Cute little blurb about Mateo celebrating his birthday
chapter of inspiration
⋆ ℧ 𓃗 ℧ ⋆⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ⋆ ℧ 𓃗 ℧ ⋆
CASH - Bar, Houston, TX. June 20th
Mateo's birthday was already over a week ago but what is life without the great joys of trying to organize something with friends who all have jobs and lives and things to do.
Mitch helped a lot, thankfully she was usually down for anything. During summer, plans could crash with her rodeo trips but he was usually joining her on those anyway. Sunstone horses and all.
Hard to catch was Russel Beckner, a shithead whose family owned a farm upstate. Mateo met him backstage at a Rodeo a few years ago because that guy loved two things. Drinking and bullriding.
Russ Beckner was an idiot, but over the years he had become one of Mateo's closest friends
“We should go to like a .. strip club later” Russel downed the rest of what was in his glass, looking around for approval
Mateo laughed, drowsy “We aint going to a stripclub”
“C’mon it's your birthday,” the bullrider said, sucking the meat out of the orange slice that he had removed from his drink for later. Adding the peel to the pile that was starting to look like a fucked up fruit salad.
“It was nine days ago” Mitch corrected, taking a small sip of her third whiskey sour. The orange slice that once decorated her cocktail already having been consumed by their sweet friend Russ.
“Congrats again” Milton grinned and slapped Mateos back
Milton Hadek was the only one of his friends that didn't have anything to do with Ranching or the Rodeo. Which was surprising because he looked the part. Broad and heavy.
Mateo knew him since middle school where they played baseball together, a friendship that somehow stayed strong for eleven years.
Sometimes Mateo called him up when he needed extra hands at the Ranch, hoping that one day he was gonna quit his big city boy office job and work at the Rodeo.
But he always waved it off.
With him and Connor living in the big H, the CASH bar – a nasty dive bar in downtown – was the perfect place to celebrate. Anything.
Mateo looked around the table, something having suddenly dawned on him
“Wheres Connor?”
Connor Garza was another friend from the Rodeo, Russels roadtrip partner. A sweet bloke who had nothing but love and joy in his heart. He was their friend group's glue, their one and only. The guy you could trust with everything.
“Hes chatting it up with the nice lady behind the bar”
Everyone followed Mitch's look and turned towards the bar.
He was hard to spot behind the mass of people being loud and drunk but there stood that tall drink of water with his country singer outfit. Leaned over into the bar, vigorously nodding his head.
“Oh I'm sure he's just organizing another round of birthday shots for you” Russ grinned and got up to get another one of his gin & tonics.
That bullrider was always the first to be wasted and the last to leave. Worst and best guy to go out with. On top of that he was really fucking good with the ladies, which was impressive considering the amount of times he had fallen on his head.
But it seemed all one needed to get passed around were some baby blues and a smug grin. The freckles, tall rough frame and cowboy hat definitely helped too.
“I'm still on my first beer man, calm down” Milton sighed when Russ sat down, a big cold glass in his hand.
“Well hurry up and get drunk”
…
It was in fact not only one round of shots, no not even two, but three rounds of birthday whiskey shots that Connor had brought back.
“Alright birthday boy, what's the game plan? Do we already have someone in sight or can we go to Rosies?”
“Whatchu talkin’ bout” Mateo laughed into his fresh cold beer, Russel looked at him in shock
“Your birthday fuck? Obviously?”
He was plastered. First to get drunk and last one to leave, just like always. Good old Russel
Mateo laughed again, “I already had it, watchu on about”
“Yeah with his girlfrienddd” Mitch slurred and wiggled her pointer in his face.
“GIRLFRIEND?” came back from the three guys and Mateo aggressively shook his head, his face felt hot. Maybe he was already a little drunk.
“S’ not my girlfriend. Shusht up– ” Maybe he was a bit more drunk.
“Does she know that?” Milton asked, looking up from the Uber app – preparing to get them to the next bar.
“‘F course she does, shes ... shes” he started, drifting off when those pictures of Laurie at the Oriole lake today appeared in his mind
“Oh no he's gone”
She was crazy to send him those and expect him to stay normal. The kind of picture to hang next to your bed so you could look at her every morning.
“Thinkin’ bout his giiirlfriend” Connor cooed which made Mateo snap back into reality, his grin dropping
“I wansnt” he jumbled, shoving Russ shoulder when he made kissing noises. Bunch of children.
“What she look like, loverboy?”
Mitch giggled “Show them her account”
“What account?”
