VAANI eps 3
A week passed, I have been training with Edo and Myriani. It is very obvious that I have improved considerably. Well, at least I have more control over the powers that Caruer given to me. It was nice that it boosted my confidence.
Not to mention, I was experienced enough to get through an exam and receive my member card. As expected, my Rank is the lowest one despite my powers. But I’m not complaining. Taking it slow should be great for me since this will be my first time to an actual combat.
“Now that Miss Vaani have received her member card, we should have no problem going through with this quest.” Edo pulled out the quest he took a week ago with Myriani. I haven’t get a closer look on what kind of quest he took, so I decide to check it.
“In the Grimmire village, there has been changes in the dungeon near that village, the Obsidian dungeon. Vines have been seen to start growing out of the dungeon’s entrance. Try to find the source and eliminate it. Guild’s note: from our source, this vine may be Crimson Vine. Grabbing one of its vine should be enough as an evidence.” I read out loud of the quest. That is definitely serious matter considering this dungeon seems close with this particular village. “How long we can reach this village?” I feel like we’ve wasted so much time because of my training and it will going to waste more time if this village happen to be far away.
“If we just walk here, it could take 3 days.” Despite this situation, Edo and Myriani looks calm, like this is something that does not need for them to be in a rush for. “But don’t worry, we have a way to get there faster.” She added, as if it was an attempt to calm me down. She then proceed to grabbed my hand and hold onto it tightly. And then she grabbed Edo’s hand with her other hand. “You might want to close your eyes on this.”
I was confused, but if they truly have a way to get to this location faster, I should really trust them for now. Sighing, I closed my eyes and my hand held on hers tightly, as if making sure her hand did not slipped off from my hold. I don’t know what they were doing. I heard some noises and I feel like my head was spinning for few seconds before it stopped. The atmosphere and air around me feels different.
Did one of them... just did a teleportation magic? This sensation is very strange to me. I can’t even find a proper way to describe it. It feels like when it just rained a minute ago and suddenly it start to become sunny out of nowhere. I think that is the proper way for me to be able to explain it. “You can open your eyes now, Miss Vaani.” It was Edo’s voice. I was nervous, so I take some times to open my eyes. And sure enough, we were in a completely different place, I assume we’re in Grimmire village gate.
I was frozen. I think this experience still just way too much for me that it took me some time to take it all in. I can feel Edo and Myriani stare at me with amusement. I blinked few times, taking a deep breath and exhaled loudly before I finally feel a bit calm now. Teleportation should be one of the magic that I need to get used to now. As far as I know, only few select of people who can master it. “What should we do now?” I asked, since they’re are experienced adventurer, I should let them lead me here.
“We need to talk with the locals. Though it would be great if we could talk with the village head as well.” Edo suggested with one hand on his hips. “I would like to enter the dungeon as soon as possible, but we can’t be too reckless now.”
I nod my head in agreement. I feel bad that it took us this long, but from what I can remember, there is usually a time limit they can put if it’s such a crisis. So, if they didn’t put any deadline, I believe we should be fine. Seeing that I regain my composure, the three of us walk into the village.
The villagers definitely looks busy. It looks like as if they’re trying to get something done as soon as possible. Not to mention, I see a bunch of guards and authorities thorough the village. I looked around, completely distracted to take everything in until I bump into Myriani who were walking in front of me, who just stopped without warning.
I groan softly and look in front of us, only to see the guards blocking our way. They stare at us with so much intimidating. “Who are you and what do you need here?” one of the guards asked. His voice is loud and clear, as he does not need to repeat himself.
Edo decide not to do anything that will only raise suspicion. He raised his hands, Myriani do the same. I was confused but I decide to copy them. “We’re are adventurers. We’re here because we accept a quest related to this village.” Efo explaining himself. He know that if he pulls the quest paper right now, the guards will definitely on alert. But if he explaining himself first, he will be given an opportunity to show an evidence for his statement.
The guards looked at each other before nodding. “Let me see the quest to confirm it.” It sounds like a demand to me. Though seeing our situation right now, we don’t really have any other choice. Using only one hand, Edo slowly and carefully took the quest from his pocket and held it out for the guard to see.
The guard take a closer look of the quest, didn’t even bother to take it away from him. He nodded and hummed, probably to himself before lean away. “I have confirm the quest and it is indeed fit to the situation happen in this village.” The guards sounds more friendly now. It seems like they have confirmed we are not a bad people as their demeanor looks more relaxed now.
“Can you explain further about what happen here?” I’m surprised how calm and collected Edo was. I would probably scared shitless if I’m on my own here. I would panic so much that I can’t think properly on what to do. I just admire him more now.
