So my sister's been working out to get within the Air Force height/weight standards. She recently feels as if she's hit a plateau after some months and asked me to help her figure it out. She's been doing run of the mill weights and cardio and eating generally nutritious.
Last night, I planned out for her a quick and dirty bodyweight exercise: warm-up with jump rope, 10 pushups with an isometric hold, Supermans, and an AMRAP 10 of squat jumps and Russian twists. Full body, no equipment save the jump rope. Different.
I'm up with her too as I had to walk the dog, so I made her a breakfast of cheese omelet, sauteed spinach, and oatmeal.
She texts me on her way back talking about she's embarrassed because she only did 2 of the pushups. And I was like "who else knew you had to attempt 10 other than me?" she was like "I did and I didn't do it".
And so I loved her up, left the breakfast spread as a surprise, and now I don't know whether to be fucking mad at this culture of... focusing on failure or at the military for their dated height/weight standards or at myself for being too hard.
Off bat, I don't think I was too hard. She's been bossing her regiment and trimming up like a fitness model, so I knew she needed something different. The purpose wasn't for it to be easy, you know what I mean, because if it was easy she wouldn't grow. When she's about to do those 10 isometric pushups, she's gonna blaze the Air Force fitness test.
But I don't want her to feel like shit about it because I CAN'T help her get past that mental block, you know, no one can. That's a hard lesson to learn and it's completely a solo journey. And I'm so mad about that because it's one thing for me to have to do it but... smh, it's hard to witness.
The difference is in the sight, right? I've already been through this ringer: tried, failed, tried again, failed again, gave up and stopped, all that shit. So I have an idea of how things will work. She doesn't and she's not supposed to, that's that "growth with experience" shit.
The only thing I pray for is that she stays the course because I know she can do it. I figure I'll have to get my night owl ass up and do the exercises with her one morning, show her that I'mma be dying too but we'll both be stronger on the other side, that it's doable even when it sucks.
I'm mad at myself for not thinking of that last night. I should've been her partner.
