âWhat do you mean the Sheriffâs daughter is coming to stay with us?â The Lord pinched the bridge of his nose. They already had a full household with their children, staff and flying arrowâs everywhere, taking in another meant worrying about yet another person getting hit by a stray arrow from target practicing in the courtyard. âWeâll need to create a new practice area away from the keep.â
âSomething youâve been looking for an excuse to do for months now; donât pretend otherwise.â She knew her husband wanted a new practice area; a bigger one. Where the kids could practice their skill and where he, and the other Merry Men, could show off. Prove to the âyounginsâ that they still had it. Whatever that âitâ was.
âWith Richard taking in Johnâs daughter, I thought we could extend an invitation to the Sheriffâs girl. Show her that we hold no ill will towards her and provide her with a home. A real home. Not some dorm room.â
The Prince sat looking at Marian, head quirked to the side in clear disinterest. Rehabilitation they were calling it. Now that the barrier had been lowered. The parents were only getting off the isle if Auradon deemed them fit for public. But that suggested John had done wrong in the first place, which he certainly hadnât done anything wrong. Taxes were a way of life, whether people like it or not - itâs like the old kook Yzma always said, they should have really thought about that before they became peasants. âYouâre neglecting to reach your point Marian.â
She knew that tone - had heard it multiple times during her teenage years, when Richard was gone and John ruled over England (esp Nottingham) with an iron fist. When he ruled over her as well. His men keeping close watch. Making sure she did not run afoul of the âwrong sortâ. But mostly keeping her from Robin. A man John had wrongly accused of crimes. Who he had made an outlaw for no reason other than his own petty...
She wasnât a teenager anymore. Wasnât a child. And though John was still her uncle, she no longer had to put up with that tone.
Not when she had come here to try and help. An act that had clearly been a mistake.
âStop it. We both know thatâs not true. My point is simple. If you want off the Isle, if you want a chance to see Eleanore again then you need to apologize. To Richard, to me, to Robin. And most importantly to the people of Nottingham. You have to admit that your greed got the better of you and you need to promise them you will change.â
âI am not that scary, thank you very much. âWrong side of my wifeâ; honestly, Rob...â

This was too weird, too strange. The sheriffâs daughter didnât know what to do or how to react. It wasnât normal for her for someone to be so determined they wanted her. Her brow creased a little. âI thought I was in Auradon because of a lottery decided by your overall King?â But the crux was, Skye was still scared of trusting and getting used to something that could be ripped away from her. Sheâd seen it in the past. Hell it was the same reason she kept Callum at arms length most of the time. For the minute she told him she loved him, heâd have the power to hurt her when he left.
A room for her? That made her frown to herself. They already had a room setup for her? She huffed to herself trying to make sense of it all. It was too much for her to handle. So she did the only thing she could think of - self sabotage. âAnd your husband and family agree to this? What if I told you I was sleeping with your son? Do you still want me living with you then? Do you still think Iâm worth having around?â Sheâd tried to push him away, tell herself it was easier that way. That eventually he would tire of her, or his parents wouldnât approve, or one of those pretty princesses flirting with him would finally turn his eye. In that end pushing him away had hurt too much. But if anything would tip the Lady in front of her, it would be that.
âTechnically, yes. But before the drawing, Ben sat down with Gwyn and the two discussed the situation. Discussed the concerns our people had, how things had gone at Auradon Prep following the first wave of Isle kids to come over...if Gwyn had told Ben at that time that Westerly didnât want anyone connected to certain people within its borders...well then your name would have been returned to the bowl...or whatever they pulled them from...and another chosen. Which, hopefully, helps to answer the question about my husband and family.â Robin, obviously, had had some concerns, but they both agreed Skye was not her father. And the sheriff, dogmatic as he was, had only been acting on the orders of Marianâs uncle.
John was the real problem. And he was still safely tucked on the Isle, so...
As for the girlâs other declaration -- Marian wouldnât pretend it hadnât shocked her. It had. But not for the reason Skye was probably thinking. âIâm going to go out on a limb and guess that your hypothetical question means you and Callum are together...at which point my main question would be why he thought he had to hide you, and that from us. And...are the two of you being safe?â Oh yes, Marian was THAT mom. And now Skye only had herself to blame.
âThaâs âcause ya know me so well,â Freddie chirped with a cheery grin. Sheâd always appreciated that her aunt offered a parental sort of authority in her life while also accepting Freddie for exactly who she was.
ââzactly wot âm sayinâ! Not thaâ we should break the rules all the time, but evâry now ân again wonâ hurt nothinâ.â She might be mischievous, but she wasnât entirely defiant.
Marian loved Winifred -- loved her every bit as much as her own children -- and whatever the blonde needed, sheâd be there.Â
âAll right,â She reached out to pull the younger girl in for a hug. âYou coming home with Gwyn this weekend? I know your dad would love to see you....â
âA growing boy like me? Iâm always hungry.â A growing boy. At six feet, five inches, Joseph was pretty sure he was done growing. âI could help you, if you like,â he offered.
