Will Byers is a NERD. He likes science. He canonically knows how to speak morse code. He and the party participated and won science fairs and were part of the AV club. Will Byers is SO smart. He is SO wise. Will Byers has big opinions about his interests and can talk about them forever. Will Byers has favourite artists he looks up to and admires. Will Byers is a cinephile and an audiophile. Will Byers is a collector. Will Byers is SO strong and SO kind. Yeah.
This is my take, after doing my research for a fanfic I'm writing -and a season 5 rewrite- of how DnD on Stranger Things actually confirms Byler and Conformity Gate -sort of-.
Buckle up, this is a long one.
Alright, I've tried not to post a lot about Byler because once I start, I can't stop, but I just read something that made Stranger Things click for me. -And another reason why the finale is bullshit, and they did both Mike and Will dirty, shit, all of them dirty.-
In the show, they use the parallelism with DnD to indicate two things:
1. The nerdiness and the imagination of children (just for narrative purposes, DnD and imagination and being an outcast, nerd, etc., are ageless)
2. Understanding the Upside Down, naming the monsters, and explaining dynamics is a way for them as children to cope with a break in their reality and for us, as an audience, to connect better with the world-building.
I think that by linking those two things to DnD, they accidentally made Byler canon. And here's how.
So, Mike is a Paladin on DnD, we all know that. Will is a Cleric; we all know that too. And they are undoubtedly interlinked classes in the game. Paladins are like knights, with a few more layers of complexity, and Clerics are like wizard-sorcerer-healers. And their synergy works amazingly. I'm putting this in the most basic and superficial terms (If someone reading this is a DnD player, please forgive me if I reduce this way too much; the post would be eternal if I didn't.)
Here it is when I think the parallels or symbolism between DnD and Stranger Things went out of hand and ended up being a second narrative.
Just the same as the Upside Down monsters are linked to DnD monsters, Mike and Will are linked to a Paladin and a Cleric. They are parallel because, talking about narrative and storytelling, you can use their DnD personas to represent traits, flaws, personalities, wishes, and dreams they have as individuals. The pep talk Mike gave Holly, with all the 'Holly the Heroic' thing, is the blatant evidence of that. But that is not the breakthrough.
So yeah, the DnD character parallels the individual, so what?
Reading about Clerics and Paladins made me notice that the parallelism doesn't end there; it reflects their core character arcs, development, and evolution. And with it, the proper finale, the full closure, should have been Byler.
So let's talk about that. Paladins are knights who make an oath. An 'unbreakable' oath. This oath is the materialization of their will; it's the devotion to an ideal, to a cause, it's the ultimate manifestation of their conviction. And it is the fuel, the source, of their powers. The Paladin's Oath is sacred, which is what differentiates Paladins from other classes. Breaking their oath means losing strength, losing conviction, losing everything. Do you see where I'm going with this? This class is dictated by their own will, the congruence with their morals, beliefs, and words.
Mike, as himself, not his DnD reflection, did make an oath. An oath to Will. It was not even when they began playing, when they were kids. No. It was the moment he found out Will was missing; he made the oath to find him. When Will was back, it was an oath to protect him, and it was reinforced with what he said when they were trying to get the Mind Flyer out of him. He literally said the best decision he's ever made was to ask Will to be his friend, that memory, that certainty, being his conviction. It was what made him powerful enough to go against everything to find him, and then being so attentive and truly see Will when he was back, when he was silent, when things were normal but still dangerous. It was always Will, his oath to him, his conviction being him. And then season three came, and Mike broke his oath every single time. Mike literally emotionally lost Will, pushing him aside to be with Jane, pushing DnD aside, making fun of him for wanting to play, ignoring him, and acting like he was annoying him. And of course, the infamous "It's not my fault you don't like girls." Everything Mike did towards Will in season three was him breaking his oath. And so far, it seems obvious, but I found it so tragically beautiful how Mike's development after breaking his oath is literally, word by word, what happens to a Paladin in DnD when they break their oath.
