seeing lexi and damon again consumed stefan’s thoughts.  he  felt  alone  in  the  despair  of  missing  them,  of  missing  himself.  nothing  was  right  anymore  which  was  why  all  he  could  do  was  refocus  back  on  the  most  important  thing:  elena.  her  safety.  her  blood.  if  he  was  able  to  forget  about  everything  he’d  lost,  he  wouldn’t  be  able  to  miss  anything.  a  smirk  appears  at  her  question,    “    or  something.    ”    with  a  wave  of  his  fingers,  a  waiter  appears  at  their  table.    “    go  in  the  back  and  pour  me  a  glass  of  you.    ”    forest  green  hues  flicker  with  a  devious  tint.  he  knows  elena  won’t  approve,  that  she’ll  be  abhorred  and  disappointed.  which  was  exactly  why  he’d  done  it  to  begin  with.  he  has  to  keep  chipping  away  at  her  desire  to  save  him,  and  little  by  little  he’s  learning  what  buttons  to  press  and  when.  slowly  stefan  leans  in,  hands  folding  together  as  he  takes  in  her  uneasy  nature.  it  raises  a  curious  alarm.    “    so,  any  fun  ghosts  visit  you  the  other  night?  thanks  for  sending  lexi  to  me,  by  the  way.  i  had  such  a  blast  with  her.    ”    he  was  still  having  nightmares  from  the  torture;  the  visions  lexi  chose  to  pull  out  his  most  inner  ripper,  cruel.  in  the  end  they  only  worked  so  much.    “    i’m  sure  you  were  hoping  for  better  results  there.  sorry  to  disappoint.    ”

even if it was temporary,  stefan  is  pleased  to  hear  the  exhaustion  in  elena’s  voice.  maybe  now  she  would  start  to  let  go.  if  he  kept  it  up,  she  would  have  to  tire  of  the  pain.  she  couldn’t  love  a  ghost  for  the  rest  of  her  life.    “    well  i  can’t  let  you  go  alone.  physically,  you  know.  it’s  impossible.    ”    he  would  have  no  choice  in  guarding  her  home  once  she  was  there  either,  but  stefan  keeps  his  mouth  shut  about  that  part.  he  walks  her  all  the  way  to  the  front  door,  senses  keen  on  their  surroundings.    “    i’m  not  a  babysitter.  i’m  protecting  you.    ”    he  turns  to  leave,  unable  to  deal  with  even  the  potential  of  seeing  hurt  in  her  eyes  any  longer.    “    you  should  at  least  take  comfort  in  the  fact  that  one  thing  is  still  the  same.    ”

the    entire     walk     back     she    was    quiet.    arguing    with     him    like    this    wouldn’t     get    her    anywhere   ,    and    she    knew    that.    she    knows    this    isn’t    him   ,     but    she    also    knows    he’s    in    there    somewhere.     and     she    wouldn’t    give    up    until    he’d     come     back     to     her.     giving    up     wasn’t    an    option.     she    unlocks     her     door     as     he    turns     away    ,     not     bothering     to     turn    around     as    he    spoke.     “    thanks    for    the    advice   ,    ”     she    snaps     ––––––     quick    to     shut    the     door     behind     her.

the     last    few     hours     had    been    a     whirlwind.     due    to    a    series     of     unfortunate     circumstances    the    veil     to    the     other    side    was     dropped.     temporarily.    which     led    to     this    evenings    unexpected    visitor.     the    other    brother.     damon   back    from    dead.    damon    in     her     bedroom.     damon    saying    all    the    things    he     never     got     to    say    before     he    died.     and    she    let     him.    she     couldn’t     love    him   back   ,     she    loved     another.    but    she    didn’t     stop    him     as    he    spoke    ,     she    didn’t     stop    him    when    he     moved     closer    ,    and     she     didn’t    stop    him    when    he     kissed    her.     call    it    a    moment     of     weakness.     a    moment    of    frustration    with     stefan    ,    with     EVERYTHING.
