…and it has nothing to do with pedophilia, race play, or bestiality!

Dominance and submission is much older than mankind. As long as there have been living creatures on this planet, the game of dominance has been played when it comes to group hierarchy. 

When submitting to a dominant in the wild, an animal will do things that physically make itself lower than the leader, like crawl as low as it can, expose its belly, and tuck it’s tail between its legs. Its silent statement is, “I submit to be below you, and I will appear as small and vulnerable as I can to you in order to communicate my submission to your dominance.” 

Outsiders to BDSM will often open the door, peek inside, and jump to conclusions that our established dynamics are a way to explore something that is illegal and taboo within our society. They send us messages berating us for glorifying pedophilia, slavery, and bestiality, because they don’t understand why we have chosen these areas to explore D/s sex within. The truth is, these dynamics chose us, as much as we chose them.

Just as within nature, submissives within BDSM want to appear as small and vulnerable as they can to their partners in an effort to communicate their submission physically, mentally, and emotionally to those dominant partners. So submissives look to the world for the places that are the lowest, and most vulnerable, in order that they can feel the illusion of being basic and helpless, and lend their dominants the illusion of being even more than what they are, while in the interactions of their relationships. It is from those naturally baser beings where we derive the characters of littles, slaves, and pets as the prevailing submissive dynamics, not out of some fantasy that enable us to explore sexual taboos, or break moral or legal codes. For what is more vulnerable than children, animals, or slaves? Perhaps you would say that objects are lower, in which case I would point out that many submissives love to be objectified for just that reason. 

So please, if you are just peeking in the door to the community for the first time, or haven’t considered what I’ve just pointed out, understand that it’s not about taboo. It’s about roleplay, and the vulnerability of becoming the most physically, intellectually, and emotionally basic thing you can think of for your dominant, that they might feel more powerful, and dominant in its wake.