The guard nod his head, agreed to explain the situation the best to his ability. “Obsidian Dungeon have shown a sign of being unstable as of late. So far we can handle things on our own, but this time, we can’t risk it. We simply have no idea what kind of monsters that thing was and I have a feeling that something must’ve happened in the deeper level of the dungeon.” The guard explained while the three of us listened to him carefully and closely.
“I see... so even if we handle Crimson Vine, there is a possibility that more monsters will start coming up to the surface.” I heard Myriani muttered, she probably was thinking out loud, but she make a pretty good point. “I think we might ended up need to go deeper into the dungeon, Edo.”
Edo sighed as he scratched the back of his head. “Well, Obsidian Dungeon aren’t necessarily the most dangerous one, as the deepest floor for this dungeon is most likely 20 floors. This dungeon is the most suitable for the new adventurers.” He looked at me, like as if he’s emphasizing something from his sentence. “But if powerful monsters start appearing, we need to handle it.” He still stare at me with a smile before winked at me.
“We don’t know how long this will take, so we might as well need to do some preparation. Specifically food!” Myriani looks serious. While I have seen how hyper and excitable she can be, I still will never be able to fit that energy at all.
“How in the world you can handle her at all?” I literally had to ask Edo. Just seeing her cheering, running and jumping makes me wonder where all of these energy come from.
Edo laughed at my question, amused. He stare at Myriani, like as if he appreciates her just simply existing. “...because not everyone have the same privilege and freedom like her. Despite being a Guild Officer, that did not stop her to express herself.” I looked at him, slightly surprised with how he answer my question. Staring at Myriani, I start to remember why I’m here to begin with.
I need to make this world safe enough for people to express their feelings and emotions freely. I believe with Myriani forming a contract with Edo, she can have this amazing life. I don’t know what kind of life she have to go through before these, but I don’t dare to ask nor it was my business at all. “...I suppose you’re right.”
--
For the past week, I have been stuck with Myriani clinging to me. While it’s nice to have company... that’s not always nice for an introvert like me. I don’t necessarily hate other people’s company, but I need to be alone to recharge my social energy with others for tomorrow. So, I have convinced Edo and Myriani to let me have a room for myself. I even offer to pay for my own room.
Not only I need to be alone after stuck with the same people for a whole week, I also need a lot of thinking as well. As I have a goal here, and that is to bring peace into this world, I can’t stay with Edo and Myriani for too long.
I grabbed the map I bought, found out I have been teleported by Caruer in Umiviel. It’s quite small compared to its neighbour regions, but this place somehow the most popular place for its well constructed dungeon.
West of Umiviel is Kruviel while the east side is the Sliviel, the largest between the two. I still don’t know the details about these two regions. Well, the book I bought explain it, but they’re using such complicated and elaborate way to explain it that it’s only confuses me even more. Not to mention, while I kind of understand this world’s writings, I still need some times to adjusts all of these.
Though, my eyes have been staring at this small spot of region between Sliviel and Senarcahya. It’s very small, even smaller than Naya, the smallest region amongst other regions. Based on my basic knowledge about this region, it seems like there is a Demi-Human have take this one region for himself. No one was able to defeat him due to he have a power to defeat an army or two. The casualties is just too big for people to sent another army, thus they left that place alone.
No one was willing to claim this particular land. And this Demi-human have manage to maintain his own region no problem at all. Many rumors claimed that this Demi-human might be the new Demi-God for this particular region.
I knew right away this region is mine. This region doesn’t have any name too, but it has been labelled as dangerous region by people. Not many people was capable of getting closer to this region as it was blocked off by some kind of barrier magic. Not to mention, the aura that was emanating from that region makes other people and even monsters avoid getting close as well. I can see they are very protective of their place... which is make sense.
If this Demi-human is very powerful... I can definitely try to convince them to form a contract with me. After all... in order to bring peace into this world, I need allies. I need a bunch of powerful allies to help me and also a base. I need a place that belong to no regions and no one. So... I feel like this dangerous zone really calling me.
“Okay... once I’m done with this quest, I will leave...!” I feel determined. While not everything will went as I was expected, I still want to stay optimistic about my situation. I’m still novice when using magic, but I believe everything that Edo and Myriani taught me should be enough to get me around somehow.
--
The next day, I went out with Edo and Myriani, getting some preparations before finally headed to the dungeon. “...is this normal?” I can’t help but asked regarding the monster’s behaviour.
