â pussydrunk!bucky , cum eating , fingering , hair pulling , swearing , nicknames eg âbabyâ. FT. BUCKY BARNES X AFAB!READER.
author note. if anyone has any reqs pls ask itâd make me sosososo happy đ
ââââââââ
the soft background noise of the tv plays in the background, along with the soft pattering of raindrops against the windows. however, these sounds are second to the lewd sounds of slurping and moaning coming from the living room of your apartment.
the two of you are on the couch, bucky lay on his stomach with his head between your legs â his hands grip your thighs gently, occasionally massaging the plump muscles, keeping them pried apart whilst he licks and sucks at your pussy, his lips wrapped around your clit as he works to bring you to the edge.
you donât know how itâs gotten to this, but youâre not complaining. bucky has been acting off all day, especially when the tower had been busy, and when everyone had disappeared, heâd pounced on you without hesitation.
your hands are in his hair, tugging and pulling in an attempt to ground yourself against the onslaught of sensations sparking through you. your head is tilted back to face the ceiling, your breathing ragged and heavy â the familiar moans and whines he has expressed his love for countless times escaping your swollen lips.
shivers wrack through you at the feeling of buckyâs stubbled cheeks brushing against the insides of your thighs with every move of his head, his hair tickling the skin of your lower abdomen almost teasingly. the coil in your stomach is already tight and youâve only been doing this for a minute or so, but itâs what bucky does to you, and you know nothing can change that.
ânghâ iâm close..â you breathe out weakly, your hips bucking up against his face to try and find more friction to bring you to your climax faster. bucky lifts his head up from between your legs, propping himself up on his elbows and instead replacing his mouth with his middle finger, slowly easing it into your hole and beginning to pump it at a steady pace.
âyeah? you gonna cum fâme, baby?â he murmurs lowly, a fucked-out smile spread across his lips, which are puffy and covered in your juices. his tongue darts out to clean himself up, though he misses the entirety of his chin, but you donât have the energy to tell him.
you can only muster a groan in response to his question, your eyes rolling back into your head when he adds a second finger and curls them to hit the spot he knows makes you cum fastest, the cool metal against your pussy lips making your hips stutter in their desperate grinding.
âfuuuuck, youâre so pretty,â he mumbles to himself, his hips beginning to rub his hard cock against the couch beneath him, his eyes glazing over and his movements faltering at the friction before he regains his focus and dips his head back down to press teasing kisses across your stomach.
he feels your walls tighten around his digits as your orgasm builds, smiling against your skin and adding another finger to help you reach your peak. this works without fault, the coil in your stomach snapping and a guttural moan ripping from your throat as you climax, your legs closing around buckyâs neck.
he eases his fingers from out of your weeping hole, pulling back his head to stare down at your cunt for a moment before dropping back down to lap up all of your cum, his fingers rubbing over your clit absentmindedly. he hums in delight as your taste spreads over his tongue, the vibrations coaxing another string of whimpers and curses from you.
after a while, he sits back and admires your tired form beneath him, spread out against the couch with a dazed expression written over your face, his own lips tugging up into a satisfied smile. he lifts up his hand and sucks each of his fingers clean, âso pretty..â he repeats, lowering himself over you and pressing his lips against yours.
you lazily lift your hands up to comb your fingers through his hair as you reciprocate the kiss, your eyes closed and your cheeks flushed. the taste of your own orgasm makes you cringe slightly but you ignore it to focus on the pleasant feeling of his weight pressed against you. the kiss is sloppy and uncoordinated, but neither of you seem to care very much, too spaced out to notice.
when he pulls away for air, bucky grins down at you as rubs his hard-on against your hip, precum having already leaked through his pants. âmy turn.â he mutters, his expression smug.
#*⌠FRANK likes it when you open your mouth for him
18+ CONTENT
âthatâs it⌠keep it open fâme, ma,â frank groans into the stifled air of the room, accompanying his ragged breathing and the explicit sound of his cock hitting the back of your throat. when you swallow around him, the muscle contracting around the tip of his dick, he chuckles hoarsely, âfuckkk..â
one of his hands is gripping the underside of your jaw, wanting to feel the length of his cock against his palm as he pulls it in and out of your eager mouth. the other, as it usually is, is buried in the hair at the nape of your neck, keeping your head at his desired angle.
the spit that gathers at the corners of your lips doesnât go unnoticed by him, but he makes no move to wipe it away, instead watching with a sort of reverence as it dribbles down your chin and onto his hand beneath. âlook at youâ so fuckinâ beautiful.â
a few more steady glides into your throat has him twitching within its confines, the hand sat under your jaw coming up to brush back a wayward strand of hair from out of your face. âiâm close, ma â that okay?â when he feels you nod around him, or at least attempt to, he hums in quiet acknowledgment, âgood girl.â
it doesnât take long for him to come, pulling out slightly to aim his load onto your waiting tongue, and his legs tremble slightly when he does, his vision momentarily blurred. itâs clear again when he looks back down at you, laughing softly at the realisation that youâve swallowed it all without him even needing to ask. it almost turns him on all over again. âcâmere.â

author note. this is so shit oml
ââââââââ
âyou gonna cum soon? huh?â frank mutters into the thick air around you as his hips snap into yours, his thick cock stretching you open in the most delicious of ways. âgonna make daddy proud?â
you can only manage a pathetic whine in response as your grip on his biceps tighten yet again â your nails dig into the skin and muscle beneath, leaving small crescent-shaped indents in their wake. âfffuck, frankâŚâ you can feel the heat building in the pit of your stomach, low and hot and unwavering in its intensity, its presence alone making you see stars.
one of his hands squeezes and fondles with your taut nipple whilst the other pulls and twists at your clit, the stimulation of both buds too overwhelming all at once. your hooded eyes stare up at his face, taking in the flush of his cheeks, his blown out pupils, his slackened jaw and chapped lips. he looks ethereal like this, you think.
âiâm s-so close, babyâŚâ he groans as his head drops to rest against your shoulder. you can feel his hot breath fanning out across your skin, his hips stuttering a little and his eyes fluttering shut in an attempt to control himself.
your fingers drift up to run through the hair at the nape of his neck, occasionally tugging on the soft strands in order to ground him to the moment, able to tell that heâs drifting off by the way his thrusts slow and his hands falter in what theyâre doing.
