new ocverse doesn't have a name but here's the new timeline for Etienne's backstory
cw: mentions of child abuse, csa/sexual abuse/rape, attempted and successful murder, drugs/alcohol
Etienne Fay is raised in an abusive household until he's 13, when his parents agree to let him move into an apartment owned by Bryan Kennedy, a family friend who is a police officer and prominent/trusted member of the community
soon after moving into the apartment (within a few months) Bryan begins sexually abusing Etienne
at age 16, Etienne learns that Bryan is also abusing his adopted kid Kouki, and possibly other kids as well
one night, while Bryan is sleeping in the apartment, Etienne grabs a knife from the kitchen and cuts Bryan's throat, killing him
Etienne is sent to a juvenile prison after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter, where he'll be released as soon as he turns 18
in prison, Etienne is attacked by a group of guards who were acquainted with Bryan. they rape him, cut his throat, stab him in the abdomen, and leave him for dead
Etienne is able to survive, seemingly by miracle, though he's permanently scarred both physically and mentally, and the guards are only given minor punishments relative to what they did to him
being visited in prison by Kouki, and seeing that their life has improved without Bryan in it, is the only thing that keeps Etienne from becoming completely disillusioned and hopeless
at 18, upon being released, Etienne is homeless for a while. during this time he becomes dependent on drugs and alcohol to suppress his pain. he does odd jobs and sex work to get by
while working a construction job, he meets Jacob Mackenzie, and they quickly hit it off surprisingly well. Mack offers Etienne a place to stay, since he's divorced and has some extra bedrooms at his house
after years of going to rehab, being institutionalized for some time, and being in and out of jail, Etienne is eventually able to get clean off of hard drugs with Mack's help and support, as well as getting a more stable job as a gardener
at 23, Etienne finally has the space and time to explore hobbies in his free time, and begin therapy so he can actually process the trauma that's he's gone through
also i didn't know where to put this in the timeline but I think Etienne's amputated leg is because of a congenital limb deformity rather than an injury, aka He was born that way. just seemed more fitting for him since he was never too bothered about it in the prev incarnation. also disabled ppl do sadly face abuse and SA more often than their able-bodied counterparts and since Kouki is disabled (legally blind) you could say targeting disabled kids specifically is a pattern of Bryan's