Breaking the oath for Paladins is literally losing their magic, powers, or strength because they lose their conviction. If a Paladin not just deviates from the path of their oath but goes right against it, they can end up completely de-powered. And that is exactly what happened to Mike after season three. In season four, he was an asshole, a bad boyfriend, a bad friend, and completely clueless, I'd dare to say lost. And we all attribute it to "real life" adversities, internalized homophobia, fear of saying 'I love you', avoidance, all the things we all have pointed out and showed not as a writing mistake, but a growth opportunity. He lost all of his conviction; he lost his magic. And in season 5, it went worse; he had a few moments, yes, but his character couldn't be more on the sidelines. And his finale is the representation of losing all magic, spark, and power you once had. Mike's character arc was a literal visualization of a Paladin losing all his strength by breaking their oath.
And how does it connect to Byler? Here it is, the last straw for me to become an absolute radical Byler shipper.
A Paladin can seek absolution for their rupture, to restore their conviction and re-align their soul with the ideal. They can do that with a Cleric of the same faith. And who is Mike's Cleric?
And it doesn't end up there! The thing with Clerics is that, unlike Paladins, their powers come from their faith and devotion to a deity or concept/ideal. It's not internal; it's external. They lose their faith, they lose their powers, just like that. They do not generate their strength. And Will, just as Mike, lost his faith in season three.
And what was Will's faith?
Love.
He is a character full of pain, but full of love. And, in the first two seasons, it is what makes him pull through everything. His love for his family and friends kept him going, resisting in the Upside Down after being explicitly abused. Then, when he comes back, there are the constant reminders from his friends, family, and Mike that they care for him. They love him. Again, when they are getting the Mind flyer out of him, it's Mike's words of love that get him fully back. And I don't mean only in a romantic way. I mean all types of love.
And again, then season three happens. And there it goes: "I'm not gonna fall in love". All the reassurance he had completely vanished. Their friends are showing him they don't care, leaving him behind, the destruction of Castle Byers -it being the manifestation of Jonathan's love for him-. And the infamous "It's not my fault you don't like girls."
So what happens? The Cleric lost his faith, and it continued that way through all of season four. And it finally got to a breaking point in vol. 1 of season five with the Sorcerer episode. What awakens Will's powers? LOVE. It's copy-paste from DnD mechanics and dynamics; it's not even funny.
And right there is where the show had the road to the best character arc development, and they fumbled it with that shit of "Friends? No thanks, best friends." Because you know what?
The Paladin never sought the Cleric's guidance to restore his oath. Never searched for his conviction or absolution for him to restore his strength, to regain himself. And in the process, he ripped the Cleric's faith apart. Again.
They could have closed their inner dynamics, their parallelisms with DnD so beautifully, their character arcs and evolution, and ended up killing whatever was left of their own selves. They were structurally, fundamentally destined to be together. With the Duffers' writing level, I doubt this had ever crossed their minds, but it fits so perfectly it looks planned. The problem was not the Paladin breaking his oath and the Cleric losing his faith, but that they never became stronger after that. They made them lose all their powers, magic, and themselves, instead of making them learn, talk, and love. Not even romantically, it also applies platonically (but I, of course, believe it is romantic)

Byler was meant to be.
Losing their powers is losing the campaign. So if they lost the campaign, it could hint that the finale was, in fact, Vecna's manipulation. It's been three long years (Do you still want me?)
Chapter 14: If you received my letter.
I haven't posted about this chapter yet but it's almost byler day so here is an excerpt!
“I will never understand why you left Hawkins, Indiana for this,” Daniel, the son of the farmer who owns this place says between sips of beer. Mike raises his own bottle to his lips, still wincing at the taste, and shrugs.
Daniel just eyes him, in that way he often does where it looks like he can see right through you. Maybe he can. He’s a few years older than Mike, wise and worn in a way that only early mornings of back breaking work can instill. He must see something different in Mike tonight, sitting in the barn on scratchy bales of hay like they always do in the evenings. Because usually when Mike shrugs in response to that particular question, Daniel lets it go.
“If I could get away, I’d take Benjamin's hand and I’d run to the city,” He says instead and waits to clock Mike’s reaction. Mike's quick inhale is more a of stuffy sniff. He's gotten used to the barn smell, but his nose has been permanently plugged all summer. “But this farm will be mine someday, I can’t ever leave it behind. Not for love, not for anything.”