âiâm comingâ!â you suddenly cry out, your hands dropping from his hair to instead clutch at the sheets beneath you, your back arching up into him as the coil in the pit of your stomach stretches taut. when he registers your words, he pushes himself up onto his elbows and picks up the pace of his hips again, staring down at you with hooded eyes.
he smothers your moans with his lips when you finally cum, his tongue lapping at the inside of your mouth like a man starving. your climax racks through you like a wave crashing onto shore: powerful and unrelenting. your walls contract around his cock, making him grunt with the effort it takes not to fill you up with his cum there and then.
when youâve stopped trembling and your breaths have finally evened out, his speaks up, voice hoarse and low, âwanna cum in your mouth.â you certainly donât object â coaxing him to pull out before carefully manoeuvring yourself further down the bed, a small, excited smile tugging at the corners of your lips.
when youâre laid flat on the mattress beneath him, mouth open and waiting patiently, he grips onto the headboard in front of him and slowly lowers his cock into it. your lips instantly wrap around his length, pulling a shuddering breath from him. âholy shit..â he mumbles when your mouth meets his pelvis, watching as your cheeks hollow out around his dick and your eyes widen just slightly.
you moan against him at the taste of your own release covering his cock, the starkness of it against your tongue making your eyes roll and your stomach clench. when he begins to move his hips again, you canât help but gag as he repeatedly hits the back of your throat, your face reddening further with each thrust.
it doesnât take him long to get close to climax again, and your able to feel the veins that run along his shaft throbbing and aching with the need for release. when his sounds become more frequent and his thrusts more sloppy, thatâs when you know heâs close without him verbally telling you.
your hands rest on his hips, guiding his movements, silently encouraging him to continue, and before long, heâs whining and sputtering as he shoots his cum down your throat. humming in satisfaction, he carefully pulls out of your mouth and collapses onto the bed beside you, his chest heaving.
âthank you, baby.â frank breathes out, turning his head and watching in silent adoration when you swallow his load. he reaches over and wipes away the saliva that has gathered at the corner of your mouth, his expression soft, âyou always take me so well.â
#*⌠BUCKY likes it when you let him mark you up (and vice versa).
18+ CONTENT (sort of)
the way your skin glistens with his saliva, bruised by his teeth and lips, turns bucky on more than heâd like to admit.
it doesnât matter where: your neck, your collarbone, your jawline, your stomach or your thighs - just as long as he can leave a visible claim on your skin, heâs satisfied. he doesnât like it when you cover them up either, he wants to see what youâd let him do to you.
though you may not as much as heâd prefer, he loves when you leave a hickey on his skin, too. he feels loved, claimed, wanted, and that sends warmth blossoming through his chest and into his core. heâll stare at the marks for days in the mirror, refusing to cover them up with a shirt or some of your makeup if itâs anywhere obvious like his neck. he likes to wear them as openly as youâll allow.
like right now, itâs one of those rare times where youâre on top of him, your hands dancing across his skin and leaving goosebumps in their wake, whilst your mouth works away at his neck. the hickeys you leave are more an act of reverence than of possessiveness, of wanting to claim.
no, instead, the way your teeth scrape against his adams apple and jugular is like each a promise of yourself to him, a way of saying âiâm yoursâ without speaking the words aloud. not that you donât remind him of that consistently, of course.
when the two of you have finished (in more ways than one), he excuses himself to go and take a shower before you both settle into bed properly for the night. instead, in front of the mirror, he simply stares at the artwork youâve created with your mouth alone; along the length of his neck and across his collarbone. he traces each mark with the pad of his index finger, his lips parted in silent adoration as he exhales shaky breaths.
you are his artist, your mouth the paintbrush, and his skin the canvas. it feels otherworldly to him, and bucky very nearly goes back to ask you to create another masterpiece across the expanse of his chest.

synopsis: you haven't seen steve harrington since high school when he strolls into your shift at radioshack and unknowingly reignites an old crush. now you're totally just 'hanging out' at family video for the movies... definitely not the guy behind the counter.
tags: fluffy friends to lovers, robin & dustin playing matchmaker, rockie snippets, reader is kind of a loser (endearing), set around season 4, very loosely proofread pls forgive any illiteracy
wordcount: 7.8k
notes: this feels terribly rushed & wildly out of character at points but i wanted it out tonight & i like the idea of steve losing confidence with girls after high school idk. also i've like solely written smut for 9 months so i've lost my fluff touch but we move
IF SOMEONE had told you six months ago that Steve Harrington would reenter your life while you were getting paid minimum wage for sorting discount battery displays, you would have laughed in their face.Â
And yet here you are, dressed in an oversized uniform with a crooked name tag and half listening to Dustin Henderson. Heâs rambling enthusiastically about something called âCerebroâ (whatever the hell that means) while you attempt to decipher which drawer holds the coaxial cables he needs. Why a fourteen year old would ever need such a bizarre array of things was beyond you, but as Bob Newby once hammered into your brain during one of your first shifts here, a customer is a customer.
When the store bell rings, youâve gotten yourself into the habit of preparing for a dreary thirty minutes of explaining that the problem could probably be fixed by switching it on and off again. You arenât met with a middle-aged man ready to insist otherwise, though. When you look up on instinct, Dustinâs chatter melts into a distant sound in your ears.
Steve Harrington is just as annoyingly handsome as you remember. Itâs like heâs stepped directly out of some cruel daydream you buried years ago: hair still perfect, though somehow more natural than before. Heâs cut back on the product, you think. And heâs broader now. A little tired around the eyes, but so real you can feel your heart stutter in your chest.
He scans the store in that way of hisâall lazy confidenceâbefore his eyes land on you and Dustin. For half a moment, you expect him to ignore you. You werenât exactly unforgettable in high school, not like he had been. Youâd been⌠adjacent to important, maybe. Close enough to notice everything and far enough to be nothing.
Youâre surprised when his eyes knit together in recognition.
âHey.â The greeting itself is a shock, let alone your name following it in a questioning tone. Hearing him say it was disarming in a way you arenât prepared for after two years. Your stomach does something unpleasant. âRight?â
âYeah,â you say, carefully neutral. âSteve. Hi.â
Dustin, oblivious to the inner turmoil youâre facing, bounces on his heels between the two of you when Steve approaches. âYou guys know each other?!â He exclaims, like his two worlds are currently being brought together.
