Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men examine Etrogs, lemon-like citrus fruits, for blemishes at the Mea Shearim neighbourhood in Jerusalem, Israel, on October 5, 2014, ahead of the upcoming week-long Jewish holiday of Sukkot, the feast of the Tabernacles. The Etrog is one of four species used in rituals during the week-long Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which begins on Wednesday at sundown and commemorates the exodus of Jews from Egypt and the fourty years of wandering in the desert.

This man is my favorite person in the world (along with this being one of my favorite photos I’ve taken.)  He owned a storefront restaurant in Safed and they were like flatbread wraps with fresh goat cheese and herbs and vegetables and zhug. Oh my goodness, and he sang too!

We were in a small city named Tsfat, visiting this synagogue. Everything there was made with bright beige brick- it looked so clean I almost didn’t want to walk on it. There was also bright blue trim everywhere you looked- around the fences, handles, window coverings…it was beautiful.