“This is usually happen because something is wrong within the dungeon. So we need to defeat this monster and then we will find the source of the problem... even though it wasn’t mentioned in the quest. But it’s Guild Officers duty to handle this kind of problem.” Edo answered my question with so much confidence.
“Is it okay for me to be in this duty as well?” I feel like I might ended up get in the way. While I have been doing pretty well in combat, I still don’t have enough confidence in myself.
“It’ll be fine. Even novice adventurer tend to run into strong enemy above their rank. You just use this opportunity to get better and to gain your confidence.” I was surprised that Myriani noticed about that. I guess after staying in the same room for a week make her notice even the smallest thing regarding me. I feel a bit embarrassed now. But she make a good point. Another thing about combat is that I should be more confident. If I second guess everything, I might ended up getting killed.
I’m still scared, but I still want to do it. Thus, we went into the dungeon, make sure to cut every vines that get in the way of our path. Edo warned me to not touch any the red spot of the vines as it will latch onto my skin and suck on my blood. Though I wore a glove, so it should be fine for me to grab onto it.
It took us some times, but we eventually reached the main floor. The vines seem stretch so far deep, so we decide to use the vine as a guide to lead us to the source of this monster. “This dungeon has 20 floors. In floor 5 and floor 15 there’ll be mini boss, but in floor 10 and 20, the big boss will be there. So, if there is a big monster outside of those floors, meaning that there really is changes.” Edo explained while he scanned the whole dungeon with his magic.
I was curious about this scanning magic, I tried using it, but I don’t even know how. There might be more magic that I hadn’t known before all of these. I need a mentor. But I can’t ask Edo for more help. He already teach me the basic, so the rest I need to learn by myself or finding someone who willing to taught me that.
As soon as Edo finish scanning the dungeon, he sigh. He looks conflicted as he crossing his arms over his chest. “Hmm... this is weird...” he muttered, probably to himself.
“Did something happen?” Myriani and I stare at Edo, curious what he found from his scan. Edo glance at both of us, though he looked like he was a bit hesitant to tell both of us.
“...there appears to be Demi-human nearby the Crimson Vine. And... I don’t know how to explain it, but it looks like as if they’re controlling the monster?” Edo sound unconvinced, like he wasn’t even sure what he was seeing. He rubbed his chin, thinking of what he needed to do but then sighed once more. “We should just get there and check it out ourselves. The monster have reached floor 5, so it shouldn’t take that long.”
Myriani nodded and the two of them walk ahead of me. I was scared. I honestly really don’t like dungeon too much. The place is dark and there are just too many places a monster could hide and sneak to ambush me. I get super paranoid and jumpy just being here. Having Edo and Myriani makes me feel a little bit better, but I wouldn’t even want to get into this place all by myself if I could help it. I clutch on my knife close to my chest, making sure that I’m ready for any fighting I have to do. Though, I also put up barrier on myself as I don’t want anything sneaking on me and I ended up getting injured.
“Are you scared?” Edo looked at me with amused look. While he wasn’t, I feel like he’s mocking me with that look.
I pout, trying to relax myself but our current setting makes it difficult for me to do that. “Of course I am. While there might be some good treasures here, I still don’t like dungeon.”
Myriani and Edo look at me with amused look now. It feels embarrassing when they clearly having fun seeing me scared of this place. Though I’m just happy they didn’t say anything further about it.
We went deeper, running into small monsters that the two of them told me to fend off in order to improve my combat skill and eventually we reached the floor 5. I feel like this floor is indeed designed for mini boss with how big this floor is. Unlike other floor leading to this that just small hallways.
In the middle of this floor, I saw Crimson Vine and... a small girl tied up on Crimson Vine’s chest. She looks unconscious. “Is that the Demi-human you were talking about?” I just had to make sure. He said the Demi-human were the one controlling the monster, but that’s not how it looks like here.
“Well, I am as confused as you are.” Edo start pulling his sword out as he is on stance now, ready to fight any time. “Regardless, we should try to save them.” He said before start charging to Crimson Vine. Myriani pulled her knife and follow him after.
Me, on the other hand, wasn’t really sure what to do here. While it’s obvious that I need to help them, I had a feeling they should be strong enough to defeat this monster. But I can’t possibly just stay still and do nothing. Even if I do decide to charge in, I had a feeling I’m just going to be in the way for both of them.
I look at the way they fought. While it seems like Edo wanted to save that Demi-human, he was so focused on cutting down more vines that keep regrow. It feels like both Edo and Myriani was having a difficulty and overwhelmed by the infinite vines. But... I have keeping my distance. The monster clearly was distracted by two opponents that clearly strong for it.