Steve seems to blink himself out of his own stupor. âYeah, we, uh, yeah,â he answers eloquently. âHigh school.â
âWe had trig together,â you offer politely. As if youâre currently not on the verge of melting into a puddle of teenage hormones all over again.
âRight,â he affirms with a nod. âYou sat by the window. I remember, âcauseââ Steve drags a hand through his hair, and you swear your heart stops at the familiar gesture. The shape of his bicep under his shirt was one youâd memorised long ago. ââYou had those pens that changed colours. They were cool.â
Itâs something that seems so trivial, but the fact he remembers such a detail almost kills you on the spot. âUm, yeah,â you reply, too quiet to be normal. âThose.â
An awkward silence falls for a moment. Then Dustin claps loudly. âCool! Okay! Back to the mission. Steve, she has the parts I need. See? Right there! The thingy.â
âSignal amplifier,â you supply (though you doubt Steve âThe Hairâ Harrington has any idea what that is.) You reach for it, adding it to the bundle of cables on the counter.
Steve is too busy watching you with unmistakable curiosity to care about the name. âYou work here?â
âUnfortunately. Pays better than the diner, though.â
He laughs. Itâs more like a snort, you think. God, even his laugh still does that to you. Makes your stomach churn and your legs feel weak in a juvenile sort of way. You force yourself to ring up the part to distract yourself from the way heâs still looking at you like heâs trying to put the pieces together again.
âThatâll be seventeen dollars.â
$17.30, actually, but you donât have the heart to correct yourself when the wrong price slips out. Youâre embarrassed enough in this situation.
Dustin turns to Steve expectantly. âYou owe me from the arcade.â
âUh, yeah. Not seventeen dollars, dude,â he retorts. You bite your lip to keep yourself from laughing when he reaches obediently into his pocket for his wallet anyways. He counts out the cash and drops it on the counter and you have to feign normalcy when your fingers brush to hand him the receipt.
âSo,â Steve says after a pause. âYou still live in Hawkins, then?â
âUnfortunately,â you echo again. Your tongue feels heavy in your mouth.
He smiles at that. Genuine and easy and far too charming for your own good. âYeah,â he says. âSame.â The pause feels a little less awkward this time. Then he asks, âYou doing okay?â
It takes you a second to get over the initial shock at him being genuinely interested in your well-being. Probably just polite conversation, you tell yourself. Heâs always been like that.
âYeah,â you lie. âYou?â You know the answer. Itâs no secret he hadn't been accepted into college.
He shrugs a shoulder. âGetting there.â
Dustin chooses that moment to gather the ridiculously long cable and dumps the armful into Steveâs arms. âCarry these.â
Steve sends you a pitiful look but accepts them anyway. âWell, nice seeing you.â
âYeah. You too,â you reply lamely as Dustin ushers him off towards the door.
âSee you around, Radio Queen!â Dustin shoots over his shoulder with a peace sign. Despite yourself, you laugh under your breath.
The RadioShack feels agonisingly empty after the pair of them leave. Thereâs a hollowness to your chest where the warmth had been a minute ago. Youâre so melodramatic, you realise with a groan, forehead thumping against the counter.
Itâs just Steve. Stupidly handsome Steve that youâd been in love with for two years. Youâre an adult now. Sort of. Completely over him.
You reach sullenly into your pocket to drop the last thirty cents for Dustinâs purchases into the register.
Youâre so fucked.
â
Now, if someone had told you that Steve Harrington would re-enter your life twice in one week, you would assume you had done something in a past life to deserve this torture. Which is why you donât even consider the possibility of seeing him any time soon as you pull open the glass door to Family Video five days later.
Itâs a bit miserable to be spending your Friday night looking for a movie to watch alone, but itâs not as if anyone but Keith is around to witness your monthly ritual. You wander towards the horror aisle immediatelyâitâs less busy back here (not that thereâs many people here after 10pm) and youâve learned over the years that they shelve the good stuff back here where the parents wonât complain.
You skim the spines slowly. Youâve watched most of these movies already, but for whatever reason, you gravitate towards a copy of The Thing. Itâs better than standing around for an hour trying to pick something out.
When you turn the corner, you walk directly into a firm, vested chest.
âOh. Shit, sorry, Iââ You start, already stepping back. But two strong hands come up immediately to catch your shoulders before you can stumble backwards into a rotating rack of VHS tapes.
âItâs cool, itâs cool.â
Thereâs that familiar voice again. You freeze for a second, then your brain (very slowly) follows the sound upward. Youâre met with quite the sight: striped tee, green Family Video vest, and that perfect, stupid hair.
Steve Harrington. Again
âOh,â you squeakâactually squeak, like a startled mouse. Brilliant. âSorry. Wasnât looking.â
He blinks at you like it takes him a moment to pin your face again, then breaks into a smile so immediate you almost swoon. âHey!â He says, like he hasnât spent the last few days living rent-free in your head. âWhat are the odds?â
Apparently very bad ones, you think faintly.
âCrazy,â you agree mildly. âYou⌠work here?â You gesture weakly towards his vest like itâs not already blatantly obvious. You wish the floor would open up and swallow you right now.
He glances down at himself like heâd forgotten he was wearing it, too. âYeah. Yeah, I just started, actually. My friend Robin and I got hired together.â
Of course they had. You swallow. âNice. Thatâs⌠nice. This place is nice.â
Arenât you just doing so well? He shifts his weight, hands still loosely on your arms before he realises he never actually let you go. When he finally does, he squeezes your arms apologetically in a way that makes your brain short-circuit.
âSo,â he says, awkward but soft. âYou looking for something specific?â
âA movie,â you answer instantly, like you donât already have The Thing held behind your back. âJust⌠something dumb and loud. Had a long shift.â
Steve beams like he understands exactly what you mean. âWell,â he says, motioning with exaggerated seriousness like he wants you to follow him, âyouâve come to the right place.â You watch as he starts off, and then without thinking, you follow. You grimace at your shamelessness and slide the copy of The Thing into one of the shelves as you pass.
Steve gestures towards one of the displays. âIf you want âdumb and loud,â thatâs kind of my entire personality in movie form. Anything from here has been personally approved by yours truly.â
You huff out a laugh and pretend to inspect the display. âWow. You take this seriously.â
âAlways,â he agrees solemnly.Â
You reach for a random case, barely bothering to read the title. âDo you always walk customers around, or am I a special case?â
The worlds slip out before you have the chance to think better of it. Your face burns instantly, clearing your throat and looking down at the case in your hands. God, are you flirting with him right now? Embarrassing. All because heâs doing his job.
