See what im sharing is absolutely the goofy ass ramblings to a friend of mine on discord. But the thing is, the ramblings is about how i draw crystals! it stops making sense partway in but enjoy nonetheless. Copy pasting the rambling of mine as it was one big message. oh and images attached of course!!
so Diaspore is kinda Quartzy in vibe, so its on the translucent side which is why those curved lines are both blured and flat color drawn in, because you can see that those veins blur inside the gemstone itself in the real gem the top of the gem is LESS translucent than the lower parts but it is still to some degree translucent so what im organizing in my head is the following
1A. Geometry as in the shapes it looks like normally 1B. geometry as in how it forms, if its a rounded gem / polished or if its a gem that's Shard based or Slate based, they break differently and thusly any chips in them would look different
2A. where my light source is coming from 2B. how the light source interacts with the gemstone (If its translucent, then i have to consider inclusions on the gemstone that might be More opaque than the surrounding gemstone. Example being something like rutile backed quartz. rutile (aka titanium) is VERY OPAQUE while quartz can be very translucent!)
the material of it, if that changes much. so basically the texture of the gem's exterior, the level of opaque to translucent, how shiny it is, etc. this is kind of the "all of the above + more!" one cuz its hard to break the rest into separate ones.
when it comes to raw ruby, its very opaque and not quite as shiny as something like amethyst. so when you draw it, you're going to use gritty brushes to make that texture, and only really see a fistful of its colors (Base color, lightened color, shaded color) whereas with amethyst you'll see (Base color, Lighted color, shaded color, for each face. some faces of the gem are facing the light, others arent. thinner crystals will block less light, so the thickness is important to keep in mind on translucent crystals because that will adjust shading on the things immediately next to it)