I have my chance here. I could definitely sneak close to this monster and save that Demi-human. Putting my hood on in attempt to hide my clearly stood out crimson hair, I start to run around the monster, trying to find its blind spot. I’m just glad this monster is not big, though the girl this monster held captive is just small... like, really tiny. I have heard fairy is also a thing in this world, so I can only assume this Demi-human is fairykin.
Sneaking behind the monster, I tried to be quiet. Even with the noises that Edo and Myriani make from the fighting they’re doing, I’m sure that isn’t going to be enough to distract it fully. Edo and Myriani understood what I was doing and they’re trying so hard to distract it.
Just as I was about to strike it, I feel something wrapped around my leg. I gasped as I was just being lifted off ground, upside down by one leg. In this situation, I’m grateful I pick shorts, otherwise I would’ve been embarrassed the whole time in this situation.
“Ms. Vaani!!” Edo and Myriani called out for me as they realized Crimson Vine get a hold of me.
‘This is exactly what I mean I’d get in their way...’ I sighed, while I wasn’t very happy to be in this situation, I feel like I should scold myself to only make things difficult for the two of them. I look at the vine that was wrapped around my leg and I can see it’s trying to chewing through my boots and my socks. I probably should freed myself before this monster put any more damage on my clothing.
Thinking for few seconds, I proceed to use water magic and froze it with ice magic, effectively stopping them from destroying my boots. I use my knife and cut the vine, ended up making me fall off from a pretty tall height. I use wind magic to slow down my fall and let out a sigh of relief. I watched at the vine that I just froze and it didn’t take long for it to regrow it again. It seems like as if this monster gain a really tremendous magical energy to be able to regenerate its limb so quick. And I can only assume that fairy Demi-human might be the cause of it.
Which is another strange thing about that Demi-human. Fairy known generally to be the weakest Demi-human. But the fact that she could provide this Crimson Vine enough magical energy to keep regenerating itself is just a bit weird to me.
Regardless, I can’t just stay still doing nothing. I imbued some magic into my knife. I definitely do not want to get close to any danger if I had an option for it.
As soon as I finished imbued my magic into the knife, things should be under control after this. Looking at Edo, I had a feeling that he might held back because he want to test my power and combat in a real fight. While I don’t like he didn’t discuss it with me or it’s just something he come up with just recently, I just want to get this over with.
Knife in my hand, I ran towards the Crimson Vine. Every vines coming my way I cut it easily with my knife. Some of its attack scratch my skin, but I remain focus, keeping my eyes on the fairy. My plan is that at least to touch her.
As if reading my mind, the monster using as much vines as it could and block my view from the fairy. I clicked my tongue in annoyance. This monster is really smart. But this is exactly why I imbued my knife with my magic.
As soon as my knife stabbed into the vines that was used to block me from the fairy, it instantly frozen. I use the wind force to destroy the ice, along with the vines inside it, causing it to shatter. It will take less than 10 seconds for it to regenerate from being frozen. So, I use that small chance to grab the fairy, cut any restraints and just drag her with me.
The Crimson Vine definitely not happy for me taking the fairy away from its clutches as it screeching from anger and pain. Edo and Myriani soon regroup with me. Myriani immediately checking on the fairy, making sure she’s fine while me and Edo keeping our eyes on the monster with our weapon out. “So... do you have any plan?” I asked, now that we have successfully rescued the Demi-human, there should be nothing to stop him or me from holding back, right?
Edo didn’t response to me for a minute. He was staring intently at the monster, as if trying to find any weak point or any kind of flaws. “Living creatures usually relying on both brain and heart to keep living... so, we should focus on those two. How about you focus on trying to targeting its brain while I focus to target its heart?” that was the plan he come up with. It’s not a very concreate plan, like something he come up with because he don’t know what kind of monster we’re up against. But, if that is the best thing we can do right now, I might as well do it.
“...fine, you’re making it sounds like I can even reach that thing at all.” I have to leave some kind of comment to him and his plan. Edo just laughed before both of us charge in.
As soon as we did, more vines trying to get in our way. Edo will deal with the vines since he’d be facing the Crimson Vine head on while it is my job to sneak on it to attack its brain. It was really easy for Edo to get through those vines, so my assumption about him stalling is because he’s testing me. Well, it’s no use to think about it. We have a bigger thing to think about.
The ceiling of this floor is quite high and tall. So, using wind magic, I could float high enough to be above everyone else, including the monster. It was unsteady as being on the air is still hard for me. It also took me some times to reach a certain height and repositioned myself. But eventually, I get to the perfect place and undo my wind magic, effectively making me drop and fall.
