Did you know that Taronga Zoo wharf holds a dramatic place in our local history? World headlines were made in 1980, when Gregory McHardie and Larry Danielson bombed two regional Woolworths stores, in Maitland and Warilla - before sending a ransom note to Woolies Head Office, warning of further daylight explosions if a ransom of $1 million in money, diamonds and gold was not paid. Just after 3pm on Christmas Eve 1980, the George St store in the city became the next target. Staff and shoppers were given just minutes to evacuate, and at 3:25pm, a third bomb went off. No one was killed. Woolworths put together the ransom as best they could and stuffed it into a cricket bag, while NSW Police put together an intricate operation. January 12, 1981 was the day chosen as the ransom drop off, with the bombers directing a courier to various locations including the Rose Bay Hotel and the Buena Vista Hotel in Mosman. Then, under the cover of darkness, the bombers ordered that the ransom be thrown into the harbour at Taronga Zoo Wharf. The courier did as he was told, and dropped the cricket bag, as the police watched and waited, until bubbles finally emerged from the water. Specialist divers hit the harbour and found McHardie in a diving suit. The rest as they say, is history!
