quiet patience one might grant a curious child. Whoever had sent her had chosen well. A faint smile curved Mirandaโs lips.
โWhat am I ?โ she echoed softly. โThe wrong question.โ
Her golden gaze settled on Ada with unsettling calm.
โI was a mother long before I became a myth. The world simply chose to fear what it could not understand. And yetโฆ here you stand, chasing ghosts for an employer who knows far less than they pretend.โ
She tilted her head ever so slightly.
โSo tell me, Miss Wongโฆ will you return them with answersโฆ โ Her voice lowered. โโฆor stay long enough to ask the right questions?โ
