Also, you seem to have some free roam "toys"? I made some for mine as well. Each and everytime im so proud of it and think "they have so many things already" and then after a while i start getting tired of it and want to do something knew. Any ideas on that as well? Things to keep outside of the cage for freeroam time to be more intresting for them.

Hi! Congrats on your new friends! Here are my current set-ups. I don't tend to change the layout much. Ben, on the left, has a lot more ledges which he needs due to his arthritis, which makes it more difficult to rearrange things as he really needs the connections to get between levels. Lily and Rose, on the right, are younger and more agile, but Rose has cataracts so I don't want to cause her to fall by things not being where she's used to them.

Cages include hides, hammocks, chew toys, a 14" tictac wheel (we love tictac wheels, they're pricey, but sturdy and quiet), and a heat pad for those who haven't lost privileges from chewing it. There are more detailed photos of what they've got in there cages here, and some of things they have for freeroaming here.

You can provide them with a digging tank, filled with soil, or bedding and hay. Mine never got on with it particularly well and have a tank full of cardboard boxes and tubes to hide in and destroy.

You can do training with them. They've also had puzzle toys, snuffle mats and activity mats.

A fun occassional (like once a month) treat is a nut in the shell they have to get into.

A cheap and easy toy is to put some treats into a toilet paper tube, stuff it with hay, and fold the ends in.

Cuz i mean, look at themmmm! They love to stare out the "window" lol i think its the cutest thing :)

Ive been wanting a tictac wheel but idk about the matter of shipping to other countries. Is it only for UK? Or does it ship to other places as well? I do know its pricey, but on the long run sounds like a better investment than the wooden wheels that they will chew through eventually. Ig itll save up money over the years because itd last way longer.

Would an aquariam work as a digging tank?

Is it a problem for most toys to be handmade instead of bought? I like handmaking things and it saves money as i use cardboard to do most things.

Again with the handmade things, i like sewing, could it be okay to handmake those two things? They arent extremely difficult and itd keep me ocupied and entretained for a while lol

I do make some toilet paper roll toys with hay and some hidden treats for them sometimes, they love them! Unfortunately i dont have any pics of those :(

I also have some branches other than the ones on the pics so they can climb more :)

Naming a character can be a daunting thing, because you want your reader to connect to your characters and the first thing they know about them and the way to indentify them is often their name.

But not all people go with their given name. And that's where nicknames come into play.

Different forms of nicknames

diminutives

pet names

names based off events or activities

Why use a nickname

the character doesn't like their given name

it's a long or complicated name

people cannot spell or pronounce their given name

someone just called them a certain name and it stuck

people around them like to give nicknames to everyone

it's a name that automatically has a nickname that is known in their language

Who uses the nicknames

you have to choose who is calling your character by a nickname and which one

what are their parents and the whole family calling them?

is it a nickname so common, that even their teachers or coworkers call them like that?

is it an inside joke with their friends?

do different friends call them different names? (childhood friends vs. friends they made as adults)

is it a nickname that only one person would ever call them?

How to make a nickname

nicknames are often based on the first name of the person

use only the first (or first two) syllables of the character's name = (Jessica; Michael)

use only the last syllables of the name = (Isabella)

your character can also go by their surname

or by their middle name

they can go by their initials = (Taylor Johnson = TJ)

base a name on the character's looks (don't be mean) = (Freckles)

base their name on their personality or their interests (again, don't be mean)

Different nicknames in different languages

in English, you can often see an -y or -ie at the end of the name, or the first syllable of the name

- John = Johnny; Charles = Charlie; Patricia = Patty

in Spanish, a lot of nicknames (especially for kids) end in -ita (for girls) or -ito for boys

- Carlos = Carlito; Susana = Susanita

in German, it's common to end names with -i or with -chen or -lein (which indicates cuteness and requires closeness, often not a very serious nickname)

- Jana = Jani or Janchen or Janilein; Andreas = Andi

More things to consider:

do they like all their nicknames?

did they try to give themself a nickname, but no one used it?

do some people not even know their real name because they know their nickname?