He didn't have many pictures of her yet, she never sent a lot of them which he didn't mind. He liked seeing her in real life much more anyway.
“Her instagram, Romeo” Mitch explained, like he was the dumbest man alive. Sometimes he really felt like she was right.
“I don't–.. have instagram..”
Russ howled out while Milton and Connor groaned in unison, “Why the fuck do you not have–” “Of course he fucking doesnt have–”
“Oh my god I forgot yous one ah those” Mitch pulled out her own phone and three clicks later, l.woods75 stared back at them, Russel immediately grabbing it to start scrolling
“She followed me like a week ago dude ah told you, remember?”
Mateo blinked at his lovely best friend. He didn't remember. “Uh”
“Holy shit she's bad! Softball player huh? I had something with a tennis player once. Young lady gave the bes–” “Gimme the phone Russ I wanna see too” Connor leaned over the table, making the empty glasses shake dangerously
“Seattle?!” he yelped, his eyebrows shooting up
“Yeah she–” Mateo was violently curious now, raking his head to look at the screen. Until he remembered that it was Laurie they were gawking at.
“Actually gimme that” He chucked the phone out of Russels grip – making the two boys roll their eyes – and finally got to take a good look at her instagram account.
She didn't have many pictures, the last one was from May where she had a bunch of slides from her games and other Seattle things. Seattle…
“So.. she's not your girlfriend?” Milton looked past his shoulder onto the picture that he was zoomed in on. Laurie posing in her catcher gear. She looked so cute, Mateo's eyes almost fell out of his head.
He should call her and ask her how her day has been. Or at least send her a message.
“Hm?” he turned the phone off and gave it back to a dumb grinning Mitch
“Milton asked if she was your girl” Russel found another fruit to chew on. This time it was a pineapple slice
Mateo felt his stomach jump at that label but he knew better to ignore it.
“Nah we just–.. It's nothing serious” The beer tasted a little more bitter than before but he still swallowed down a big sip.
“So you wouldn't mind if I slipped into her messages asking her to come to my next show“ Shithead bull rider Russ Beckner winked. With how wasted he was, Mateo was slightly impressed that he could still wink.
He narrowed his eyes at Russ, scanning how serious he was. Unfortunately sometimes Mateo didn't know the difference between a joke and the truth even when he was stone cold sober.
“I would genuinely skin you”
Mitch snorted loudly while Russ threw his hands up, his eyes heavy with alcohol
“Im just messin with ya, Flower, please dont hurt me”
Flower was a nickname Mateo just couldn't seem to escape. Sometimes Russ went real creative and called him a Blue Bell. Other times he was an Argarita. Depending on the day and how much he liked Mateo.
“Whatever” he sighed and leaned back a little embarrassed about his reaction.
“‘Nothing serious’ my ass ” Russel mumbled under his breath, innocently grinning
“Wipe that grin off your face, we are–” “Ubers on the way we gotta dip” Milton jumped up, saving Mateo from falling deeper into the hole he started to dig
…
“Who you textin’?” Mitch bumped her shoulder into him and he flinched
“HUHH?” he stuck the phone in his pocket, missing and dropping it on the sticky bar floor.
With a loud snort he grinned at Mitch. Innocently. Like he hadn't been staring at Laurie's pictures all night long.
They've been at Rosies for a while now, lingering with the Friday night crowd. Mateo wasn't sure when they got there. Or how. He blinked at CASH and woke up typing away on his phone. The whiskey shots really got to him.
He bent down to pick up his phone, opening it to a reply from Laurie, his heart skipping a beat
“She asked if were havin’ fun” his voice was distant, he for sure wasn't gonna remember this moment tomorrow
Mitch said something and when Mateo raised his phone to take a picture of them he noticed Russel lean in. Milton was also there, who he hadn't seen since they arrived. He was way more drunk than before. Without looking twice he sent off the picture. Excited about her reply.

1:06 am, Sunstone Ranch, Bucking Horse Hut
In nothing but his cowboy boots and his underwear, Mateo jumped in his truck, followed by Laurie who was also only clad in HIS shirt and the shorts she quickly found in the pile of clothes they had left behind.
Corey had the privilege to sit in the trunk.
…
Birdie wasn't giving birth, nor was she in any way harmed. Thankfully.
“She probably smelled a coyote. Or one of the dogs scared her. It's not uncommon for pregnant mares to be easily frightened.”
Birdie was one of the breeding mares, currently pregnant with the foal of an award winning bucking horse. A pretty expensive foal that was under no way allowed to get harmed.
