Set the Table for Imbolc
As we come upon the first of the Vernal Sabbats, we welcome the coming Spring, and honor the Goddess, Brigid now pregnant with new life. Setting out offerings, and putting together a festive meal is a splendid way to give thanks to the returning light, and life of Spring. After researching multiple reference sources, I’ve compiled a brief list of foods most commonly associated with Imbolc. The most referenced items were dairy products, specifically milk, butter, and eggs. Also referenced were baked goods such as braided bread (though all breads were noted in general), lemon poppy seed muffins, and scones. Dishes incorporating lamb were also popular. Less mentioned, though still being noted by several sources were blackberries, honey, and rice pudding. Below are links to a few recipes which I felt incorporated the essence of Imbolc.
Lamb Shank Pies
Blackberry sconesÂ
Braided Peasant Bread
Irish Soda BreadÂ
Rice Pudding
Honey ButterÂ
I hope these recipes offer inspiration for an Imbolc feast. Whether you decide on a delicious brunch, or a savory supper, remember to set out a plate for Brigid, and have fun!
Brightest Blessings
