I love when romanceable videogame charas have a friendship version of the romance scenes.... i love you can eat cookies with sera in the roof and they are "inquisition cookies" instead of "us cookies"... i love that you can spend the night with gale telling him he doesnt need to sacrifice himself and he is like "fuck you for bringing me friends and adventures now i dont want to die" thats the good stuff... i love that if you don't do the romance you get different convers that add a lot to how the character acts with a good friend, instead of just "oh well you didn't date them so no special bonding for you in friendship either"

free is like. legitamately a rly good show like YES it is the gay swimming show & yes the gaybait is good and it wld be good if that was all it was. but its also uses the boys love to speak to some really unique and meaningful thingss about being In Sports that i think most sports anime dont rly have the desire to approach. free continuously asks what does it mean to compete? what does it cost to be the best? & simultaneously: why do you want to be the best? how do you become that? think its rly easy to brush off a lot of the characters in free as silly slash quirky but the character writing is quite strong and things like haru's obssessive fixation on the feeling of being in the water move towards asking things like is the love enough to sustain this for me? the fact that free is sports anime about swimming is rly conducive to asking these particular questions first bc swimming is a sport with a the clear delineation btwn person and team thus making the reason one swims, wants to be good at swimming, keeps swimming competitively a very individual pursuit and second because free is also ultimately a coming of age story and swimming despite ultimately being an individual sport it is also a very communal activity that people often start doing very young. so free is about the intersection between the fleeting passions of youth, the importance and value of friendship, the pressing anxiety of future and individual burden of choosing who you want to become. and it also my husband makoto tachibana is in it. no other anime has my husband makoto tachibana
