i just saw a post on reddit titled "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" and it was about OP clicking off a fic because they don't like the direction it's going in. slightly different context but can we all be more like this reddit OP. i think "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" should be the new "don't like don't read." dead doves may give you diarrhea but don't make that everyone else's problem.
sometimes being a fan of something means not wanting them to make any more of it
I don't know how to articulate this well, but I really fucking hate the way a lot of thin writers write fat characters. Like how men write women "breasting boobily" there is something so dehumanizing about how fat characters are often written. "He waddled", "he lumbered", the writer of the book I'm reading always mentions this characters "fleshy hand" when he does something with his hand. Like, we already know that he's fat. There is no need to describe everything he does as "doing it fatly".
*fishes this absolute treasure from the tags*
i did read a smut fic once where before the kinky sex started there was a stilted negotiation where they were like "this is the scene we've previously agreed to. im going to call you Mean Names and Hit You but its all pretend, do u remember ur safe word?" and it really felt like they were looking into the camera and saying I Consent and guys my penis was soft

i deserve a medal for this post. not because i was particularly funny but because i survived an onslaught of nearly one hundred gimmick blogs in the wake of this post popping off, and the fact that i didn’t try to track any of them down and snuff them out with my bare hands is a testament to my immeasurable strength and should be rewarded. at one point i had “the official letter h” add on to this post. you wanna know that blog’s gimmick? the really funny and original and worthwhile gimmick the official letter h blog had? yep you guessed it they just gave me the god damned letter H and then fucked off. only jesus knows the suffering i endured over that harsh winter, and he wept for me

ohhh man. apparently when you copy+paste stuff directly from claude into ao3 it includes code. which anyone can find. people have found it in big, popular fics in multiple fandoms 😬. also heated rivalry; some of which the authors fervently denied using AI. link to thread.
link to their complete findings for those without twitter
OK, I have questions. I am hugely skeptical of AI and do not want to see it used in fandom spaces, but this post fucking stinks and I don't trust it.
Fine, you've stated your reasons for posting this on an anonymous sideblog, whatever. I'm happy to stand ten toes down on my own views here, even though some of them are not that popular. You say that you're not one of the people who posted this, but are you connected with them? If so, are you willing to disclose that?
Why would the creators of this document not put any additional care into investigating the placement and frequency of AI usage in the listed fics? I'm not a fan of AI in any capacity, but to me there's a huge difference between using it for translation, formatting code, etc. rather than using it to generate actual writing. Is that what's happening for any of these works? I don't know, I have not yet had time to dig into the source code for all of them, but I'm not the one making an enormous callout post.
ETA: at least one of the called-out fics clearly just used Claude to generate the appropriate code to format something to look like a recipe. Again, this is a judgment call, but I find this infinitely less upsetting than someone using AI to generate fanfiction.
Corollary: why was it helpful to call out these specific popular authors? To generate hype for these posts? I think making the skin is great, because it allows readers to make choices about what they're engaging with, but archiving receipts and downloading copies of all of these in advance means that you spent a lot of time looking at the works of these specific authors and planning this. Why? If you could take the time to do that, why couldn't you take the time to look more critically at your own findings.
To be exquisitely clear, I do not personally want to read things that are generated by AI. If I suspect that something is AI-generated, I mute the author and don't recommend the fic. However, I'm not at all convinced that this is a good-faith effort at transparency in fandom, and I'm not going to assume that it's been posted by people with good intentions until I get a better explanation of all of this.
If you're someone who believes that anyone ever using AI in any capacity is a moral failing, I fully accept that as an ethical stance, and maybe this post is exactly what you need. But I spent too many years in the dungeons of fandom_wank to uncritically get up in arms when someone anonymous posts something deliberately inflammatory in a way that's clearly written to provoke a specific emotional response.

Sound designing a vampire being hit in the face with a shovel is... challenging. Who would've guessed.
[Audio transcript: Ben Galpin voicing Jonathan Harker from Dracula by Bram Stoker. He says, "There was no lethal weapon at hand, but I seized a shovel which the workmen had been using to fill the cases, and lifting it high, struck, with the edge downward, at the hateful face," followed by a cartoon "bonk" and the Wilhelm scream. End transcript]

holy shit okay may have found a game-changer for web searches...with duckduckgo it's easy to turn off the ai features permanently, but regardless of engine there's the increasing problem of the search results themselves leading mostly to ai-generated articles on random ghost websites that say a lot without any information, and then the information they do give is contradictory or otherwise just wrong. this is especially a problem for me when trying to search for, e.g., a current list of the best products in a certain category.
finally searched for a solution and there IS in fact a giant hand-curated list of sites containing this content. it can be imported to ublock origin on desktop or mobile, and even can be used on iOS via the ublacklist extension in the safari app. it's updated regularly, and importing via the link as described should allow those updates to go into effect automatically.
i've only tested it a little bit, but after importing the list and repeating my duckduckgo search for backpack recommendations, my top results now lead to websites that appear to be linked to actual organizations in some form, with an "about us" page and the name of a founder and everything. the text is still often a bit wordy and SEO-optimized, but it now has actual recommendations that are relevant to the query. BIG IF TRUE???
please do not start talking about The Definition Of Art on this post, or Whether Human Creations Have Souls. i am very tired.
once I added this it took me 15 minutes to find a backpack that met my needs and order it with free shipping. I feel reborn
all you new fandom members need to QUIET DOWN oh my god you're going to get us KILLED. we're happy to have you but if you keep talking about BULLSHIT like PUBLISHING fanfic for MONEY, Anne Rice is going to come back from the dead to KILL US. looking at YOU, maurauders fans, heated rivalry fans, byler fans...out here giving out interviews to news channels SHUT UP. we're going to have to start setting off firecrackers to keep the rent down.
At a time when Netflix is getting roundly criticized for forcing its shows to treat the audience like we have all of two brain cells to rub together, The Vampire Lestat is out here volleying everything from 70s gay references to 1700s Dutch Republic references at the speed of light while saying, "You don't get it? Well, that's a fucking you problem."
And I love that for us.
I thought about just tagging this 'nuff said, but it's not.
I want to say something to all of the women under 50 on this site. Ready? You do not have to be over 50 to start taking up space.
Can I make that blink? Is that a thing Tumblr can do? Because, seriously. The sooner you believe you are allowed to take up space, the better life will be.
Not to be all "the children have forgotten the sacred texts!" but I just saw someone refer to a ship between two people who are good friends in canon as a crackship.
Hon. No. Crackship doesn't just mean "not canon". It's difficult to imagine two people who spend significant canon time together as a crackship. Crackship is when you write Galactus getting fucked by Tony the Tiger.
Gotta say, my absolute favourite notes on this so far have been the number of people congratulating Tony on his rebound from the Grinch.
