Saturday morning, a few hundred men from the neo-Nazi group Patriot Front, four hundred by their own generous count, moved through Capitol Hill to drummers, in matching khakis and white masks, waving Confederate flags beside upside-down American ones and chanting about driving immigrants out of the country.

Every single face covered. On the birthday of the country they claim to own.

Know who these men are. Patriot Front is the remnant that crawled out of Charlottesville, founded by a then-teenager named Thomas Rousseau when the last group imploded after a neo-Nazi murdered Heather Heyer.

Their entire act is costume theater: show up unannounced, march for their own cameras, inflate the headcount, then scatter into Metro cars and rented U-Hauls before anyone can respond.

The one time they planned something real, in Idaho in 2022, police pulled 31 of them out of a single U-Haul, packed like cargo, and charged them with conspiracy to riot.

They once lost a federal lawsuit over defacing Arthur Ashe's mural because they were too cowardly to show up in court. That is who was under the masks.

Here is what the government of the United States had to say about hundreds of uniformed men calling for ethnic cleansing outside the Capitol: "First Amendment activities."

No arrests. A reporter asked a National Guard soldier who they were and got one word back: protesters.

On Wednesday, it took Capitol Police only minutes to handcuff an Air Force major on those same steps for calling for Trump's impeachment. The men in the masks got waved through.

And then they ran. That's the act's final beat, every time. Flags rolled up, drums packed, back onto the trains they came in on, gone before the holiday crowds even thickened. Men who came to reclaim a nation and could not show it their faces.

By nightfall the Mall was full of the actual country: hundreds of thousands of Americans of every color and origin, watching the fireworks those men had already fled.

She didn't twist his words. Johnson said it on camera, off-script, to his own people at the Faith and Freedom Coalition summit in Washington, the same room Trump would address hours later.

"Half of you in this room will be targeted," he warned the donors, if Democrats take back the House. Impeachment wasn't even the real concern, he said. The concern was investigations into Trump's family, his cabinet, his donors, his friends.

Then he reassured them. He runs the protection program. He'll take care of them.

Ocasio-Cortez heard exactly what that was. A protection racket, she said, with congressional oversight rebranded as a partisan witch hunt so Trump's donors never have to answer for anything.

The phrase Johnson reached for gives it away. Protection program is the language of witness protection and protection rackets, of operations that only stay standing as long as nobody opens the books. A sitting Speaker used it on video to describe his own job.

What he's really selling that room, AOC said, is a class of impunity. Commit whatever crime you want. As long as the check clears, you're covered. She called it a model of extortion, and she said that was the entire pitch.

Everyone who wasn't in that ballroom lives under the other system. A home health aide who fumbles a tax form gets a letter from the IRS. A nineteen-year-old caught with a joint gets a record that trails him for a decade. A billionaire who buys enough access gets the Speaker of the House promising, on video, to keep the committees off his back.

Two sets of rules. One for the people who can pay, one for the rest of us. Johnson didn't hide it. He ran on it.

Republicans hold the House by six seats. That margin is the only thing between Trump's donors and a subpoena, which is why Johnson is selling protection instead of doing his job.

You don't build a protection program for people who did nothing wrong. You build one when you already know what the daylight would show.

When you're this desperate to be needed, you post "CALL ME!" at 12:14 in the morning.

That's exactly what the President of the United States did. After a violent weekend in Chicago, Trump took to Truth Social in the dead of night and pleaded with Governor JB Pritzker for a chance to ride in and fix it. "Governor Pritzker, I, as President, can fix this, FAST and Permanently," he wrote. "D.C., Memphis, New Orleans, all down to record lows, and quickly! CALL ME!"

He did not call.

Instead, Pritzker stood in front of cameras and calmly dismantled the idea that this president is competent to manage anything, let alone his state. "This is the president that thought that he could hire an unqualified company to paint the Reflecting Pool," Pritzker said, "and then thought that it would just be free of algae."

Then he kept going. "This is the same president that did not know that the Strait of Hormuz could be closed if he went to war with Iran. I don't think that we should be listening to this president, or that he has any idea how to protect us in the state of Illinois."

It is a devastating point, because it is true.

This is a man whose signature beautification project, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, turned bright green within days because he handed the job to an unqualified contractor.

A man who started a war with Iran and was apparently surprised when Iran threatened the world's most important oil chokepoint in response.

And now he wants the keys to policing an American city, promising he can fix it "fast and permanently."

What Pritzker understands, and what Trump cannot, is that "CALL ME!" is not a plan.

Sending in federal agents or the National Guard over the objections of a state's elected governor is not crime policy. It is a photo op, the same instinct that produced a green pool and a Strait of Hormuz he didn't see coming.

There is something revealing in the timing, too. A midnight post in all caps, demanding to be phoned back.

This is a president who governs by attention, who needs the spotlight more than he needs the outcome, reduced to begging a governor on social media at the hour when only insomniacs and the truly rattled are awake.

Pritzker isn't calling. And a midnight "CALL ME!" from the man who turned the pool green is not an offer of help. It's a cry for attention.