The silence that follows makes you want to bolt for the door before he recovers and says brightly, âGuess you are.â
Ah. Heâs humouring you, you think. Somehow that makes it worse. Suddenly, the carpet beneath you seems incredibly interesting. âSo,â you continue quickly, holding up the tape like itâs a shield because youâre suddenly aware of how uncomfortably close he is right now. âYou like working here?â
He shrugs. âItâs alright. Beats scooping ice for a bunch of thirteen-year-old girls.â
âHigh praise.â
Steve chuckles softly at that. Your brain traitorously tucks that sound away for later. âRadioShack doesnât seem too thrilling either.â
Your face twists in displeasure. âI might lose my mind if I have to explain why thereâs different types of batteries one more time.â
âWell, I just carry the cables,â he says. âWe all have our burdens.â
You laugh fully this time. The way he watches you like it matters makes the sound die down in your throat.
âHarrington! Youâre not getting paid to flirt!â A voice rings out from the counter.
Heat crawls up your spine. Steve turns an embarrassing shade of red. âItâs notâ!â He starts, then gives up on yelling back and rubs at the back of his neck. âSorry.â
You shake your head quickly. âNo, no, itâs fineââ
âSteve,â another voice calls from further down the aisle. âDo you know where the returns are supposed to go?â
He groans under his breath. âI gotta go be useful.â
You nod even though your chest is currently doing something complicated and entirely inconvenient. âYeah. Sure,â you force out.
Silence lingers, which only makes that odd feeling in your ribcage worse. Then he clears his throat. âYou can always swing by again. If you, you know, want recommendations or⌠whatever.â
Your heart kicks against your ribs. âI mean,â you reply lightly, glancing down at the case in your hands. Fast Times at Ridgemont High, you finally process. âI donât even know if youâve earned my trust yet, Harrington.â
Challenge sparks behind his brown eyes. âOh, youâll see. Youâll be back here next Friday for something just as good.â
You smile despite yourself. Then you turn towards the counter before he has the chance to see just how much that stupid look affects you. As you check out, Robin slides your tape across the counter with a knowing look.
âSo,â she drawls. âSteveâs friend?â
You clear your throat. âHardly.â
âMmhm,â she hums disbelievingly.
You grab your bag and bolt before she can say anything else. And when you finally push outside into the cold Hawkins air, you press your back to the glass door and stare up at the dark sky.
Yeah. Youâre not over him. Not even close.
â
You donât watch the movie that night. Canât bring yourself to, mostly because you spent the next hour driving around town and trying not to scream into the dead of the night. Itâs just Steve. Not like he plagued most of your daydreams for the entirety of junior and senior year. Heâs just some stupid boy whoâs growing into a young man.
But the following nightâŚ
Well, the movie isnât what you expected. You sit cross-legged on your bed after your shift, uniform discarded for something softer, the flicker of your TV painting the walls of your room blue and gold as you sit enraptured.
Youâd told Steve you wanted âdumb and loud.â
This isnât just that. Itâs funny, sureâbut thereâs something else there too. Something strangely familiar. You hadnât expected to like it so much, given youâd arrived intending to spend the night huddled under the covers to a horror movie.
And then thereâs Brad. At first, you hadnât thought anything of him. Heâs not the main character, after all. Just some guy who wants to be taken seriously. Wants to grow up faster than he knows how. Wants more than he knows how to ask for.
Somewhere halfway through the movie, you realise youâre not really watching anymore. Youâre thinking about Steve.
Brad, with his secondhand confidence, carrying the world on his shoulders and pretending everything is fine. Stupidly, it reminds you of him, in some dramatic and cinematic sort of way that makes you feel a little ridiculous. But you hug your knees to your chest and stare as the credits start to roll anyways.
Steveâs not at all how he presented himself back in high school. The King. The Hair. Whatever other idiotic nicknames a bunch of teens came up with for a boy that was so charismatic everyone couldnât help but be drawn to him.
You canât believe he remembered where you sat in trig class. The same guy who had sat two rows away, leaning back in his chair and pretending not to care about the diagrams on the blackboard as Tommy nudged and muttered something crude in his ear. You remember stealing glances when he laughed too loud. When he ran his hand through his hair like he did the other day and your breath had hitched like it used to.
Youâd been stupid about it back then. Painfully obvious in your own head and completely invisible everywhere else.Â
Your eyes drift to the clock. 11:24. Family Video is still open.
You nearly laugh at yourself. You are not going back there just to tell Steve Harrington you liked his movie pick. You are definitely not getting off your bed. You are absolutely not changing into jeans and grabbing your jacket.
And you are very much not locking your front door five minutes later.
â
He might not even be working. The thought crosses your mind as you drive into town, surrounded by the eerie silence of a sleeping Hawkins. Regardless, you choose not to turn around.
When you arrive, the lights inside are dim. Close to closing time. You catch a glimpse of Keith sweeping the floor with an expression that suggests heâd rather be anywhere else, and you linger near the entrance longer than you mean to.
Eventually, the bell chimes when you finally push through the door. Robin looks up first and her smile is immediate.
âOh my god,â she says. âYou came back.â
You flush, fishing the case out of your pocket like itâs a valid explanation to show up before midnight. âI just⌠was already driving through town. Wanted to bring this back so I couldââ
Steve pops up from the returns cart, and the lie dies on your tongue. You shift awkwardly from foot to foot before he breaks into a grin. âTold you she would,â he says triumphantly. The thought of them discussing you in your one-day absence makes your stomach churn.
âI watched it.â You try to sound neutral. You fail miserably.
His eyes light up. âYeah?â
âYeah.â You wave the case awkwardly. âI liked it. It was⌠good.â
Steve straightens, interest genuinely bright on his stupidly gorgeous face. âOkay, but like⌠good-good, or are you just being nice?â
You hesitate, then shrug. âGood-good. Bradâs kind of⌠sad.â
He makes a face like youâve personally offended him. âIn a cool way, though?â
â... Sure,â you indulge with a laugh.
