The Last Night I Loved You
I often imagine the day you find
the last of the long stranded
strands of my hair in your house.
You will have been sweeping me
from the floor for weeks,
washing me from the bedsheets
on the days your soul decides
to take a break from turning inside out,
and just when all that remains
seems to be solitary dust bunnies and
the lingering scent of distant perfume spritzes,
one single hair on the shirt I wore
the last night I loved you
sneaks up and crawls down like a spider
spinning its web down your nose.
I hope there is something in you
that will always want to open.
I said these words to you as I held
your heart in my hands, handing it back to you.
Your skin was on mine in a final attempt
to say everything that I always wanted to hear,
to write the letters you’d never send,
to make sure you left me knowing
the things you knew I still knew the whole time.
I had never seen you as open
as you were at the close,
and I have never loved you more
than in the moments I realized
I could love you no longer.