Mateo swerved the searchlight around, carefully scanning the field, illuminating an annoyed Birdie walking in circles, her pregnant belly making her look like a balloon about to pop. She was close to the roofed hut that Mateo had recently spent his day on top of, repairing it after a storm.
A few of the other horses slept in it, he kept his gaze running, looking for anything out of the ordinary.
“There's a dog,” Laurie pointed at a tree closeby, and lo and behold there sat Gunner – one of the younger dogs that's usually supposed to guard the stables and not the jumpy field horses. Nervously wagging his tail when Mateo locked his eyes on him.
“Gunner! Here boy!” he whistled until the medium well trained Ranchdog sprinted towards them, making Birdie to let out an annoyed neigh in protest. Don't play with a pregnant mare.
Corey excitedly leaned down to pet the blue heeler after he crawled through the fence and ran in between his legs for shelter. “So it was you ya little bugger”
“Come on boy, let's getchu back inside” Mateo slapped his thigh to call him over. His naked thigh.
The dog didn't budge, enjoying Corey's baby talk insults.
Why did every living thing on this farm like being around the Aussie more than being around Mateo? He literally took Gunner with him to the Rodeo in Louisiana a few days ago. He sat in the passenger seat for christ sake.
“Traitor” Mateo mumbled, as Laurie slid her hand in his. At least someone cared.
Another half hearted whistle and he turned to walk back to the truck. Laurie's little chuckle as he tugged her along, making him smile to himself.
…
With the Aussie and the dog back in their designated spots, Mateo felt relieved.
The Ranch was quiet again, the small lights on the wall buzzing in the night. Nobody knew what time it was, but Mateo didn't mind, too busy watching Laurie.
With every step, the dirt and stones crunched underneath her sole. She slowly walked back towards where the truck was parked. Mateo joined her.
The field ahead was loud, billions of katydids singing away, cicadas screaming from the trees, a few fireflies dotting their existence into the Texan brush country that Mateo grew up in.
God, it was his favourite sound in the world.
An orchestra that would always remind him of home, of his childhood where he'd spent countless nights chasing around the moths that swarm the ranchlights, collecting them to feed to the chickens in the morning.
He stopped next to Laurie who stood watching the lights of the cities tinkering in the distance. Far beyond the fields and dirt roads. Far beyond Munsten or Annenberg.
“Mateo?”
“Hm?”
He felt Laurie's hand intertwine with his as she moved closer.
“Do you wanna know what I'm thinking about?”
Her voice was quiet amidst the screams coming from the evergreen trees. Sweeter than sugar.
"What's that?”
“How that chimpanzee was even allowed to play on the field”
“No im serious, this movie makes no fucking sense” she said with a chuckle
“Do you know what I' M thinkin’ about?”
“Your balls, eh?”
Mateo snorted again, “No you rascal. I was thinkin’ how if the moon could speak, it would sound like you”
Laurie whipped her head around to look at him, and even in the night, Mateo saw how her big doe eyes sparked.
“Oh I was way off,” she mumbled
“Yeah perv”
With a chuckle she snuggled closer, Mateo put his arm around her – stroking her shoulder.
“Why do you think that?” Laurie asked after a moment, gently scratching the tips of her fingers across his back
He mulled it over, enjoying her touch
“It just makes sense, love”
“I think it would sound more like this” Laurie deepened her voice, making it sound hollow
Mateo giggled, squeezing her shoulder tighter
“And what would the sun sound like?”
“Hmm” Laurie was quiet for a moment
She cleared her airways “Oh howdy yall it would sound sum like dis yall”
Not expecting her to talk in a bad southern accent, Mateo laughed out loud
“Whys it from Tennessee?”
“What! I tried to make it sound like you!”
He laughed again, the kind of laugh that makes you gasp instead of breathe.
“This is what I sound like??” he pressed out
“Wait wait I want to try again”
Mateo's grin was about to break his face in two. Shit, he really was starting to lose it for this girl.
“I lauve mah truck, mah horses and… tittttss” she started giggling
It was useless, at this point anything she said would make him break out in laughter.
“Can you say the last part again” his voice was rough
“Tiittsss” her voice was aggressively southern, the worst try at an accent he had ever heard
“That's perfect”
“Fuck i forgot to say Astroes”
Holding back another wave of childish giggles, Mateo coughed his lungs clear
“Hold on Laurie its my turn”
Laurie squeaked in response
Mateo took a deep breath in, “Hee cowboy you got a big dick or what eh?”
