And Aang is just never, ever shown paying that back. At all. Hell, past the first episode he doesn't even acknowledge that Katara is the last Waterbender of her tribe after a century of systematic kidnapping and attacks.

Katara mentions her mother being murdered? Wow, sucks, he says. Katara is wrestling with what to do about her mother's killer? You better do what I think is right or you're morally wrong. There are now two scenes, one when he was twelve and in the third season, and now in his twenties in the movie, yelling at Katara that she cannot possibly understand what HE is going through as the ONLY SURVIVOR OF A GENOCIDE. Jesus fuck the person who hears Katara's full narration of all but basically witnessing her mother burn alive is Zuko, not Aang. Aang in TSR didn't give a fuck about sitting with her grief, only that she had the right response to it -- according to his metrics. (Which he has repeatedly failed through-out the show lmao).

And Bryke barely cares too. The comics, movie, and LOK, have all shown that Katara's number one priority after the end of the war was caring for Aang. Not her tribe and rebuilding it; or even in re-establishing water bending in her tribe. She goes back to the tribe and there's already water benders there anyway, it hardly matters that she traveled across the entire planet just to learn bending. What matters is Aang and his big feelings. When Katara is empathizing with Korra about her trauma in Season 3 of LOK, she points to Aang having had a problem once too -- not idk, her own trauma and experiences? Their mutual heritage as part of a tribe that has survived genocide??? Nope. Aang. It's like they forget that there was more than once genocide in the show that they wrote. And even if they do remember? Then the Air Nomad genocide is the most important and bad one, ergo it takes precedence.

Yet, just once I want this interaction:

Aang: You don't understand! Katara: Oh? I don't understand?

I wouldn't be so mad about Katara wearing that yellow ribbon in the movie if Aang had literally any blue anywhere in his character design. No, the arrows don't fucking count. In fact, if you look at the released concept art, what you find is that: Katara's designs always have the yellow ribbon and absolutely zero of Aang's designs have anything blue. Which meant, that before sitting down to draw they decided Katara would be wearing yellow and either did not think, or did not want, Aang to wear blue. It feels exactly what it looks like: Aang's claim on Katara and yet, Katara does not have a mutual claim on Aang? It's like one person in a couple wearing the wedding ring while the other one simply doesn't.

And it wouldn't piss me off so much anyway if we did not also have scene of Aang showing disgust or disdain for water tribe culture (he doesn't like their foods and he has some smart remarks about 'furs' on the wall). Combined with him preaching and enforcing his morality onto Katara in TSR and that they had not already segregated their fucking children in LOK.

Kya, Tenzin, and Bumi, are all mixed race children. You would not know that just looking at them because Kya and Tenzin are basically cloned from their same gender parents. Which is also coincidentally coinciding with their bending style. Bumi was apparently a god damn orphan for all his design has to do with anything. At no point does Tenzin's Water Tribe heritage come into play into his story. At no point does Kya's Air Nomad heritage come into play into his story. In fact, what is actively implied instead is that Aang ignored teaching his non-airbending children Air Nomad culture and outright favored Tenzin, beyond just teaching him Air Nomad stuff. They went on special field trips.

Bryke has tried to sweep this up saying that Kya and Bumi were not 'interested' in it, which makes it sound more like Aang was preaching to them than teaching based on what we've seen in the show in regards to how he acts about all this. But like, this is a mixed culture household. Tenzin should have been spending time in the Southern Water Tribe; Kya should have been spending time on Air temple Island; and Bumi between both. They would have interacted with and been influenced by both their parents. Why doesn't Tenzin air bend like a water bender? Why doesn't Bumi know how to meditate? Or air bending forms? Why does Kya know nothing about her father's culture? Especially when apart of the idea of Republic City in LOK is all of the cultures and peoples blending together, then surely the main mixed culture and race couple of the show wouldn't have segregated their children.