‘wind and earth...’ I thought as I keep on dropping. I held my knife on both of my hands tightly, pointing it directly on top of Crimson Vine head. I see more vines attempted to stop me, but using protection magic, I could block and nullify any attack against me.
Eventually, I landed right on top of its head, stabbing it right on top of it. I don’t know if the liquid coming out of it is its own blood or the blood that it has sucked so far, but I can say for sure it was splattering all over the place, including on myself.
Pulling the knife out, I stab it one more time before I tried to drag it down, trying to split Crimson Vine open using my body weight and also the gravity magic that will pull me down even harder.
As soon as I reach the bottom, more blood splattering all over the place. At this point, my whole body is covered with full crimson blood. It smells pretty bad too, but I need this monster to die before I could clean myself up. “Edo, stab its heart!” I shouted as I know the monster probably was distracted by the pain from the open wound I make on it.
Edo didn’t hesitate, he imbued his own magic into his sword before just stab it where its heart at. The monster screeching. It was so loud that I had to cover my ears. I can even feel the whole floor shaking just from its screech. It stopped screeching and moving before its body fell to the ground that covered in pool of blood all over. I sighed, just realized how tense my whole body been. I put my knife away in it sheath and approached Edo. He look at me and greet me with a smile.
“Great job there. I guess you’ve improved pretty well.” He looks proud. Well, it’s just something I did without thinking. On the hindsight, doing that kind of thing can be considered as suicide and reckless because that Crimson Vine could definitely stab me through my stomach with one of its vines. I’m just happy I take so many precautions. “Though... your look right now is the most impressive here.” Edo tried to stifle his laughter but that only annoys me more. I know I’m not looking my best right now, but that’s because I have to fight for my life here.
Sighing, I use water magic using gesture magic and I was just doused with water, washing off most of the blood from my skin and clothes. Though, the blood have leaving a very noticeable stain all over my clothes and I just hate how my outfit looks now. Regardless, I should look okay for now and I will try to find a way to get my clothes back to its original state.
Edo and I went to Myriani and the fairy girl who is still unconscious. “So, how was she?” Edo get to his knee, checking the fairy girl closely.
“...she should be fine. Though, with the amount of magical energy Crimson Vine have absorbed for itself, she will be very weak and it will take a long time for her to recover completely.” Myriani using healing magic on the fairy girl, though even from a distance, I can sense how it was a very calming magic. “We need a magic transfusion...”
“...magic transfusion?” I believe it should be similar to blood transfusion, but it’s definitely an interesting thing I’d like to hear more.
“You don’t know?” Edo looked at me, though he doesn’t look all that surprised. “Our body functions with blood and magic circuits inside. Blood will keep your body functioning, but magic circuits will help you to be immune to the air in this world and also give us the ability to use magic.” Edo was trying to explain but it only confuses me more. Is something different in the air of Aliolas that I’m not aware of?
Sensing my confusion, Edo chuckle softly. “Magic circuits is not only something that everyone in this world has to have the ability to have powers and magic, but it also protect us from all the corrosion of the magic thorough this world. Let’s just say this world is like underwater. And you, as someone who does not have magic circuits, going into this world. You will be suffocated and eventually drowning. It’s basically like that.” While Edo have tried his best, I did understand a bit about what he was talking about.
Because this world have using magic as part of their daily life, it is not a strange thing if there’ll be some traces of magic all around. These traces of magic can be considered as corrosion for non-magic user. Their body cannot withstand the magic trace/corrosion and it will causing their body to burnt and combust.
‘You know... with so much of these risks about magic, I honestly glad I pick Knowledge of Magic from Caruer...’ it was a bitter truth, but if I’m so clueless about all of these, I might start doing something stupid. Regardless, we need focus at the matter on our hand. This fairy seems needing magic transfusion. I’m not even sure how the procedure goes. “How do you transfer magic?” I just had to ask, wondering if there is a way for me to help.
“The easiest way is forming a contract with them. But there is also a medical way. Some says magical circuits are basically same as blood transfusion. So, you might need to draw your blood for it. But obviously, your blood type need to be match, so it can be complicated.” Myriani explained as she seems finished using her healing magic on the fairy girl. “Though, normally we could regain our magic circuits eventually. But it will take some times.” She added while watching the fairy girl who is still sleeping.
“But with the amount of regeneration that Crimson Vine has done, I had a feeling it use a bunch of magic circuits of this fairy. So, one can say she might be in a very critical condition.” Edo added, he looks genuinely worried about the fairy. “We should bring her to the nearby clinic first until she regain her consciousness.” Edo suggested and both of us nod our head in unison.