Keith appears from one of the aisles, making a motion with his hand that says letâs wrap this up as he heads for storage. Steve clears his throat and straightens up as you hand the movie back over. âSo⌠next Friday?â
The question is entirely casual. The way he looks at you, on the other hand, is not. You pretend to consider it, even though the answer echoes yes, yes, yes in your bones. âWell,â you say slowly, tilting your head. âI guess you get one more chance to impress me. You know, just in case that was a fluke.â
He laughs, pleased. âDeal.â
Robin slaps the counter and you startle. âLeave her alone with your sucky movies and come help me close up,â she says, earning a reluctant groan from him.
âSorry. Sheâs got attachment issues. Canât do anything without me there to hold her handââ
âCan too!â She protests.
You smile weakly. âItâs okay. Iâll see you around.â
The two of them are too busy bickering to really hear your answer as you back away with your heart leaping out of your throat. You canât believe you just wasted gas money to return a movie at midnight. But despite your embarrassment, you feel slightly giddy as you reach the door and hear Robin call after you:
âBye, Steveâs friend!â
â
Steveâs friend.
You replay it stupidly in your head over the next week, even though you know Robin meant nothing by it. Still. Friend. It echoes where it probably shouldnât. Your giddiness from that night twists into something more confused: less thrill, more fear.
Youâve only seen him three times and youâre already overthinking yourself into oblivion.
What is Robin to him? Surely sheâs âSteveâs friend.â She wouldnât be so comfortable waggling her eyebrows after you if they were a thing. But maybe thatâs some sales tactic. Pretty boy lures in the customers and his girlfriend plays up the amused coworker role.
No. No, youâre being utterly ridiculous. Deep down you know that, but the doubt gnaws at you anyways. Itâs like watching Steve in the halls with Nancy Wheeler all over again when you think about the way theyâd bickered as you left the store.Â
Either way, Friday comes both too quickly and not at all fast enough.
You donât mean to go back to Family Video after all those thoughts swimming about in your head. Not really. But you find yourself standing in front of your mirror after work, fixing your hair for no practical reason. You try on three different outfits before settling on the one that looks like you didnât try at all. You hate the part of you that hopes heâs happy to see you. By the time you get in your car, youâve convinced yourself itâs for the movie.
Definitely not the boy.
Steve is restocking when you walk in. The universe doesnât bother playing tricks this timeâyou spot him immediately, bent over to slip cases from a plastic bin back into the shelves. The vest heâs wearing is too small in the shoulders, drawn taut over the muscle beneath. You feel your mouth go dry.
He looks up and catches a glimpse of you, and his face lights up. Actually lights up, like heâs genuinely glad youâre here to brighten an otherwise dull night of restocking shelves and counting cash at the register.
âHey,â he greets, a little too quickly. âYou came.â
Your stomach flips traitorously. âI said I would,â you remind him, tugging awkwardly on your sleeve. You feel stupid now. Overdressed, even if youâd spent half an hour trying to look the exact opposite.Â
He scratches the back of his neck. âI mean⌠yeah. I justâyeah. Itâs cool that youâre here. Anyways, Iâve been thinking about tonightâs selection.â
Thinking about it. Thinking about you. Thatâs not what he said, but your weak, pathetic heart takes it and runs with it anyways.
âYou⌠have?â
He freezes for half a second, like heâs been caught admitting something wildly embarrassing. Itâs endearing. Nothing like the suave Steve Harrington you once swooned over in the halls. His ears turn pink, and you resolutely try not to stare at them to avoid making that hopeful thing in your chest flutter dangerously.
âNot in, like, a creepy way. I told you I took my job seriously.â
Your heart almost sinks, but the way his eyes crinkle softly at the edges makes you realise heâs deflecting. You look down to hide a smile, rocking on your heels. âRight. Totally professional. What have you got for me, then?â
He gestures for you to follow him, and just like last time, you trail along behind without even thinking about it. Itâs becoming something of a habit. Apparently youâre still that lost puppy from high school pining for attention.
He leads you past the âNew Releasesâ display and into one of the aisles near the back. Steve stops, scanning the shelf like heâs picking out something special, then plucks out a tape with a satisfied little aha!Â
âThis one,â he announces, holding it up for your perusal. âItâs kind of old. And not really funny or loud. So if you hate me for talking up my funny taste, I can pick something else.â
You take it from him. Brief Encounter. Your brows knit together. âIâve never seen this one.â
âYeah. Nobody our age really has,â he shrugs.
âWhatâs it about?â
âTwo married people that meet and then spend the rest of their lives remembering it,â he supplies. You almost tell him he looks cute when heâs nervous about explaining a movie like this.
âYou trying to make me cry, Harrington?â
Steve laughs, dragging a hand over his face. âNo. Itâs a good movie. But if youâre sensitive, maybe I should put you on to Star Wars instead.â
You roll your eyes. âDo I get to ask why you chose it?â
âI donât know,â he lies poorly. âJust seemed like your sort of thing.â
You donât call him out on that. Just let him walk you back to the counter to ring you up, heart aflutter in your chest.
Later that night, the movie ends up wrecking you. You donât move for the entire runtime, your back against your headboard and your knees pulled to your chest. Youâve never been in a physical fight but youâre pretty sure this is what it feels like to get punched in the sternum over and over again.
You donât even realise youâre crying until a tear lands on your sleeve and leaves a darker mark behind. You blink it away, embarrassed at the display even in an empty room.
God, Steve.
â
âIâm mad at you. Youâre awful,â you accuse the next time you get the chance to swing by, sliding the case across the counter.
He blinks at you, alarmed. âWait, what?â
âThat movie ruined me,â you continue, tapping the case emphatically. âSo sad. I didnât know what to do with myself after.â
Relief flashes through him so fast it almost makes you laugh. âOh,â he breathes out. âOh, okay. I can work with that.â
You shake your head at him in exaggerated disappointment. You choose not to acknowledge how comfortable youâre becoming with him during these brief interactions. âIt was beautiful. And horrible. And unfair.â
âWhatâs your takeaway from it?â He prompts, resting his elbows on the counter.
âThat the world is awful? Life is meaningless? Happiness is impossible?â
He fixes you with a deadpan look. Your shoulders slump with a sigh. âI donât know. Whatâs yours?â
âSometimes things are better when they donât last?â He suggests.
