Any Thoughts on Evangelion characters in the Manga compared to their Anime counterparts?
YES!! I will begin though by saying I have not yet finished the manga. I think I got up to volume 7 before losing my place? I still need to finish it— I’d like to.
Shinji in the manga versus the anime is really interesting to me. Though it’s been a while, I seem to recall him being more prickly, perhaps not mean? but definitely not like. nice. LMAO. Whereas in the anime though he has his moments, he tends to be more sheepish for lack of a better word. I could be misremembering but I’m pretty sure Shinji attempts to punch his father In the manga. I think both Shinji counterparts and their differences work great for the differing stories of the manga and the anime and it’s hard to say which I like more.
I do not really recall any major glaring differences between anime and manga for Asuka and Rei? Maybe Asuka in the manga seeming a little more playful and therefore a little younger than she acts in the anime? It’s difficult to think of examples though, so perhaps I’m crazy. I have vague memory of her with a claw machine game and I think she is so cutesit. I think her and Hikari’s friendship in the manga is very sweet as well. Again, my memory is hazy, so it’s possible that I am getting some of their scenes mixed up between the main manga and the spin-offs, which I’ve read a couple of stray volumes of- Angel Days and the Shinji Ikari Raising Project specifically I think I have the first volumes to.
I think Toji is so sweet and endearing in both the manga and the anime. I think he might somehow be sweeter in the manga at times? Though I really do not care for his blond hair. Sadamoto’s color changes for Toji really do not work for me. His design in the anime is far better. Him and Hikari are very sweet in both though of course his manga ending is much more tragic!!!
Obviously there are some pretty major differences when it comes to Kaworu. I deeply adore both iterations. Of all the Kaworus, I think I like his depictions in the manga and anime best;; though I do find his game iterations so very very delightful. I’ve not finished the rebuilds but I do think Qworu is the weakest of his designs visually. He is so spiky. Jarring! His bob in the manga endears me and I think his fluffed up fly away hair in the anime suits him very well as someone not quite human and otherworldly. I really like the theory (?) that Kaworu is timelooping and “Karl” as I’ve seen him referred to for the manga iteration is his first loop. He is so strange and off putting it’s his first time being human and he is so silly to me. I forgive him for the cat if I’m being honest.
