people who are so vehemently against self-diagnosis need to remember that it is not all a black & white thing. it's not always "my doctor & medical papers say i have XYZ" vs "i say i have XYZ"! sometimes it's :
my doctor says i have XYZ but a professional diagnosis may put me in a compromising position.
my doctor agrees i likely have XYZ but i cannot afford the tests needed to properly be diagnosed.
i do not have access to doctors that diagnose XYZ.
XYZ runs in my family & i have all the symptoms, though i do not have access to a doctor to confirm this.
my doctor confirmed my suspicion that i have XYZ casually, but since it is not important to my current treatment i prefer to skip out on the paperwork & focus on my other issues.
my doctor undiagnosed me since a professional diagnosis put me in a compromising position, but i still do have XYZ.
XYZ can be replaced with both physical & mental ailments/disabilities/etc, too!
someone's diagnostic status is not your business. if they say they have a disability, have the respect not to poke & prod their medical history - believe us. disabled people know themselves better than you do. well-researched self diagnosis, professional diagnosis, "medically recognised" - whatever it is, their health is their business alone!
