hi this is mono and welcome to my anime corner. i talk about anime that i watch and post art that i will occasionally do.

One aspect of Chrollo's character that I think goes underappreciated a lot of the time is his sense of humor. His playful side. His enjoyment of the bizarre and chaotic.
Or at least, I havenβt seen fans talk about it much in discussions about him. Which is a bit of a shame imo, since it adds such nice nuance to his character and further disproves the "just an edgy aloof gothguy/he's so boring and emotionless" allegations. (Probably gonna tackle the "boring because he's emotionless" part further sometime. Because it's so blatantly untrue like what are you even on about with that?)
We see clear instances of Chrollo having a sense of mischief (albeit at times sadistic and cruel) throughout the manga.
His initial evident fondness for Hisoka is a good example of this, as well as the very first we get. Part of said fondness is probably due to Chrollo being fascinated with Hisoka's psyche, but he's also just plain amused by the clown's antics (until he isn't) and is content to let him run around and do his own thing (until he isn't)
Another instance of Chrollo's appreciation for eccentric shit is found in this panel
The man canonically reads (and evidently enjoys) Bo-Bobo. Which (from what the Internet tells me) is a surreal action comedy manga, known for its absurd and chaotic humor. It seems like a riot, tbh. Might have to check it out for myself hah
I love that Chrollo isn't some literature snob, but will happily read things like this in his downtime and not just books in the veins of, idk, King James Bible, Nietzsche's collected writings or Crime and Punishment. It adds to his appeal :) β‘ a sense of humor (in addition to not being a highbrow prick) is one of the most attractive traits a person can have, after all.
Speaking of sense of humor, Chrollo appreciates a good karmic joke, as seen here when he realizes that Hisoka's ass is now at the receiving end of it
He laughs even in the face of his own shitty situation. Which I think is quite telling of Chrollo's character. Chrollo is not the stonefaced 24/7 brooding edgelord he's sometimes accused of being.
I mean we've got a panel like this to show the exact opposite of a humorless (or emotionless for that matter) man
Crucially, Chrollo is completely alone here. He's not playing a part, or putting up a façade. He's authentically silly (and channeling his younger self a bit).
I headcanon that this is the type of guy Chrollo would have grown up to be had trauma and his giving his soul and self to the Spider not happened. He'd be openly expressive, not ashamed to be goofy or overall emotional. An endearing, friendly and approachable guy.
(We also have this scene of a playful Chrollo from the '99 anime. It's technically not canon but I'm including it anyway because it's cute... in a fucked up/manipulative way)
Anyway, back to canon timeline and a moment that can be interpreted as playful in a creepy way.
It's hard to tell though, but to me Chrollo's demeanor in his meeting with 'Assassin A' is indicative of him feeling some (dark) amusement and playfulness, or at least of being in the mood for some "fun".
In addition to being silly/weird on occassion, Chrollo can be a cocky/cheeky lil shit to his elders

Chrollo also seems to enjoy messing with and annoying his friends on occasion.
Like in this scene, where he provokes an already riled up Nobunaga
(Nobunaga also says in an earlier chapter that Chrollo has tricked him more than once. Likely it's often been for tactical reasons β such as when he secretly sends Paku and Phinks to tail Nobu and Machi β but since Chrollo does have a mischievous streak, it wouldnβt surprise me if he's done it for some shits and giggles as well on occasion, similar to in the above).
The topic of Chrollo liking to provoke others does inevitably lead ones thoughts to the infamous car scene with Kurapika, where Chrollo takes rage-baiting to some truly sick and messed up levels. It's impossible to say whether all of it was just pure cold calculated manipulation tactics by Chrollo, or if he actually got some additional cruel enjoyment out of taunting and riling the young man up. He does smirk and smile an awful lot throughout, but then he's a consummate actor, so idk if it was from genuine amusement/satisfaction or not. I'm personally leaning towards Chrollo getting some entertainment out of it like the sick fuck he can be. (Additionally Kurapika did just (no matter how justifiably) kill one of Chrollo's loved ones, so it's not far fetched that the latter would hold some resentment toward the Kurta and consequently feel at least a level of satisfaction at getting back at him this way.) Regardless, I'm including it as an instance of cruel and sadistic (if tactical) mischief.
I also personally believe the "I didn't think the chain dude would be a woman" moment was Chrollo being sarcastic rather than actually serious. As in, I think he called Kurapika's bluff.
Idk it just doesnβt fit Chrollo's known character to be surprised that the chain user would be a woman. Like why would he be? He's got women in his Troupe (one of whom can canonically beat his ass in arm wrestling), he knows they're capable and strong, and he also knows that women as well as men can be driven to kill for vengeance (Paku and Machi are right there). God knows the man's got massive moral failings, but he's just too smart for misogyny (and racism, or any prejudice really) to be among them. Or that's my feeling djdhd.
And lastly, to wrap up the post, I have to include this little scene of disrespect and 0 fucks so blatantly given by Chrollo. It's genuinely one of the funniest moments in the manga imo

All the man wants is to infodump abilities and then get this over with so he can go rob some royals.
Anyway, Chrollo is a complex and layered guy, as opposed to the boring emotionless edgy gothman with no depth or character that he's at times accused of being. He has a sense of humor, a fondness for the weird and absurd, can be cocky and disrespectful toward his elders, and possesses a silly as well as mischievous side to his character. These traits are interesting as well as important to his characterization, and I just wanted to highlight them since I havenβt seen it done very often.

