As astronomers continue to try and understand the universe a little better, the MeerKAT radio telescope, currently being built in the Karoo, recently produced its first image.

The image from a test observation done with the only four functional MeerKAT dishes thus far, has shown more than 50 galaxies in the small patch of sky it projected.

I spoke to the Square Kilometre Array South Africa (SKA SA) Chief Scientist, Dr Fernando Camilo.

Camilo explained the significance of these tester images.

South Africa is currently going through the worst drought in years and many inland towns are badly affected by a scarcity of this precious resource. The water crisis in Kroonstad has reached a critical state. The town's water supplies are nearly depleted and the town’s water experts say it is only a matter of time until the taps run dry. Residents are complaining that the situation is so bad, they cannot use lavatories, cook or bath. Businesses have also been affected. OFM journalists, Mark Steenbok and I, recently spoke to the locals in the town. This is our report on the situation.

The Bloemhoek Dam, which is one of the dams that supplies the area with water, is nearly at 0%.