This time it was Laurie's turn to start wheezing, so hard she keeled over, dragging Mateo with her due to him still having his arm slung tight around her.
“Again” she laughed, almost close to the ground
“Cant I get another cocktail bartendy, eh?”
“You do know I'm not Canadian right?”
"You're not?”
Their brainless banter kept on going for some time, Laurie losing her balance and making them both fall on their ass at some point.
It was nice, even though they could see indications of cars speed along the highway that connected the two major cities surrounding Sunstone – for a moment it really felt like they were the only two people alive.

Laurie Woods is the older sister of two siblings and her parents live with them in Hillsboro. She visits them regularly during the holidays. Laurie Woods plays softball for her college team in Seattle. Her favourite team are the Seattle Mariners.
That's about as much as most people know about Laurie, though her teammates would be able to add certain details such as:
She likes to smoke when she's drunk, she likes reading crime novels, she can do a handstand for a few seconds, she always has extra hair ties in her bag, she's the loudest person in the dugout.
Maybe it's because she never had close friends growing up but usually people don't want to know much more about her. Some ask about how she got into softball and where she's from and Laurie gives them her generic answer that already runs on automation. At eight, she begged her mom to sign her up for a local softball team after watching a few MiLB games in the ballpark that her dad helped out at. She's from Oregon but her family is Peruvian.
Or rather, her mother is. Her biological father is some white guy that wanted to study in Peru. Her real father is Cuban American. Oregonian but Floridian. It's complicated.
Thankfully, her mom wasn't one to hide her past from Laurie, telling stories about her adventures during the early 2000s. Anything to keep little Laurie entertained while they hiked through the mountains of Portland.
Growing up in Arequipa, a metropolis in the south of Peru, Angélica – her mothers name – had a bright future ahead of her. In 2002 she graduated high school with high honors and went to study medicine in a local university.
There she got pregnant with Laurie almost immediately. At only 18 years old, Laurie's mom didn't know what to do about her situation. The only family still close to her was her father who completely cut her off financially after finding out she got into it with that young English guy who was there for an exchange semester. An embarrassment to his status as head of the local church or some bullshit like that.
Of course the English guy booked it back to Europe, not wanting to have anything to do with Angélica's predicament. He even denied that he got her pregnant in the first place.
So with the last money she had and five months pregnant, she decided to abandon her life in Arequipa and fly to Florida to live with her childhood friend who had moved to the states a few years prior in hopes for better job opportunities. Eliana still lives down there to this day and without her help, Laurie's mom would have had no chance of survival.
It was also Eliana that introduced Angélica to Laurie's Dad – Juan Woods. Technically her step-dad but Laurie never thought of him that way. He was a father to her the moment she was born in a cheap hostel on new years eve 2003, Miami. The wonder of 2004, as her mom called her.
Juan was the one that took care of Laurie's mom, even if he himself was still a 20 year old guy – working at a fast food restaurant and barely able to feed himself, let alone the three of them. But that's how they lived. Laurie's mom started taking odd jobs, being a cleaning lady, working as a receptionist in shady motels, all the while having a little Laurie get babysat by her friends. For six years.
Their life in Florida was chaotic, full of love and friends. An interesting place, but Laurie's mom wasn't happy. She wished to continue her studies and get Laurie out of Miami. So she married Juan, taking his last name.
She was never very specific with the next parts but they somehow moved to Oregon with the help of her grandparents – her fathers adoptive parents that were quite wealthy.
Laurie's mom was always very vague with how everything worked out but Laurie assumed her grandparents agreed to help them if they legally changed Laurie's last name to match theirs. Some form of weird power deal. Laurie wasn't sure. But that's how they landed in Hillsboro, where Laurie's mom continued studying medicine while her father started helping out at the new ballpark that opened close to them. And soon her mom was pregnant with Laurie's little sister and two years later, her brother.
Similar to Noella, Baseball has been around Laurie since she was born. But in another way.
Whenever her mom was at work in Florida, Laurie's dad would take little toddler Laurie to baseball games. In her memory they were real professional ballgames but later her dad told her that it was just him and his friends playing on the streets at night.
Laurie doesn't really remember her childhood in Miami, only the sound of her father hitting the ball with his bat, the bright hot summers and the colour of the ocean. A shade of blue that she only ever found again when she visited the Gulf of Mexico with Noella that summer.
It's weird. More often than not she forgets that she spent the first six years of her life getting babysat by strangers and going to the beach. The only thing reminding her is the player description on her college's website.