I really want Chrollo and Morena to interact. There was a panel that showed dogman detecting a strong specialist (and it was chrollo) in the crowd. I know they find borksen but I still want chrollo and Morena to interact
I've noticed that Chrollo acts a little like his real self when he's not around his group.
He's sulking alone on the lowest tier of the ship. A poor man in that tier points out that chrollo looks awful--like he wants to kill somebody, & chollo snaps out of his gloomy thoughts and asks "really?" That "really?" Is shocking to him because he's good at masking his feelings. He's good at putting up a villain appearance so when he's all alone and knows nobody from the troupe is around, he lets himself be vulnerable for once. That inner vulnerability reflects on his face as a result, and other strangers could see it.
And when he's conversing with Neon at the Auction hall's waiting lounge, he lets his tears roll down his cheeks after reading the fortune. This is something he'd never do infront of the troupe. Then he proceeds to ask her about the afterlife. That question had nothing to do with his mission. He was just curious about her perspective on the dead. Maybe he needed some sort of reassurance, but her answer doesn't satisfy him much and he goes back to being the villain he is. You don't see Chrollo having this kind of interaction with the troupe. It's always 2 or 3 words, an order, a plan and then he hops out.
So I'm curious to see how an interaction between chrollo and Morena would go. She's in a horrible mental state just like chrollo. She's twisted, broken, and harbors hatred for the world the same way chrollo does. Except, chrollo doesn't want to burn the whole world. He still cares for his meteor city people. Morena, however, doesn't care about anyone. She holds no loyalty to any one. She clings to no identity. She has nothing to lose.
A conversation between these two would be so interesting.
no fr tho especially with the connection that "this is what the troupe used to be like" so it would literally be a passing of the torch so to speak if they did meet. cuz lets be honest chrollo's on his last legs, he's run out of things to fight for and he's making bad decision after bad decision that will inevitably lead to his downfall.
but enter morena, a new contender in the space of avenging the nameless people with fresh fire and a setup that is a renewed version of what he had made.
he'd probably be impressed by what she's built and obviously see how much damage it can do. but hey. that's not really his fuckin problem is it.
if not chrollo i at least need feitan to meet morena. cuz if there's someone who would probably relate to morena more than chrollo it's feitan. XD

tamsy's next move is to either team up with zodyl or help zodyl create the next encounter with the cleaners.
or possibly even recruit zodyl to the cleaners cuz that works too
so right now the cleaners have 5/6 watchman pieces in their possession. the only piece theyre missing is the coat.
we dont know if there is a power heirarchy with the items but the coat definitely seems obscenely powerful on a physical scale.
but maybe through goading on tamsys part or by that previous assessment or simply by throwing the raiders at the watchman series (eg. throw jabber at rudo again), zodyl has a very real shot at getting all the watchman pieces. not even counting if tamsy puts up the watchman book as collateral.
it makes sense logistically and characteristically for zodyl. i dont know if it really ties into this "new idea" that tamsy had from rudo's first job.
this works especially if bundus was there to witness all of that. at this moment no one knows enjin has the watch. only gountess and rudo had noticed something strange had happened but they dont and probably wont know it was enjin.
however. introduce mystery third party (bundus) on top of the idea that momoa still has a months worth of information from kuro. and suddenly zodyl knows the location of all 6 pieces of the watchman series.
wild thought.

but this scene. i was talking with a friend and they had asked if the sounds were coming out of the choker
and i had a thought
what if they were
like gountess connected to rudo and everything he said or thought was coming through to rudo over the special choker.
so
what if the beeping was also coming through. creating this distorted feedback loop.
most likely not because rudo was then holding the necklace and gountess' power doesn't work without it.
but still a sickening thought
lily's speech is hard to understand but i think i finally get it
she was willingly keeping herself in the dark and playing dumb so gountess would never be required to tell mymo about her.
the way mymo's control over gountess was to tell him everything he hears over the chokers.
by lily never saying what she knew and also vocally behaving ignorant to everything going on, it's likely she flew under the radar for this long.
she remained silent and purposely ignorant to avoid mymo's suspicion of her.
she is able to then save gountess at the very last second simply because she knew where he was and that he was in danger.
if you reduce the act to "she teleported him away" and "she made the heart in his body keep working" that's not harming anyone or "interfering" with anyone.
it's manipulating objects and a body, which we know she can freely do. she can teleport people wherever she wants because that doesn't directly harm or change them. she can change the state of objects or summon entirely new ones, something that doesn't harm anyone.
the speech has nothing to do with the "chain" she mentions because i believe her condition has always been "if anyone is *ever* harmed, she will die"
just because she doesn't know someone will be harmed doesn't mean the condition doesn't apply, therefore i don't think that's what she meant by ignorance.
in summary: she couldn't save gountess before because that would reveal she knew something and would therefore have been mymo's next target. she chose to save him at the last possible second right as the bomb detonates because she can only control bodies and objects. if she had teleported gountess any sooner, the bomb would have travelled with him.