Most boys would probably be embarrassed about doing âwomenâs work,â but Joey had learned long ago in the Merry Men that you pulled your weight however you could. Besides, cooking was a valuable life skill; everyone should learn how.
âDepends...did you inherit your fatherâs cooking skills.â Because Little John, unlike her husband. could actually cook. With Robin...the farther he stayed from the kitchen, the better. Though Marian was sure that Cook would prefer she kept to that as well. Not that the redhead was bad in the kitchen, just that...it was Cookâs domain.
But today was Cookâs day off and well....she was taking full advantage of it.

âIâve started to, yeah. Iâm not sure when Freddie took it, but it seems she had time enough to stow it in a tree further into the woods.â Joseph tried not to seem too concerned about it, because he didnât want to get the younger girl in trouble. That being saidâŚhe didnât love the idea of having the conversation with his father about having lost the staff.
âItâs alright, though, really,â he assured Marian. âIâm sure Iâll find it eventually. If not. . Well, I can always persuade Freddie to go and grab it for me.â
Theyâd grown up together, and he knew how to get her to do what he needed; not that heâd ever manipulate her, of course. But Joseph wasnât so principled that he was above bribing Fred.
If Little John had anything to say about the missing staff, Marian was more than happy to have Joey direct him to her. Nothing about the staffâs current location was Joeyâs fault and the redhead was no about to have him blamed for it. And maybe, just maybe, if Little John had a discussion with Winifred, it would...persuade her from doing such things in the future. (For as much as he was a giant teddy bear, Little John could be fairly intimidating when he wanted to be).Â
Then again, Marian wasnât holding her breath.
âGood.â As long as Joey could handle himself, she was satisfied. âYou hungry?â
âDo you want me to go?â Robin asked coyly, pulling Marian against him. The thrill of being caught was an intoxicating one; that and he just plain adored the woman in his arms. His hand found the column of her neck to guide yet another kiss to his lips.
âRun away with me Marian? Come with me?â the outlaw begged. Once upon a time, has Richard still been here, him and Marian would have been wed by now before the eyes of their King and god. âFriar Tuck can marry us and then no one can keep us apart.â
âOf course not.â If Marian had her way, Robin would never leave her side. Richard would be home, John would be gone, and the man she loved would no longer be an outlaw -- his lands and his titles restored. Then together they could begin rebuilding Nottingham, helping their people recover from all John and the Sheriff put them through.
But she couldnât have her way. Not right now, at least. And as much as she wanted to -- as much as she would give anything to follow Robin out the window and into the night -- she couldnât. âYou say that as if Uncle John wouldnât have you hunted down. As if he wouldnât order the Sheriff and his men kill you upon sight. Heâd drag me back, have the marriage annulled and then where would we be? I canât risk anything happening to you. If you were to be killed...it would destroy me. But, perhaps, I could sneak out tomorrow night. We could find Tuck then and...at least weâd be joined under God and in our souls.â
âNope. Not at all. âM completely innocent.â Oh, they both knew that was a lie. âOoooh, I wonâ turn all their hair grayâŚBut they might all âave a few of âem by the time âm done,â Freddie replied cheekily.
âKeep life interestinâ, though, dunnit?â
âI wouldnât expect any different.â If every member of the staff somehow managed to make it through the semester without any gray hair, then Marian would be worried. Because it meant her children (and the children of the Merry Men) were not in attendance.Â
âAnd youâre right about that; it does. A little rule breaking is good for the soul, after all.â Like when she used to sneak off to see Robin. Or he used to sneak in to see her.
âThereâs no shame in admitting you donât want me here.â She told her Lady in front of her, just in case she was trying to be polite about it all. âItâs not like even my own parents wanted me. Mum left before I could crawl and dad didnât care where I was as long as I didnât get in the way of his business transactions.â
Itâs more than she cared to admit to someone, but she needed Marian to know that she could handle being told to get lost; that she expected it. Especially from her fatherâs enemies.
Skye snorted; of course, thatâs why she was dumped in that college which Callum attended, and why she was forced to take remedial goodness classes.âBetter off without me there really.â she told Marian with a shrug as she finally brought the tea cup to her lips and she listened to the offer, tea cup pausing at her lips. Sheâs never had a home before; at least not one that she didnât actively avoid and then there was the whole Callum situation. She was fairly sure sheâd be kicked out if Robin and Marian ever found out.
âI told you, if we didnât want you here...if I didnât want you here, you wouldnât be. You are here specifically because we wanted you; wanted to give you a chance to do better than the Isle would allow.â To be better. The Sheriff was a hard man, yes. But Marian wouldnât call him evil. Not like some of the others. It did break her heart, though, to hear how Skye had been all but abandoned. No child should ever have to suffer feeling unloved.
âI mean every word Iâve said, Skye. We want you to come stay; thereâs a room set for you and everything...if youâll have it. We could even take a look at it now. See if thereâs anything you might like to add before school lets out and you use it in earnest. Transitioning from the Isle to Auradon is a huge thing -- and something I wonât even pretend to understand. But itâs not something anyone should go through alone. Let us help you. Be here for you.â