So what it comes off as is Aang is above Katara's lesser, icky meat eating, animal hunting, material culture. He was uninterested in his non-airbending kids, neglected and ignored them, and never made any compromises when it came to the meeting place of his culture with hers. He wouldn't even wear a scrap of blue fabric to symbolize his relationship with her, like she would for him.

And it's like. Man I hate thinking and realizing all these things about Aang, these are terrible character traits.

The concept art does show that in the early production there were ideas that Katara would be pregnant during the movie. I saw several Kataang fans go "WOE IS US WE WERE DENIED CUTE PREGNANT KATAANG!!!"

And like, are you brain dead.

What you want is: Katara, obviously and visibly pregnant, forcibly side lined for the entirety of an action movie, incapable of fighting or participating in the plot in anyway besides providing emotional support to Aang? All so that way you could maybe get a cute cuddly pregnancy picture? All the cool fight scenes we got in the movie with Katara? Her active involvement? Would be completely nixed if she was pregnant. And we're not talking first trimester either, she is obviously late term in the concept art. Furthermore, Aang's actions in the movie would become incomprehensible, stupid, and selfish, if he was actively endangering himself, his wife, and his unborn child with how he was acting. He is already acting that way in the movie but at least it doesn't borderline on full on dead beat dad before the child is even born!

(And I also just want to say: Katara's main function is not to be an incubator for the next generation of Air Nomads. Having her being visibly pregnant with what may or may not be an Air Bending child would have 100% changed the vibes here. Like, if the plot is about the next 'air nation' and what that will look like, Aang's potential heir being in the womb incubator of his wife would have to be apart of the conversation. I do not want a plot like that and you should not want a plot like that).

Furthermore, also consider this. At no point in the production did anyone ever apparently consider that Toph could be pregnant too.

What, you ask? Why would Toph be pregnant?

Well, Toph had two daughters who are around the same age as Katara and Aang's children. I'm sure you could parse the timeline but if it's about the time that Katara is having children... It is also about the time that Toph is having children. So, why was it never considered that Toph might be pregnant during the movie?

Because what? It's Toph? Gravid with babies is not how we visualize her? Toph gets to be an action hero and have cool fight scenes. Katara emotionally supports her husband and is considered for pregnancy. Why is that? What does it say about our (and the perception of the writer's) view of women, that we can imagine Katara pregnant but not Toph? Even though we know both of them, canonically, were pregnant and had children? Why is Katara considered for depictions as eight months pregnant but not Toph?

And then Jack dies.

It's a freak accident, but it puts Maddie WAY more on the anti-ghost defensive, so he sure as shit can't be doing any dramatic ghost half confessions now. Despite bad interactions in the past, Maddie ends up leaning on Vlad for comfort and somewhat expecting him to take up something like a parental role with Danny and Jazz—there's no romance, just the fact that he's there and should be helping now that Jack is gone.

Meanwhile, Danny immediately suspects Vlad had something to do with the accident and will hear no defenses. He makes it his life's mission to prove it was Vlad's fault because he just can't believe it was random circumstance. Jazz isn't sure what to believe but is too focused on keeping her mom and brother somewhat sane to be of any help to Vlad.

Background: for board game night, the subject of DND comes up and Vaggie reveals that she was kind of a nerd while she was alive. She’s a bit self conscious about it but?? Charlie has heard her talk about it before and has wanted to play for ages but they haven’t had a group of people to play with. In a way it’s genius because. Dnd is basically an ultimate team bonding exercise; there’s a lot of empathy and problem solving involved…Vaggie is convinced to give a crash course on the rules, prints out a couple of character sheets, and the rest of the hotel (as per first character creations usually go) basically create themselves as their characters 💀.

Campaign summary: the world is set in a high fantasy adjacent of hell, where Charlie is dead broke and has 0 means raising money for a hotel to redeem the sinners of this realm. With the rest of her party, they set off from avernus (the top ring of the nine hells of Baator ) to Nessus (the deepest ring), where Lucifer has isolated himself within a securely guarded fortress. She intends to ask him to get an audience with heaven to plead her cause.
