They both disregard how oppression actually works by grouping marginalized people in with their oppressors, making marginalized people capable of systematic oppression, and rewriting very basic relational positions of power.

For example: logic that renders non-ace lesbians capable of oppressing heteromantic ace men.

And they both end up pathologizing sexuality that is already heavily stigmatized.

For example: when someone says “ew, allos!” they’re not just saying “ew, heteronormative sexual attraction!”, they’re also saying “ew, lesbian sexuality!”- something that society already has covered, thanks.

They also have a weird way of warping identities, which ends up revealing even more twisted, bigoted logic.

For example: Stating ace lesbians don’t ‘count’ as monosexuals. This implies that either ace lesbians aren’t ‘real’ lesbians, or that non-ace lesbians are ‘oppressive’ because they experience sexual attraction to women. Either option is gross and lesbophobic. And of course, the people making these statements are never lesbians themselves.

So monosexuality defines people who are sexually attracted to only one gender (i.e. gay, lesbian and straight people). Mononormativity is the normalization of that….the normalization of being attracted to only one gender…so much so that any deviation from that (i.e. bisexuality) is considered abnormal and abhorrent.

The term comes from the often used term heteronormativity. And as I mentioned before, heteronormativity really includes mononormativity.
