ā You had taken the day to study, and get a head start on all of the subjects you could. Having tested into a higher level than your actual grade, you actually had to push yourself a bit with your studies now. If youāre going to balance this with a job, you need to get a head start.Ā
Just as youāre unwinding with some leisure reading, however, a boy approaches you. Youād been so focused you hadnāt noticed him before this point, quietly gathering up the courage to come talk to you. You look up from your book, expression pulling into the mask you bring out in these situations. But it gives way to a genuine expression of surprise as you see just who it is who is talking to you.
Ā Itās⦠like looking in a mirror thatās just slightly off, with eyes worlds sweeter than your own.Ā
āOh. Um, sure,ā you say, closing your book. You pause, slightly unsettled. He looks⦠so familiar. Where have you seen those eyes before? You try to shake the feeling, putting on a smile as to not let on that youāre troubled. Besides, people youāve never met look familiar all the time. Itās nothing to worry about, right?
āDid you need help with anything? Iām new here, but I can certainly try. The librarians are also pretty eager to offer guidance, Iāve found.āĀ
You look out over the ocean view of the library, where the sun has started to sink below the edge of the world. Itās getting late⦠you should go home soon.Ā
āIām Sohma, Yuki, by the way. Are you a student at Spirale University, too?ā
Ā Ā Ā š|Ā Ā As many questions as he had pending, his throat closed around them all the moment his father spoke in that soft, youthful lilt. Mutsuki knew heād be just another stranger in Yukiās eyes, and as much as heād tried to prepare for the blow, it hurt a thousand times harder than he could have imagined. Tears stung behind his eyes and he lift an arm to wipe across them before any could spill, feigning a yawn to pass the gesture off as fatigue. With permission granted he took a seat, inhaling a deep breath to compose himself.Ā
āĀ Itās really nice to meet you, Sohma san, Iām Mutsuki.Ā āĀ
He introduced himself back, omitting their shared family name for now. Words failed him again and he found himself grateful for Yukiās question, even if he hadnāt devoted much thought to how heād planned on occupying his time here yet. Everything was still way, way too confusing to focus on the quotidian.
ā Ā Not yet, but if youāre here, Iād like to try enrolling too.Ā ā
Mutsuki opened his book, unaware of how his comment mightāve come off as odd or not.
āĀ You know, back home Iām the Vice President of our schoolās Student Council, do you know if they have something similar at this university?Ā āĀ