Your stories will always feel a bit boring to you, because you read them a million times.

Sorry this took me some time, but there is so much I could talk about here. So I try to go with some basics.

How to create a character

some examples for what I usually try to find out about my characters, regardless which genre I’m writing in

basics

name, age, place of birth, where they live, nationality, ethnicity, education, occupation, religious affiliation, financial status, gender identity, sexual orientation

physical appearance

eye, hair and skin colour

distinguishing features (tattoos, birthmarks, scars, visible disabilities,...)

height and weight (proportions!)

walk (slow, fast, skipping,...)

tics and mannerisms (touching their face, blinking, grinding their teeth,...)

speech patterns and communication style

talk (slow, fast, slurred etc.)

accents and dialects

using slang, sounding educated, trying to hide a dialect/accent etc.

do they talk with their whole body? (gestures?)

extra question for speech and physical appearance: can people tell where the character is coming from and what influences they have from their heritage?

past and present

how did they grow up?

happy memories

academic career

hobbies

past trauma or important turning points that still influence their life

specific lifestyle

social and political ideology

future

dreams and goals

expectations from themself and from outside

Relationship maps

for longer stories it’s even more important to understand your characters relationships to each other

two different approaches:

1. proper list of family, friends, love interests, “enemies”, everyone else

family

who is still alive and where do they live?

who did they grow up with?

what was and what is their relationship?

friends

how long do they know each other?

would they trust them with a secret?

how close are they?

love interests

what is their relationship status?

what do they like about them?

is it reciprocated?

if they are not together why not?

“enemies”

how do they know each other?

what do they not like about each other?

did they always hate each other?

can their relationship become better?

2. love, like, hate categories

make a list of people your character loves (use the different forms of love: romantic, familial, friendly,...)

make a list of acquaintances

make a list of people they dislike and people who dislike them

you could even try to draw their relationships with each other

make sure you include if the relationship changes throughout your story

Those are just some basic things I could think of that I usually like to write down about my characters. Depending on the story there are some variations of this and more information about specific topics.

Pro tip for developing your characters: write short stories or little sequences with your characters that don’t neccessarily have anything to do with your story. I think of it as fanfiction of your own work. Put your characters with their intended roles and relationships in different situations and just write and let it play out. This is a good tool to find out if and how the characters work together. And it can even give you new ideas for their relationships to each other and new skills or habits for your characters. It’s basically a test run for your cast before you go into your bigger story.

And one last important thing: don’t get too stuck on an idea. Characters can sometimes develop a life of their own. You don’t always have a conscious control over them. So don’t be afraid to change it if something is not working out or you find something else that is working even better.

I think I had one ask about something like this before, but I also couldn't find it. I don't write often for specific fandoms, because I'm often not in that fandom.

But I did read all the books as a child and I watched the movies. So I'll try to remember what Hogwarts was like.

Hogwarts Prompts

Their potions master decided that the students needed to be better at team work and assigned teams on the first day and is not willing to change the teams for the rest of the school year.

There is a new student in their house and everyone is confused, because there was never a student who decided to change schools in the middle of the school year. And some are more intrigued by this than others.

A lot of wizards and witches are not that interested in the muggle world and there are not a lot of students in this year's Muggle Studies who actually take it seriously. But Character A needs to pass this one and realises quickly that Character B is their best chance for a tutor.

It wasn't easy to be an athlete at Hogwarts if you're not playing Quidditch. So a group of students from each house decide to start a football league at their school.

These are basically just ideas I had while thinking about Hogwarts and you can just include romance, like making the captains of two of the football teams butt heads on the field, but like each other outside of football.

If these sound strange for Hogwarts or wouldn't work I apologize, because while I like it well enough, I'm just not an active fan.
