[spoilers?] replaying mafia 2 for the 1628637 time and (despite not being at this particular part yet) i keep thinking about vito getting stuck with henry’s car after his death. (and “stuck” as in like.. a scar that’s permanently etched itself to your body.) vito just.. having nowhere to put it.

i think… the unfortunate thing about sam is that he isn’t flexible, emotionally. his trials come from the fact that his entire complex remains engrained in loyalty. he needs 100% of it or else he’s just like, hey, i know i’ve known you practically my entire life but unfortunately, i need to put two bullets in you now! —and it isn’t even out of any targeted malice (at least not intentionally) because sam, hand to heart, loves So deeply. he entrusts parts of himself in you when you enter his life. he expects you to be in-sync with him, to walk each of his steps in tandem. but the moment - the Second he learns you’ve wronged him he just.. can’t let it go. the family is his life, his blood, him. i think for sam, when he talks about any increment of the family with you, he expects you to keep it to your chest, to your grave. so when, for example, michelle started gossiping to the other girls - it was easy for him to cut her out of his life. it showed him that, maybe, his love (platonic or otherwise) wasn’t truly reciprocated. he’d given the deepest part of himself - as small as the information may have been - and she ran with it.