Laurie Woods. Born Miami, FL.
Sure, sometimes she feels like there's a part of her that needs to go back down there. Like going to Miami would change everything that ever felt out of place, like it would explain something inside her.
But trusting in that is childish. One of many ways to get disappointed and then what. Nothing changes and she goes back to Oregon anyway, because that's her home, that's where her family is, that's where she actually grew up.
So maybe if the occasion comes up, she'd like to visit her birthplace but trusting in a made up perfect place is not going to alter her decisions up north.
Just like trusting in the promises of a rancher from Texas.
Mitch says it was the mullet that got Mateo the job behind the bar. Yes, when he was 19 he rocked a clean short mullet. Not even he could escape that fate.
Two years ago, January of 2023, his tio Manu found out about a job opening at the Harvest Moon Sports Bar. It was for a busser, so he immediately suggested it to Mateo who had been discussing his thoughts about getting a weekend job to save up some extra cash with him.
And so, because not many people were throwing themselves at the job in this small town, it didn't take long for him to get hired. Also the owner is a huge Houston Astros fan. Maybe that helped. A little.
Initially he didn't want to work at a bar, not having enough social stamina to survive speaking to the drunk old farmers or rowdy truckers that frequented the Harvest Moon. But what else was he gonna find? The town museum?
During the first six months he was mostly cleaning dishes or clearing tables, depending on how much was going on. Simple enough for him.
But when they hired his favourite coworker Maureen, back then a 16 year old energetic ginger, Mateo got promoted to be a waiter, getting taught how to mix drinks and work behind the bar. Luckily for him, most of the time everyone just wanted beer, and he knew his beers.
It was also around that time that Mitch cut his mullet right before his 19th birthday and all of a sudden his tips started getting higher. Older women would wink at him when they left, telling the owner how good of a job he did in making their drinks. He especially enjoyed when couples came in and the insecure husbands glared at him.
He loved the compliments he got, specifically from young tourists that just passed through the town to get from Houston to Austin or vice versa. He'd tell them about the Sunstone Ranch while pouring their drinks, flashing cheeky grins when only one of them was looking at him.
He'd drop things like "I work with rodeo horses, lady, trust I know my way around the saddle" or "Usually we charge for riding lessons but I can make exceptions for pretty girls" and then he'd skedaddle to the other side of the bar, leaving his recipient on their feet.
It's not like he hasn't been doing alright before – having the Rancher status coming with a few percs – but this was different. Way different.
The first girl he hooked up with while working at the Harvest Moon started a chain reaction for him that she never even found out about, having left town right afterwards. The story goes that three days after he served a girl who was shortly in town for a job – he never found out what the job was, imagining that she was probably a reporter – she came back. Right before they opened in the afternoon, she demanded to see him.
Her being in her late twenties, he untruthfully told her he was twenty one and agreed to come by her hotel when he finished his shift that night. And so he did. Some shady Motel off of 134.
Not even three days later another girl stayed at the bar until he finished working, promising to give him the time of his life. And two weeks after that came the next encounter, this time two girls.
This went on until summer was over. Frequenting between hotel rooms and the back of his car, his hoe summer was slowly getting to him.
Late August he got too cocky, too carried away with making the customers happy, his boss found out about it and joked that he should just become a prostitute if he liked sleeping around so much for measly tips.
It was quite the humbling talk and he decided to quit the job the following month. Enough money had been saved.
Mitch keeps saying that he got fired because he wouldnt stop fucking the customers, but Mateo disagrees. He says he quit because he had enough money and working at a sports bar during peak baseball season was incredibly exhausting. And he did start feeling a little bit used, it was a weird time.
Swearing to abstinence lasted around two months before he got invited to a rodeo afterparty where a girl mistook him for one of the riders. And he wasn't just gonna say no now was he.
He spent the next summer mostly at a sister ranch in Mexico that was owned by his aunt. His other aunt. Mitch joined him for two weeks, the two of them staying in a cheap hotel in Cancún, which meant a lot of getting drunk with college students until he couldn't remember his name anymore.
Mateo is notoriously the worst flirt ever when he's drunk so he was usually just watching futbol on the TV while taking shots. But he didn't have sex the whole time.
Sometime in winter he got his dick sucked at a rodeo show again.

⋆ ℧ 𓃗 ℧ ⋆⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ⋆ ℧ 𓃗 ℧ ⋆
Sometime between the hours of 8pm and 2am. Who the fuck knew. Certainly not Mateo and Laurie.