You almost ask if he feels that way about Nancy Wheeler. You have to swallow back the inappropriate thought, averting your eyes to the case. âTch. Pessimistic.â
âIâm kidding. It makes me cry,â he admits with a laugh. Your eyes dart up, and he shrugs off the surprised look on your face. âDonât tell anyone I said that, okay? Especially not Henderson. Little shit thinks Iâm invincible. Iâd never hear the end of it if he learned I hadââ He makes a disgusted face. ââEmotions.â
You snort before you can stop yourself. âYeah, right. God forbid the former king of Hawkins High experiences feelings for the first time.â
Steve grimaces like heâs embarrassed by that title. âHey,â he protests indignantly. âI have always had feelings. I just happen to keep them hidden.â
âBehind the hair?â You suggest innocently.
âBehind the charm,â he corrects.
You roll your eyes, but the corner of your mouth keeps tugging upwards into a faint smile anyway. God, itâs unfair how easy this is all becoming. Youâve spent years carefully packing Steve Harrington away in your minds under the label things we donât think about anymore just for him to waltz back into your life and unpack it himself.
You rest your hip against the counter, folding your arms and pretending like youâre not trying too hard to appear casual. âCharm, my ass. Youâre not charming anyone by recommending movies like that.â
âI didnât know itâd hit you like that,â he says, hands raised in surrender. âI figured youâd think it was boring.â
âSo either I cry my eyes out or Iâm bored out of my mind?â
âFor the record,â he says, earnest, âthatâs not usually the goal.â
âLiar. I think you just enjoy watching your customers suffer.â
He snorts. âOnly a little.â A beat passes, then he reaches for the tape and slides it into the returns bin. âIâm kind of glad you hated it, though.â
That takes you aback slightly. âThatâs rude.â
âI meanââ He rushes, then stops, thinking better of it. âNo. Iâm glad you felt something. People usually just⌠watch stuff. You actually watch it.â Youâre not really sure what that means. Before you get the chance to reply, he barrels on with a rueful laugh. âActually, most people donât even bother watching stuff. Iâve recommended that movie to, like, two girls since I started working here. Theyâve both just pretended to watch it to try to get into my pants.â
Ironic. You actually did watch it to get into his pants. Guilt stirs in your chest.
âThat sucks,â you say, scuffing your foot against the carpet.
âOccupational hazard of being stupidly handsome,â he replies lightly.
âAs if you donât love it,â you shoot back.
âI donât,â he insists, softer. Itâs enough to give you pause. You glance down at your hands on the counter.
âSo I get points for actually sitting through that sad bullshit, then?â
âHuge points,â he affirms instantly. âGold star. Youâre my customer of the month.â
You laugh despite the way it feels like thereâs a hand squeezing your heart. Itâs a strange thing, being lumped into the same category as these two girls when youâd spent most of high school being a ghost in the background of his life. And yet now youâre standing here in front of him, and heâs looking at you like youâre not just another bored kid killing time with the hot cashier.
Itâs not until youâre home in bed that night, covers tucked up to your chin and staring dreamily at your ceiling, that you clock his intentions. Wait, was that a test? Did Steve Harrington just recommend you a movie to test how superficial you were being with him? And did you actually pass?
You roll over, smothering your giddy laugh into your pillow. Gold star. Hell yeah, you passed it.
â
The next few weeks you settle into a routine. You must be renting at least two movies per week by now (though Dustin single-handedly covers the cost of most of them every time he pops into RadioShack), each carefully selected by Steve. Heâd been ecstatic to learn about your affinity for scary movies, and youâve moved on from his favourite action movies to the horror genre.
Last week was Carrie and The Exorcist, the former of which you didnât have the heart to tell him was already one of your favourites. What he doesnât know wonât hurt him. You havenât had the chance to swing by for your next selection. One of your co-workers, Jeff, has called out sick the entire week, leaving you to pick up shifts left right and centre.
You pretend you donât miss him. You also pretend not to be disappointed that him accompanying Dustin was a one time thing. Apparently, you manifest the boy into existence when a hat and a curly head of hair appears in front of you.
âRadio Queen,â he greets with a solemn nod.
âHenderson,â you greet just as solemnly. âWhat can I do for you?â
âNeed batteries,â he announces immediately, slapping a couple of crumpled bills down on the counter like heâs in a high-stakes poker game instead of a small electronics store. âAnd⌠wire. And maybe one of those weird plug things Mike said Iâd probably forget.â
You arch an eyebrow. âThat narrows it down tremendously.â
Dustin beams toothily. âI know. Iâm great at instructions.â
You turn and start the shelves. Youâre used to translating Dustin Henderson into something functional. âDid he actually send you with a list this time, or am I going in blind again?â
Dustin fishes a folded piece of paper out of his pocket. âList.â Miracles do happen. You take it from him, eyes skimming over the unmistakable scrawl. You canât count how many times theyâve had a Party meeting and Dustin has been sent on a shopping spree with an illegible list of items.
âWow,â you mutter, squinting at the numbers in the margin and the title IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE. âHeâs getting organised.â
âOnly when the fate of the world is involved,â he replies seriously.
You snort indulgently. âOf course.â
You gather the parts in practiced silence, Dustin trailing closely behind you like a duckling. When you finally return to the counter to begin ringing everything up, he leans forward conspiratorially.
âSo,â he starts, dragging the word out. âYou and Steve, huh?â
You freeze for a moment, then resume your work. âWhat about me and Steve?â
He shrugs like itâs obvious. âYouâre always at the store. He wonât stop talking about you when we hang out.â Then, as an afterthoughtâ âNot in a weird way. In a normal way. I think.â
Your heart stutters in your chest and you forget for a moment youâre supposed to be punching numbers into the register. âHe⌠talks about me?â
Dustin rolls his eyes. âYeah. Heâll be like âDustin, if she doesnât like scary movies as much as I thought, then Iâm bad at my job.â And then Iâll be like, âSteve, nobody cares this much about their job,â and then he gets all quiet and weird.â
You busy yourself with pretending to double check the list so he canât see your face. âRight,â you mutter. âSounds exhausting.â
âFor him,â he agrees readily. âFor you, probably flattering.â
You shoot him a look. He just grins. You slide his change across the counter, still avoiding his eyes. âAnyone ever tell you youâre annoying?â
âIâm right,â he corrects, stuffing the bills into his pocket.
âOut,â you say, pointing towards the door.
