๐ The morning had started with little sighs.
Then the tiny huffs every time mama asked babygirl to do something as simple as drink a little water or pick a favourite outfit for the day.
The blue socks were "wrong."
The cereal was "too crunchy."
The blanket wasn't her favourite.
Even the cartoons that usually made babygirl giggle couldn't chase away the grumpiness that had settled over her from the moment she'd woken up.
Mama never raised her voice. She knew mornings like this happened sometimes.
She checked babygirl's nappy, making sure it was clean and comfortable, rubbed a little lotion onto her skin and helped her into a fresh, soft nappy decorated with little stars, bubba's, before pulling on comfy shorts.
"There we go," mama smiled warmly. "All fresh."
Babygirl only crossed her arms with a dramatic little "Hm."
"Oh dear," she teased softly. "Someone's forgotten how to smile today."
That earned another grumpy huff.
The morning carried on much the same until lunchtime.
Mama asked bubba to help put one toy back into the basket before they ate.
"Just one toy, sweetheart."
Mama knelt so they were eye to eye.
"I know you're having a hard morning darling, but shouting isn't kind."
Babygirl's tiny frustrations finally bubbled over, she stomped her feet, she threw a bunny across the room.
Then another toy followed.
Tears spilled down her cheeks as she cried and kicked at the carpet, unable to find the words for everything she was feeling.
Mama waited until the toys stopped flying.
Another loud cry answered her.
"I love you very much, but throwing toys isn't safe."
Babygirl buried her face in her hands.
"I know you're upset, baby"
"So it's time for a little timeout to help your body calm down."
Babygirl's eyes grew wide.
"I'm afraid so, sweetheart."
Mama gently took her hand and led her to the little timeout cushion in the corner of the living room.
There were no angry words, no lectures, just a quiet reminder.
"You'll stay here for three minutes. When the timer is finished, we'll have a cuddle and talk about what happened, darling."
Babygirl sat with her arms folded dramatically.
She pouted, she sniffled.
Every now and then she looked over to see if mama was watching.
Mama was nearby, folding laundry quietly, giving babygirl the space to calm her busy emotions while still letting her know she wasn't alone.
The timer finally chimed. Before mama could even stand, babygirl's lip wobbled.
"I didn't like timeout mummy..."
Mama opened her arms. Babygirl hurried across the room and practically melted into the hug.
Mama kissed the top of her head.
"Thank you for apologising, bubba"
"I was... really grumpy."
A tiny giggle escaped between sniffles.
"Everyone has hard mornings sometimes. Even grown-ups."
Babygirl nodded against her shoulder.
"But throwing toys isn't okay, sweetheart."
"What could we do instead next time?"
Babygirl thought very hard.
Mama smiled and kissed bubba's forehead.
"That sounds like a wonderful idea."
"I think that's another excellent idea."
Mama reached into the little basket beside the sofa and handed over babygirl's favourite pacifier.
The familiar comfort immediately helped her shoulders relax.
She sucked quietly while mama stroked her hair.
"How about one more nappy check before lunch?"
Bubba gave a sleepy nod around her pacifier.
Mama guided bubba to the nursery, laid her gently on the changing mat and found that the nappy needed changing again.
"Oh good thing we checked, sweet girl."
Babygirl stayed still this time, watching the little mobile spin overhead while mama cleaned her carefully, added fresh powder and lotion and taped on another soft diaper.
Mama gave the waistband a playful little pat.
Babygirl reached up with tiny grabby hands.
Mama laughed softly and wrapped her arms around babygirl.
"I've got you, sweetheart."
Nestled safely against mama's shoulder, pacifier bobbing gently, babygirl finally let out the biggest yawn.
"Feeling a little better?"
"A little nap after lunch, perhaps?"
Mama kissed her forehead.
"I'm proud of you, sweet girl"
Babygirl blinked up at her.
"For saying sorry, mama?"
"For calming your body, using your words afterwards and remembering that even when you make mistakes..."
Mama squeezed her just a little tighter. "...you're always loved."
The last traces of the grumpy morning seemed to disappear.
Safe in mama's arms, wrapped in a fresh nappy, warm cuddles and the familiar comfort of her pacifier, babygirl finally felt small enough to let the difficult feelings drift away.
Sometimes even the biggest tantrums ended exactly where they needed to...
....Right back in mama's embrace. ๐