There was something weirdly calming about a sleeping Mateo. Like hearing your dog snore in the trunk of your car after a long day of hiking through the woods surrounding Portland.
Even though in this case, the hiking would be sex and the woodlands, the small Sunstone Ranch cabin. But well.
Laurie closed the portable TV that was propped up at the head of the bed – barely able to keep her eyes open, let alone follow the plot of this random sports movie for kids from the 90s. Apparently the chimpanzee was a really good baseman or something.
Some bullshit plot that they were laughing at for a good while until Mateo became quiet. His light snores confirming that he did in fact fall asleep on his stomach.
Rolling onto her side to watch him, she remembered how his face was turned away from her. Shucks.
She studied the back of his head, how his hair parted, revealing slivers of skin, strands clumpy with sweat, falling onto his thick neck. His skin had the hint of an everlasting sunburn to it, textured with moles and dots. He was hugging the pillow that his head rested on, the muscles on his arm traceable. That was her favourite part to stare at. To gawk at. The way his skin dipped along his muscles and stretched across his wide shoulders. Stretchmarks where he grew faster than his body could keep up. Dotted with freckles that were only visible after taking a closer look.
A long faded scar ran from right below his armpit over his ribs. Without thinking she reached out her hand and ran her thumb over it, not having noticed it before. Curious about how he got it.
With a loud sniffle he shifted, a response to her tickling touch. Lifting his head and turning it to face her, his eyes still peacefully closed, he resumed sleeping. Mouth slightly agape.
Her eyes wandered to his lower body, still only in his underwear.
After they had finished fucking each others brains out, Laurie proceeded put on his shirt for a visit to the toilet, needing something to cover up in case someone wanted to find the source of the sex noises.
It fit her pretty well, she shortly considered stealing it. Laurie was never the type of girl who looked tiny in her boyfriend's clothes, with shirts draping over them like a dress. Boyfriend?
As she washed her face in the bathroom, she had to remind herself that Mateo was only a prolonged hookup. A really long hookup.
Or would it be considered fooling around? They were fooling around together.
Meeting each other's family members and friends.
Drinking and watching baseball together, kissing in the back of his car, talking about anything that would come to mind. Normal fooling around stuff right?
Laurie stared at the reflection of herself in the small mirror. At the faded rolling stones print on the shirt.
“Okay so here's the options” Mateo held up about four DVDs when she had returned from the bathroom. “Baseball movie number one, football church movie, speaking dog movie but its sad and another baseball movie but this one has a monkey that can pitch a 95 or sum”
“It has a what?”
“Yeah.” Mateo bit his lip and grinned, wiggling his eyebrows. He stood up to carry the tiny TV to the bed, only wearing his underwear and his stupid backwards cap. Laurie's breath stocked at the sight of the muscles in his back twitching. Actually at the whole sight of him. She could look at him simply exist all day.
“Monkey Baseball Time” he squeaked like an excited kid and rolled on his back, waiting for her to join him on the bed.
Yeah, just fooling around.
…
Mateo let out a louder snore, quickly blinking his eyes open, Laurie realized her fingertips were still inspecting his ribcage. A confused moan rumbled out of the cowboy as he turned on his back, adjusting to waking up from his slumber. Laurie smiled and planted her hand on his chest.
Another confused grunt left him and he threw his head back, trying to get a look at the now closed TV.
“Did the movie end?”
His voice was low and raspy, vibrating through his chest.
“I closed it,... couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore sorry” adding a yawn, she smiled at him, slowly blinking, her hand mindlessly sliding back and forth on his chest.
“That's okay” he rolled back on his stomach, hugging his pillow while throwing his left arm across Laurie and pulling her close. She shuffled herself comfortable, snuggling up into his side and clinging onto his arm like she was hanging off a broad treebranch.
They were now a giant lump of bodies, smelling like cold sweat and sex. But Mateo didn't seem to mind, closing his eyes again as he dug his nose into the crook of her neck.
“So…” she said after a long moment of content silence – scared that Mateo was gonna fall back asleep again. He replied with a little sound that sort of resembled a snort.
She started stroking his arm, lightly massaging his tricep.
“Whats that scar on your rib from?”
Mateo chuckled, blowing air into her neck, “I slayed a dragon”
Laurie pinched his arm, making him laugh. That laugh that always sent shockwaves to her heart.
“Okay okay”, he mumbled, pressing her closer, intertwining his left leg with hers. His crotch pressed firmly into her thigh, making her excruciatingly aware of his dick.