Dustin laughs giddily, like this entire interaction has proved something he thought he already knew, and gathers his bag to swing over his shoulder. The bell jingles after him when he leaves, and the shop feels emptier for it. Too quiet. You busy yourself with reorganising a row of batteries that are already perfectly organised just to keep your brain from drifting back to that one awful, wonderful revelation:
Steve Harrington talks about you.
â
You donât make it to Family Video for another four days. Not because you donât want to, obviously. Life has apparently decided youâre not allowed to have nice, simple routines anymore. But Jeff finally returns to work looking suspiciously healthy, your manager immediately dumps all his shifts back on him like you never existed, and suddenly itâs Thursday and youâve gone an entire week without seeing Steveâs stupid face.
Which is fine. Youâre fine. Totally normal amount of fine.
So when you finally push open the glass door to the store that night with the bell chiming sharply overhead, youâre already bracing yourself for the familiar warmth of seeing him behind the counter. You donât get it. Instead, itâs Robin, leaning against the register with a pen in her mouth and her eyebrows furrowed as she studies a piece of paper.
âOh,â you say in disappointment before you can stop yourself.
She looks up and brightens instantly. âSteveâs friend! Youâre alive.â
âI should hope so,â you reply uncertainly.
She grins and hops off the counter. âWeâve missed your face around here. Better than looking at Keith all the time.â
You hear a faint hey! of protest from the back, and she drops her head sheepishly. You give a weak little laugh. â... Is Steve not here?â
Oops. There it is, out in the open with no subtlety whatsoever. Robinâs smile flickers into something mischievous and knowing.
âAh,â she says, like sheâs solved the mystery. âYouâre here for him.â
You feel your face flush. âNo. I just⌠Iâm used to him picking stuff out.â
âMhm.â She nods like sheâs listening to a lie she finds very entertaining. âTragic news for you then. Heâs off tonight.â
Your chest dips in dismay in a way you immediately resent. âOh. Right. Thatâs okay.â
Robin studies you for half a second, then gasps dramatically. âWait. Wait. I can fix this!â
âThat feels threatening,â you squint warily at her.
âNo, no,â she assures you cheerfully, already walking around the counter. âItâs fate. Destiny.â Then she points at you. âYou are now invited.â
âTo..?â
âMovie night!â She declares. âTomorrow. Weâre all going.â
All is a very suspicious word. âAll who?â
Robin claps her hands together. âMe, Steve, and Vickie.â
âOh,â you say lightly. Vickie. Youâve overheard Steve ribbing Robin about someone with that name a few times over the last few weeks. It sounds familiar, though you canât quite pinpoint her face just yet. âLike a group thing.â
âYeah!â Robin nods enthusiastically. âA very normal, very platonic, very not-at-all nerve-wracking group thing.â
That earns a smile from you, weak as it is. âSounds fun.â
âOh, it will be,â she assures you. âWhich is why you should be there.â
âI donât know,â you say, tugging on your sleeves. âIâve got work, and Iâll probably be tired, andââ Robinâs deadpan stare silences you, and you bite out a sigh. âYeah. Okay, sure. Movie night.â
â
Apparently, movie night consists of carpooling, too. Which means youâre sitting in Steve Harringtonâs passenger seat with Robin and Vickie in the backseat. As it turns out, you did recognise her name. A year below you in high school, if you remember correctly.Â
Sheâs prettier than you expected.
Which feels cruel to think, but you think it anyway. Vickie is all soft curls and easy smiles, leaning forward between the seats as Steve fiddles with the radio. She laughs at something Robin says, this bright and unguarded sound, the kind of laugh that makes you immediately understand why theyâd like her.
You sink a little further into your seat and pretend you are extremely invested in the streetlights flickering past the windows. To make matters worse, you have to endure thirty minutes of trying to fit in with them on the drive over. After the closure of Starcourt, the next theatre is two towns away.
âSo,â Steve says from the front seat. âEveryone emotionally prepared to have their minds blown?â
Robin scoffs. âPlease. Aliens is not âmind-blowing.ââ
âIt has Sigourney Weaver with a flamethrower. Thatâs kind of mind-blowing,â Vickie chips in.
Steve points at her through the rearview mirror. âThank you. Case closed.â
You canât help but smile. That same crooked little smile sneaks onto Steveâs face when he catches the expression on your face. Youâre both startled out of it by the radio finally working, though itâs crackling through busted speakers. He groans.
âEvery time. It either does this or plays gospel,â he mutters, reaching to change it again.
âMaybe itâs a sign,â Robin laments dramatically. âRepent now because weâre all going to die tonight.â
âYou are going to die first for making me wait for twenty minutes outside your house,â Steve shoots back.
You let the sound of them wash over you. Itâs a little strange to see Steve like this. Not polished and posturing like you grew up with. Just some guy driving too fast down a dark road with his friends piled into his car and the radio blasting a distorted version of Girls on Film.
You wonderâstupidlyâif it ever couldâve been this easy with you back then. In another timeline. Another version of Hawkins. Another you.
Before you can dwell on it too long, the theatre blooms into view through the windshield as you roll into the carpark. The marquee reads: ALIENS - 8:45 PM.
Inside, the air is warm and smells like butter. Steve insists on buying popcorn âbecause movie integrity,â which starts another round of arguing between him and Robin until you slip him a couple dollars and he goes quiet in the cutest, most mortifying way possible.
You end up seated near the aisle with Steve beside you and Robin seated with Vickie behind you. You can hear them whispering and giggling amongst themselves when Steve sends you a reassuring smile, like this totally isnât weird at all.
The movie is intense. In a good way, obviously. Though itâs hard to focus on anything but the way Steveâs arm is pressed against yours on the armrest between you. Itâs just physics, though: narrow seats in a cheap theatre. Still, youâre acutely aware of how close you are in a way that has nothing to do with ergonomics.
By the time the credits roll, your nerves feel like theyâve been wrung out and hung up to dry. Not because the movie was scaryâthough admittedly you jumped a few timesâbut because god Steve Harrington smells so good up close.
Robin stretches her arms out in the row behind you as the lights come on. âOkay, whatever. I guess it was mind-blowing.â
âKnew it,â Steve says smugly as you rise to your feet. You pretend not to feel it everywhere when his hand skims your lower back as he ushers you out of the aisle.
âIâm never going to sleep again,â Vickie groans.
âGreat. Weâve officially broken her.â
Outside, the night is cold and quiet. When the four of you pile back into the car, still buzzing from the movie, it feels easier this time. Youâre less daunted by the conversations overlapping and brave enough to interject here and there, much to Steveâs obviously pleasure. Itâs hard not to notice the way he laughs a little too loud.