Benjamin. Ben to everyone else, but Daniel had a penchant for using full names. He’s a young man who works at the farm market where they bring produce every week. Mike has seen the glances, the closeness, the brief touches between them. So he isn’t necessarily surprised, but he is still physically buffering at it being acknowledged.
“That struck a cord, are you running from love, Micheal?”
Fuck.
“Why don’t you leave?” He asks, because he’d rather pry now then deal with his own shit. “Why don’t you take Ben and just go, you clearly hate the farm.”
It was true, the only thing Daniel hated more than the work was his own father. Nothing tied him here. Daniel simply shrugs.
“This is what I know. I might not like it but I’m too stupid to go do anything else. Not like you, writer boy. You got college ahead of you yet,” He takes another sip, eyes resigning into the only future he knows. “I’ll inherit this place, but only if I stay. I got nothing else.”
Mike doesn’t want to think about college. It’s been on his mind far too much recently. The summer has slipped away from him and with each day it's gotten harder to consider going back. It’s gotten harder to think about all he has left behind.
“If you could go. Would you really take Ben with you?” He asks.
Daniel smiles, looks up to the rafters with a wistful gaze.
“I wouldn’t leave without him. We’ll never have a real life here. I’ll probably marry some girl and have a family to help run the farm. Maybe he will too. But as long as we can manage it, I’ll stay by him.”
Mike swallows hard against the lump in his dry throat. What did Will think of him for leaving? He hadn’t ever meant to be gone this long. If he’d asked, would Will have come with him?
It didn’t really matter though, because Daniel was right. He had run away from everyone. But Will especially. He’d run away from what they could be.
“So. Your love…are they still in Hawkins?”
Mike nods, his jaw flexing.
“Yeah, for a few more days, probably. Then, New York, for school,” It's another thing Mike doesn’t want to think about. In a few more days Will would leave Hawkins again. This time, Mike wouldn’t even be there to say goodbye.
Daniel lets out an impressed sigh, shaking his head longingly.
“Why did you run from —” He trails off, waving a hand, looking for a name.
Mike inhales deeply. Maybe he could lie, but it wouldn’t really make sense. Besides, Daniel had just opened up to him. If he could do the same now, maybe he had it in him to be brave.
“Will. His name is Will. Or, William, if you want,” Mike utters, adding that last part because he knows Daniel. Daniel only takes another sip from his bottle, seemingly unaffected by this admission. “But he is out, you know, to our friends. He has all these plans of going to art school and finding himself, finding his people - Like, were his people too. But we aren’t -” He stops, heaving a sigh. Mike doesn’t even know what he is.
“It took a long time for him to be okay with all of that, being gay. I wasn’t there for him, not like I could have been. I should have been, he is my best friend. Before anything else, he is my best friend. And I just — I panicked, I was so consumed by all of it. I just left. I didn’t even say goodbye,” His voice gets shuddery, forcing himself to stop and try to regain composure.
“So you only just realized this about yourself?” Daniel asks with a kind, understanding expression. Something you give someone when they are being too hard on themselves.
“No.” Mike shakes his head. Daniel drops the understanding look for confusion.
Good. I don’t deserve it.
“I’ve known for years. How I felt about him. Just that it was different at first, than it was with our other friends. Then I started to understand what it meant. But I didn’t do anything about it. I didn’t think I could. And when I finally did do something-" He takes a deep breath. His eyes unfocus as he looses himself in the memory of that night. "It was like I’d cracked open a shaken can of soda. Everything I had avoided just exploded infront of me. It was like I was drowning -"
He stops, shakes his head. Thats not quite right. He shifts the sweaty bottle of beer to his right hand to wipe his left on the thigh of his jeans, only to pass it back and do the same thing with his right. It's like he cant find the right words. Like there isn't words to put to these feelings within him. Drowning makes it sound like kissing Will was bad. Like the kiss its self was the problem, not Mike himself.
"It's like he is oxygen but I was too afraid to breathe," Mike says at last. He nods to himself, dragging his bottom lip through his teeth. "He deserves so much better than that. He deserves to find someone who knows what he is, and isn’t afraid. He deserves someone who can love him freely. I – couldn’t do that. So I left.”