The less he was talking the more she felt like rubbing up against him. Massaging his tricep, she waited.
—
It's been a while since he thought about that scar on his ribs. It was faded into oblivion, a barely conscious memory from his preteen years.
How did Laurie even notice it?
“Hm?” Lauries wiggled her fingers on his arm as if she was playing guitar, impatient about his story.
He tried not to think of his dick rubbing against her leg every time she shifted her body slightly, unable to keep still. There weren't any more condoms left in his wallet.
Mateo sighed.
“When I was … twelve? Thirteen? I was an annoying teenage boy with complexes.” Laurie snorted lightly, he continued, “There was a tornado that broke a few fences and made all the animals run wild, so I wanted to help.“
That tornado wasn't anything big, but Mateo remembered how scared he was about the Ranch. How he listened in on his father calling Mateo's aunt to check if everything was alright. Back when the two of them still lived in downtown Houston.
Mitch had called him after it dispersed, telling Mateo that the tornado just barely scraped her house in Annenberg but he had to come down to check on Sunstone as soon as possible.
She was scared that it might've hurled away some of the horses. Which was obviously impossible – considering the measly strength of it – but for the two dramatic kids they were, it seemed realistic.
“Are tornados common here?” Laurie asked
“Ive seen a few but that one destroyed the most at the Ranch. My uncle ordered me to get lost so he could herd all the lost buckin’ horses together without it gettin dangerous for me”
“I take it you didn't listen”
Mateo snickered. Damn right his stubborn ass didn't listen.
“I was a great help. Up until I got chased into jumpin’ over a barbed wire fence”
Laurie quietly gasped.
Mateo remembered how he had run off to get a last sweep of the area. He knew the fields like the back of his hand, the routes the horses would take when running off.
But no one expected him to find a highly aggressive stallion still lingering in the back corner of one of the fields. The fence that surrounded the property was not far, Mateo planned to sprint over it and inform his uncle on where the horse was.
Be a good help.
The stallion was still young, incredibly untrained and when Mateo started circling around him, he suddenly charged at him.
Not being able to stop a giant aggressive horse at twelve years old, Mateo hastily climbed the fence, which he didn't realize was barbed wire. His shirt got caught and he tripped, falling down the other side head first, slicing his skin open on one of the prongs in the process.
He was safe behind the fence, the stallion trotting away, so twelve year old Mateo simply laid in the dirt, surrounded by silence, catching his breath and holding the deep cut on his side.
Nobody knew where he was, nor that he was injured in the dry brush fields of Texas. At some point he got up and limped back to where he last saw his uncle and a few of the other Ranchers.
“I was so embarrassed, I think in that moment I would've been better off if the bronc trampled me to death but instead I was just stumbling through the fields with a slashed rib and a billion little cuts from the fence”
“Stop… I want to give baby Mateo a hug” Laurie empathetically groaned and squeezed down on his arm, circling her thumb over his sensitive skin.
“Nah he deserved it”
“NO” she squealed, offended that he would even suggest that. She was so cute.
“Anyway I found my uncle at some point and he immediately took me back to the Ranch. But I did tell him where I last saw the bronc, so actually it was worth it” Mateo grinned
Laurie sighed
“Did you have to go to the hospital for it?”
“Mhm” Mateo mumbled into her neck “I also sprained my wrist which i didn't want to admit until it started swelling a few hours later and my dad noticed and took me to one in Houston that same night. Got stitches on my ribs and a sexy cast. Shoulda seen me”
He felt Laurie's shoulder shake in a light chuckle, "I'm guessin’ you were too proud to tell anyone about your wrist on top of bleeding to death, right?"
“Of course, I wasn't supposed to be out there, I didn't even tell anyone about the cut on my ribs until I practically fainted. Lasted over an hour though!” Mateo smiled. Somehow feeling a sense of pride at his younger self's resilience.
“Awee baby” Laurie cooed in genuine sympathy, squeezing him tighter. Mateo bit down his grin at her baby talk, weirdly enjoying it.
“It wasn't easy, Tio Manu kept askin’ if I was a’righ while we rode back to the Ranch. And then he called my dad to pick me up. I ain't never seen that man drive from Houston to Sunstone that fast”
“And he didn't even know you were literally dying yet. Ughh poor little baby Mateo”
“It wasn't that bad, Laurie, I was fine. But also I think my dad has an extra sense for stuff like that”
“For knowing when you're dying?”
Mateo snorted and planted his hand on Laurie's face, shaking it while Laurie giggled into his palm.