Vickie gets dropped off first. Steve pulls up to the curb in front of a neat little house with a glowing porch light. She hesitates before getting out, turning back toward Robin with a soft, hopeful look. âI had fun tonight,â she says.
Robinâs voice almost cracks. âYeah. Me too.â
Itâs painfully obvious and somehow very sweet. You busy yourself with adjusting your seatbelt so you donât have to watch the interaction too closely. Itâs none of your business, but putting the pieces together makes you feel lighter. Robin and Vickie. Not Vickie and Steve.
Robin is next. Steve pulls up in front of her place, and she gives Steve a look thatâs the furthest thing from discreet. âAlright. Drive safe, dingus,â she says, punching his shoulder. Before she swings out of the car, she pauses in the open doorway to give you a little smile. âIâm glad you came by the way.â
âMe too.â You mean it when you say it.
Steve waits until she gets insideâgentleman that he isâbefore he pulls away from the curb. Your place isnât far from here, and youâre almost disappointed you get so little time alone with him.
Itâs a peaceful drive, however short it is. When he pulls up outside your place, you brace for him to say goodnight. He doesnât. He puts his car in park and shuts the radio off, angling himself towards you.
âSo,â he says, wearing that careful little half-smile heâs been wearing lately. If you thought his signature grin was disarming, this is even worse. You canât even think when he looks at you like this. âUh. Aliens verdict?â
âI loved it,â you affirm. âBetter than the first.â
âGood. Agreed. Iâd probably ban you from the store if you hated it.â
You both laugh before lapsing into silence. Itâs not awkward, you think, but you can still feel your skin crawl with anticipation. He watches you for a moment, thenâlike heâs decided somethingâhe shifts in his seat again.
âThis might be dumb,â he starts, and you raise an eyebrow. âProbably is dumb. Definitely is. But I canât believe youâre, like, here. With me. Hanging out.â
You blink at him, unsure how to take that. âUh⌠thanks?â
âNo. I mean, back in high school,â he continues, âI was kind of a dick. So I wouldnât really blame anyone who hates me now. I mean, half of them come into Family Video just to laugh that I ended up renting movies instead of going to college.â
Your heart twists sympathetically. âWell, itâs not like Iâm much better off. Battery salesman, remember?â
â... Yeah. Yeah, I guess thatâs true,â he laughs, dragging a hand through his hair. âLook, Iâm just trying to say Iâm glad youâre here. And that you havenât totally written me off just because I was a douche as a kid.â
You swallow around the sudden tight feeling in your throat. âYeah, well, youâre different now,â you say. Too simple, because explaining that youâre probably still in love with him is far too heavy. âIn a good way.â
âAm I, or did I just finally get enough bad luck that it knocked my head out of my ass?â
âProbably both,â you snort.Â
He huffs a laugh, then falls quiet again. After a moment, he says quietly, âI wish Iâd known you better back then.â
Your gaze drops to your bag to avoid seeing the soft earnestness in his eyes. âYeah. Me too.â
Steve shifts in his seat, like he doesnât quite know what to do with himself either. âWeâre⌠doing that now, though. Knowing each other. Right?â
You nod weakly. âYeah. I think we are.â
He smiles at that, and there it is againâsoft and unsure and nothing like the grin he used to wear in high school. Itâs a good look on him. âGood,â he says, like he means it. âIâd hate to think I missed my shot twice.â
Steve hesitates, his hand hovering near the gearshift like heâs about to bid you goodnight. Then he continues: âI had fun tonight. I mean, Iâve had fun this entire time. With the movies. Youâre fun.â
Your chest tightens, fingers curling nervously in your lap. âYeah?â You say, lifting your eyes to give him a sheepish little smile.
âYeah,â he agrees, firmer this time. He shifts closer again, just a little, until the space between you is smaller than it has any right to be. âIf Iâm reading this wrong, you can totally say no. I just really want toâŚâ His voice falters and he trails off, wetting his lips.
âYouâre not reading it wrong,â you blurt out.Â
His smile twitches slightly. âGood,â he says. And then his lips are on yours. Slow at first, as if heâs trying to gauge whether you want this just as much as he does. As if you havenât dreamt about this moment since you were sixteen. Your hand finds his arm, the other one drifting to rest on his chest. You can feel his heart rabbiting under your palm.
When you finally pull back, still breathing in each otherâs air, that crooked smile of his makes your heart flip all over again. âGet your ass inside before I do something even more stupid.â
You laugh breathlesslyâembarrassingly itâs more like a girlish little giggleâforehead still resting against his for far longer than necessary. âGoodnight, Steve,â you say, finally pulling back. You open the car door before you can lose your nerve and combust right there in his car. You make it all the way to your front steps before you hear it.
âHeyâ!â He shouts. âWait!â
When you turn around, Steve is half out of the car, one hand braced on the door and the other shoved awkwardly into his jacket pocket like he doesnât know what to do with it. âI wanna take you out,â he elaborates.âFor real. Not just a group movie thing and not sitting awkwardly in my car pretending weâre just people who recommend each other movies.â
Your mouth opens, then shuts promptly at the revelation. Steve Harrington wants to take you on a date. A grin blossoms in its stead. âAre you asking me out, Harrington?â
âYeah. Yeah, Iâm asking you out,â he laughs, just as breathless.Â
âWell, if it wasnât obvious by how many nights Iâve spent at a movie rental store, yeah. Yeah, I want to go out without you.â
You watch the nerves practically drain from his body, replaced by relief. âCool. Perfect. Thatâs great,â he says, then grimaces in embarrassment. âIâll⌠Iâll swing by tomorrow with the details, then. Give me tonight to plan something.â
The thought of Steve Harrington spending an entire night planning out a date makes you swoon all over again. âOkay,â you say, in a very failed attempt at playing it casual. âGoodnight, Steve.â
âGoodnight,â he parrots.
You give him a little wave, then head inside with your heart thudding loudly in your ears. You barely bother greeting your parents before bolting up the stairs, your thoughts echoing a very repetitive stream of: Oh my god he just kissed me. When you collapse onto the bed, you muffle a squeal into your pillow.
Itâs just a date, butâŚSteveâs girlfriend sounds a hell of a lot better than Steveâs friend.