He knows he still isn’t really making sense. He's leaving things out. He can’t touch any of the stuff about El. Not around Daniel. But even Mike, who has the full picture can’t really make sense of it.
“Could you now?” Daniel asks.
“I – I don’t know.” Mike shrugs. But, God, do I want to, He thinks. I want to be enough for him.
“If you love this boy - William - then you should tell him. No use deciding what he does and does not deserve. He’s grown. He can handle it.”
Love.
Of course he loves Will. He’s loved him since they were sixteen. Probably before that, but when he looks back on it all. When he pays all the moments between them that his brain registered as more -- a too long hug before Will moved away, a locked gaze when Mike appolgized for being distant, brushing shoulders and firm pushes to the chest -- seeking that moment of realization. The moment it went from this hazy, undefined thing to love. He always came back to that night, standing in the MAC-Z, watching Will become a sorcerer. Watching Will save his life — and Robin and Lucas too, of course.
But, he thought El needed him in a way that Will didn’t, back then. References to a passing crush, which Mike couldn’t even be certain was himself, that Will realized he was better off without. He could tell El was struggling, slipping. So he tried to be a boyfriend to her, and a best friend to Will. How it was supposed to be. But he could never reach her, not really. It was like the girl whose words Will repeated in the back of that van was entirely different from the one standing before him. Maybe she was, she’d been through so much. But he thought, if he could just get them both through this, get them both to the other side. They would have a chance to fix things. They would have a chance to make things right.
But El didn’t make it out. He didn’t even tell her he loved her. She deserved to hear that, even if he didn't mean it in the same way. His love for her hadn't felt like this. He’d never felt like this for anyone.
For a very long time, he thought he didn’t deserve to.
“I do, I love him,” Mike says finally, and despite it being something he has known for years, it knocks the wind out of him. Daniel just smiles.
“Then go. Go get him and get out of here, get out of Hawkins together,” He waves his beer bottle dramatically towards the barn door, proped open to let in the breeze as much as the bugs. Mike looks in the direction, presses his lips thin and ponders it. Isn't he too late?
“But – even if he feels the same way. Even if he forgives me. I start school in Pennsylvania in a few days. We can’t start –” He can’t bring himself to say a relationship. “We can’t figure this all out long distance. I’ve blown my shot.”
Daniel gives a noise of disregard. Like Mike’s concerns are nothing in the grand scheme.
“A few years of long distance for the chance of a lifetime together? You still have that shot. You should take it.”
It sounds too good. It sounds unrealistic. Mike has never pegged Daniel for an optimist. But then again, most people wouldn’t have thought Mike to be one himself, and he used to be. There was a time that even in the face of darkness, he’d been the encouraging voice of the group, planning, rallying, leading. The heart of the party, maybe.
“I don’t know…” He says, shaking his head. It feels floaty, but his beer is still mostly full. Drunk on emotions, a desperate flicker of hope that Daniel seems eager to fuel, love.
Daniel actually rolls his eyes, and tosses his own empty beer bottle in a nearby trash can. It lands with a shattering sound as it hits against countless others. A cow in the stable moos in offence behind him.
“So what? You haven’t faced nothing scarier than a three hour drive in your privileged life, Micheal?” Daniel leans back, arms crossed with a challenging expression.
Mike knows he’s trying to get a rise out of him. But of course it works anyway because Jesus, wouldn’t you like to know exactly what I’ve faced? A flash of fury rises in his chest, hot and tumultuous, and unfairly aimed at Daniel when it should be directed at the universe in general.
He’s suddenly a ball of energy, leg bouncing, fingers twitching. He breathes deeply and tries to channel that fury into something else.
“I think I can actually see the wheels turning in your head!” Daniel laughs, Mike sends him a glare. “I’m serious! I think I see smoke coming out your ears,”
“Shut up!” He stands when he says it and he knows he’s made his decision. His brow relaxes from its furrow and the corners of his mouth turn up. “I’m going.”
His heart pounds in his chest, mind still a bucket of uncertainties threatening to spill. But the fire in his chest will keep him going.
