The guest director from Germany for the theather’s new production of Waiting for Godot left last week, in the light of current events. Left, not as in the performance, the theater, or Washington, D.C., but as in the entire country as it is. ‘This was the last straw of you God-damned Americans!’, he said, voice coated in a heavy accent, before putting out his cigarette on the side of the building and fractiously getting in a cab. Nobody’s seen the man ever since.

As a last resort choice, it is you who reluctantly took over his role about 2 hours ago, given that you’re the only remaining person in this building that’s both qualified enough and isn’t too busy already acting in the play. But as minutes rapidly race down the line, you get more and more doubtful.

Y/N’s POV

After I ran into Corpse in the coffee shop, he’d been making an effort to see me in person quite often. And I wanted to make sure he was okay, so I was happy to venture over to his apartment with dinner basically every day. Today I decided to make it myself that way he could have some leftovers when I wasn’t there. I knocked on the door, adjusting my grip on the pan of lasagna balanced on my hip. Corpse opened the door quickly, his eyes crinkled at the sides signaling that he was smiling. He still kept a mask on until I was in the apartment, in case there was anybody in the hallway.

“Hey,” he said, quickly moving to grab the pan from me so I could come in. I followed him into the kitchen and accepted the hug he offered me, rubbing my hands up and down his back before leaning back to smile up at him. “I missed you.”

“It’s only been like, maybe 15 hours.” He rolled his eyes, chuckling and releasing me. “But I missed you too.” He wrapped me into a hug again, nuzzling into my neck before he took his mask off finally. He was so good looking, I felt honored that he was so willing to show me his face so fast. I grabbed a couple plates from the cabinet and served each of us at the table. “How was your day?”

“It was okay, I did some editing, took a nap. I’m supposed to stream with everyone in like an hour.” I nodded, basically inhaling my lasagna. “Were you hungry?” He laughed.

You’re happy for Corpse, of course you are. What good friend wouldn’t be happy for their friend when they suddenly start to shoot for the stars? You definitely would. Right? It’s not like it hurts to watch him take in all these girls that throw themselves at him, he has never been happier for the many years you’ve known him. His YouTube channel is finally paying the bills for him, and you’re happy he doesn’t have to fear getting an eviction note, for dancing on the line a little too long. You’re happy that he has all these new friends. You’re happy he’s enjoying himself. You’re happy, because he’s happy.  So why does it hurt so much?

You’ve had feelings for your best friend for quite some time. You tried to push them away, which in return just seemed to cultivate them and make them stronger. You tried your damn best just to be his quirky happy best friend that was along with him for the ride. You never minded being the one to pick up the pieces when he fell apart. He would do the same for you… He would do the same for you, right?
