here is a super helpful website for this kinda thing!
the first result isnāt always the one youāre looking for but when you press enter itāll give you a ton of words related to your query thatāll probably have what youāre wanting, or something better
hereās some examples:

THANK YOU REBLOG TO SAVE A LIFE
hey did you know that uhh
i. the monster's body is a cultural body
ii. the monster always escapes
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire
vii. the monster stands at the threshold⦠of becoming
oh shit i didn't expect this to actually get notes lmao
these are all direct quotes from jeffrey jerome cohen's "monster culture (seven theses)" (full pdf linked) i highly encourage you to read it yourself!
that said, while i think cohen's writing is evocative, it can be a little dense, so while i'm here, here's my capsule summary (you can also hear me talk about this in the first episode of my podcast) (listen to @ghostswerepeopletoo)
i. the monster's body is a cultural body - The monster is a work of fiction to be analyzed through tools of literary and sociological theory.
ii. the monster always escapes - As long as the cultural fear from which the monster stems persists, the monster will reappear in retellings, reimaginings, and sequels.
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis - Monsters defy binaries and challenge easy comprehension or categorization.
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference - The monster represents the Other.
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible - Tales of the monster exist to discourage unacceptable or taboo behaviors.
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire - Subjects can vicariously participate in the disruption of the social order through the monster.
vii. the monster stands at the threshold⦠of becoming - Within the monster we find information about the self.
Actually, my therapist has told me this is a healthy way of processing things. Because you can get the trauma out of your head And you can write the ending you wish it had. The trusted person rescue, the catharsis of getting to kill the one who hurt you.
It's good for your brain. It's healthier than bottling it up. Fiction is where we go for emotional release. That can be true with trauma too.
so what you're saying is
character: NO
therapist: YES
Iā¦am so sorry. But also not.
This is my āØhealing journey⨠:) and my characters are gonna āØsuffer like I did⨠(but donāt worry, itās gonna be okay) :) :) :)
Best trick I ever picked up. Seriously.
I have also learned this is great for [PICK A COOL NAME FOR A SHIP] and [LOOK UP THE FACTS ABOUT OXYGEN LEVELS] and [WHATāS THE WORD] and [DOUBLECHECK CHARACTERāS EYE COLOR] and ALL KINDS OF THINGS.
Anything that isnāt critical in the moment, and could be filled in later while Iām currently trying to burn through writing pages that will be lost if I donāt get them out right now? Brackets.
This is seriously the best advice, and it really helps put it into perspective that the first draft is just that- a draft. Thereās no reason to agonize over a particularly tricky bit of writing when you could just leave it in brackets and skip to the good parts, the parts youāve visualized. I also use brackets for [fact-check this], [use a stronger verb], [is this in character?] and other notes as I write, just so I donāt forget what I want to work on when I go back and edit.Ā
Note the good sense of [brackets] not (parentheses).
Parentheses AKA round brackets can appear in fiction, usually as an afterthought in a character's thoughts or narration (as I saw them used just recently), but square brackets hardly ever do.
oh no

You ever start writing something and it turns out so much darker then expected and your just like āyou okay in there?ā to yourself or is it just me?
my mom got me this little thing and im obsessed with him.... little creature..
I have been thinking. about the creature
THIS IS THE VIBE. MY BOOK. RIGHT HERE.
Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:
The protagonist isnāt always right
The protagonist isnāt always good
The protagonist isnāt always written to be relatable or likeable
The narrator isnāt always right
The narrator isnāt always good
The narrator isnāt always telling the truth
The narrator isnāt always the author
The protagonistās moral compass, the narratorās moral compass and the authorās moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap
Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say
Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say
A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they arenāt, you should read better books

matching shirts for you and your bff
Things to compare your eldritch horror love to:
Static in your ears and at the back of your eyes
Ice-cream pain, a pain digging inside you and spreading out
A mouth that tastes like blood
Seeing something move out of the corner of your eye but it's gone by the time you check
Deja vu, the feeling that this is a memory on repeat
A bruise you don't remember how you got
A live wire
The smell of ozone
The dreamy isolation of being at a gas station at night, where the rest of the world seems to fall away, as if swallowed by the darkness
That lurch in your whole body when you lose your footing
Machines that behave like vital organs; pump fluid like a heart; pull in air like a diaphragm and a set of lungs.
The smell of sulphur
Walking into a room that is far too hot and wondering where the heat is coming from
The way the sky lingers on your skin after it has rained
Dust motes floating in the sun spots
The feeling of being in a large underground pool, all alone
