After settling in at his new home in Pall Mall, Tennessee, WWI hero Sgt. York became involved in several business ventures. Among other things, he ended up buying this mill near his home. Today, it’s part of the Alvin York State Historical Park.
Most of us have seen the 1941 movie “Sgt. York” about the life of the WWI hero Alvin C. York. To show their appreciation of York’s heroism during the war, the State of Tennessee presented him with a home and farm down in the fertile “bottomland” that was so much better for farming than the rocky, mountainous land where he grew up.
This is the actual house and farm that was purchased for Sgt. York. It’s located in Pall Mall, Tennessee.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to go inside the house when we visited it in Februry, 2017, because it was closed for restoration. We hear that it’s just recently been reopened.

There’s been a hospital on this site going back as far as the War Between The States. These days, the building stands unused and ignored in Newton, Mississippi.

This abandoned house near Newport, Tennessee, is right alongside a strong-running creek. We left quickly after looking in an outbuilding and seeing a large box filled with empty pint and quart jars.
In Newton, Mississippi, the bank’s been torn down and, now, only the abandoned vault remains.
Maybe they’re planning to keep it safe.

I saw a video on youtube recently where somebody was calling these things death ray towers. They blamed the towers’ mysterious presence on the government, who they were convinced was using them to fry our brains.
Truth be known, this is just one of many old abandoned AT&T microwave towers that were used for transmitting and receiving telephone communications, along with other signals like TV or radio. This one happens to be in Newton, Mississippi.
The towers were the cutting edge of technology several decades ago; but were all abandoned as newer methods of communication rendered them obsolete. AT&T eventually sold them off, and some were converted for other uses. On this one, you can see modern cell phone antennas mounted between the big, ancient, original “horn” antennas.
No brain-frying going on here, unless someone’s using a particular brand of cell phone that’s lately been known to catch on fire.
The old railroad station in Mansfield, Louisiana, has an appointment with a track hoe. Soon to be destroyed, this remnant of years gone by is patiently waiting for its last day.
