I watched this documentary in my very first sociology class ever. It was really eye opening, especially as a white woman. And I can’t say i got it all then, I’m still learning now. One of the other white men in that room (he doesn’t speak in this clip) says up front “i’m a racist, and i’m working on that.” And when I listened to him throughout the film, I thought “no you aren’t, you’re listening to these people and trying to be fair and equal.” It took me some time to realize that even though he was actively trying to promote positive relations, he was still racist, simply by way of his privilege and upbringing in our society, which helped me realize that within myself (painfully). It took longer to say to myself “i’m racist, and i’m working on that.”
