“There is a moment in the film where [Penélope Cruz] improvised a kiss with me. I was like, ‘Oh, hair in the gate. Do it again!’ I was so shocked when she did it that I actually turned my head and looked directly into the lens and through to my camera operator. He was like, ‘Olivia!’ and I said, ‘Namaste.’ For some reason that was the only thing that came to my mind, ‘namaste.’ And everyone was like, ‘What?’ And I was like, ‘I don't know. My mind went blank.’ My mind went blank because I was so struck by this moment. I lost control. I was so madly in love with her.”

Helen realises he’s going for a kiss a mere instant before his lips brush hers. There is nothing forceful about it, though. Like everything Dale, it is soft, almost cautious, wordlessly telling her that if she doesn’t want this, he will let her go at once. She doesn’t want him to let her go.