“I was fine! That was nothin’, it just scarred a little.”
Laurie pulled his hand down to place it on her chest, intertwining her fingers with his in the process.
“What was your worst injury then?” she challenged after thinking for a beat, drawing circles on the top of his thumb.
A laugh escaped Mateo “I cant rank injuries, I dont know”
He didn't want to think about the one that would definitely get the throne
“Okay then what was a bad one? Did you get bitten by a horse once?” Laurie played with his hand, tracing the calluses that he's had on his palm since he was a kid. A sudden wave of drowsiness rolled over him, her touch lulling his brain into standby.
“Somethin’ like that” he yawned into her neck, “One chomped my thigh once, i still got a pic of that bruise”
“So that was actually me as a horse”
Mateo laughed and cupped her boob over her – actually his – shirt, squeezing down as a response to which she squealed, turning her body into him.
When he opened his eyes back up, her beautiful face was barely a breath away from his. Both of them still had the smell of sex on their lips, Mateo couldn't keep his eyes away from her pouty mouth no matter how much he tried to stay composed.
Darting her tongue out to wet her lips, she could definitely feel his semi resting against her thigh.
“Dont tell me you’re hard again, Mateo”
He bit his lip, trying to calm his grin about to break his face in half and squeezed her boob again, his thumb playing with her nipple.
“No”
“Whats this then”
Laurie reached down to palm his rapidly hardening boner.
“I don't know” he mumbled, involuntarily bucking his hip, seeking Laurie's grip.
“What do you want to do about that?” she teased, running her palm up and down along his clothed shaft.
“You know exactly what I want you to do”
Laurie's eyes glazed over, her teasing nature replaced by lust. “Oh yeah?”
Removing his hand from her chest, he grabbed the back of her head and hungrily crashed his mouth into hers, her tongue immediately slipping down his throat.
Laurie's fingers found their way inside his underwear, smearing the pre down his tip. Shuddering, Mateo grunted and rolled on his back, not breaking up the kiss but pulling Laurie with.
Grabbing the hem of her shirt, he pulled it over her head, freeing her bare chest. Latching his lips onto her tit, he started swirling his tongue around her hard nipple, to which she let out a pleased sigh.
“You love touching my tits don't you” Laurie chuckled, her hand slowly stroking him, still teasing.
Mateo felt impatient, primal, a horny cloud lowering on his mind.
“You love when I put my dick in your mouth don't you”
Her grip tightened around his shaft, he almost winced in pleasure. Glaring at him, she started grinning harder, filthy need swimming in her eyes.
“Why don't you put it th–”
BAM BAM BAM
Three knocks on the door interrupted her, a yelp of terror bursting out of her chest. Mateo swung upright, groaning in anger when an Australian voice emerged from the other side of the door.
“MATE WAKE UP AND CALL TIO, I THINK BIRDIE IS GIVING BIRTH”
Laurie hastily put on the shirt that Mateo had ripped off of her not even a minute ago.
“Who's giving birth?” she mumbled, throwing Mateo a confused look.
Tonight would be the perfect night for that Australian to suddenly disappear. Mateo thought over his options. He could knock him out and dump his body in the Oriole Lake. But Laurie loved that lake so he had to think of something else… Maybe he could send him out into the woods and hope the coyotes eat him.
“No one's giving birth…” he grumbled when he realized he forgot to reply to Laurie. Squeezing her thigh, he stood up from the bed and that's when another set of knocks broke the silence.
“AYE! WAKE UP MATE”
Mateo ripped open the door to the blonde boy impatiently jumping from one foot to the other.
“You have exactly ten seconds to explain yourself”
“Ill do it in five if you just follow me” Corey didn't seem intimidated, but more…annoyed. Anger grew in Mateo's stomach and he had to remind himself that killing the new Ranchhand was illegal and probably wouldn't be a good look in front of Laurie.
He let out a long sigh.
“If Birdie was giving birth then we shouldn't interfere anyway. Didn't I tell you that?”
“She sounds in a lot of pain though”
Mateo fixed his hair, trying not to think about the blue balls he was gonna have the rest of the night if he didn't resolve this quickly.
“Did you see what she was doing or?”
“Nah mate its fuckin scary out there and ah dont know where she is. I just heard her”
Slowly Mateo's brain started working again. One by one the cogs in his brain began turning, until he remembered he forgot to close the stables.
Lowk forgot to mention that it was Mateos bday on the 11th. And for those who know ball (aka those who read the chapters) know why thats an important date for the lore...
