Robert Jordan set to turn fantasy over its head, and one of his best subversions was having a female character take on the role of the doomed wise mentor, especially to the male protagonist. Moiraine occupies the role of the mentor/father who must die for the hero’s progression. If you think of the most iconic Sci-Fi/Fantasy characters under this trope, most (if not all) are men. And then there’s Moiraine. And I love that while her death is in service of Rand’s characterization, she isn’t fridged. Her end makes so much sense for her character development from book 1 up to book 5. She dies fulfilling her purpose: protecting the Dragon Reborn from the forces of evil. And she leaves quite the legacy behind her having killed TWO of the Foresaken despite not being the most poweful Aes Sedai. I love that RJ lets her death fester within the narrative, especially in Rand’s POV as his life immediately goes to shit once she’s gone. She truly embodies the meaning of Aes Sedai: “servant of all”. She’s such a force to be reckoned with and is easily one of the best written and most complex characters in the series. Moiraine come back to me, the kids miss you 😭

Ishamael: If I let Lanfear out that might make manipulating Lews Therin easier. But she’ll probably want me to let Asmodean out so she can use him in her schemes because she can manipulate him easily. And if let Lanfear out I should probably let Moghedien out so that Lanfear doesn’t try to take complete control over Tel’aran’rhiod and it’ll keep her annoyed that she can’t always get her way. But if I let Moghedien out I’ll have to let Graendal out because she’s the only one Moghedien will talk to, and if I let Graendal out I should probably let Sammael out because he’ll distract her enough that she’ll scheme against him and not me. And I should probably let Demandred out then to keep Sammael on the edge and paranoid that Demandred is scheming against him. And maybe I should let Semirhage out just so that they all stay in line…

A lot of Robert Jordan's modus operandi was this sort of cultural clash between characters, which also shows up in the conflict between Perrin "marriage-as-love" and Berelain "marriage-as-alliance." It's clear she's only interested in his proximity to Rand as a means to protect her small country, having previously been scared off from pursuing Rand himself as well as rejecting Mat as an option outright. The problem is that she has nothing that Perrin is interested in, he doesn't care about titles or the like prestige that would come with being married to a head of state, so she falls back on what she has been socially conditioned to assume men want which is selling her body. And, having been shown as willing to do anything to protect her country from the age of 16, and being shown as very confident in this, I doubt this is the first time she's tried this. Which, to me and imo, is a much more interesting (and much sadder) interpretation than just "oh she's a home-wrecker."
