When organizations are in crisis, itâs usually because the business is broken.
âBut the corporate leaders we have interviewedâcurrent and former CEOs who have successfully led major transformationsâsay that culture isnât something you âfix.â Rather, in their experience, cultural change is what you get after youâve put new processes or structures in place to tackle tough business challenges like reworking an outdated strategy or business model. The culture evolves as you do that important work.â
Given the choice between a job candidate with a perfect resume and one who has fought through difficulty, human resources executive Regina Hartley always gives the "Scrapper" a chance. As someone who grew up with adversity, Hartley knows that those who flourish in the darkest of spaces are empowered with the grit to persist in an ever-changing workplace. "Choose the underestimated contender, whose secret weapons are passion and purpose," she says. "Hire the Scrapper."

The power of offline
Iâve been meaning to actually write a blog post for quite a long time. Today I feel that the right time has come.Â
Why now?
Today a man I knew died. He was a remarkable person - extremely kind, always very cheerful and ready to help. We worked together at my first workplace, a few years ago. We werenât really close, we didnât stay in touch after I left, but... his departure moved me a lot. And it moved me so much that Iâve decided to write this post.
The world we currently live in is all immersed in the digital. We are all used to conversations that are mediated by technology. And itâs an awesome world - vivid, dynamic and extremely exciting. And I love it this way.
My first workplace wasnât like that, though. Not that it wasnât exciting or dynamic. Rather it wasnât permeated with all digital stuff. It was filled with people who for numerous reasons didnât care that much about technology. Most of them (at that time) didnât own a smartphone, few didnât even use e-mail. And so mostly we just talked with one another. Worked together and shared experiences. Mostly offline. And while it didnât make me super close to all my coworkers, and I didnât become friends with most of them - it made me feel connected with them somehow. It made them mean something to me, even if I wasnât fond of all of them. To such an extent that when I was leaving that place, my heart was aching. And to such an extent that still, after all these years, I feel extremely saddened whenever I hear news like that.Â
There is no coming back to the just offline world, of course. But next time letâs just call instead of chatting on a messenger, letâs just meet instead of writing another e-mail, and just experience stuff. Together. Offline.Â

"Hey, are you busy?" We all know that when someone asks this question at work, there's only one possible answer. But maybe, just maybe, we're not actually that busy.
"I think right now the social currency of our time is that to be busy is to be relevant," said Tim Maleeny, chief strategy officer for Havas Worldwide. "It's arguable or debatable whether or not that's healthy or sustainable as a lifestyle, but it's the social currency of the day."
An inside peek at how we work and what we believe at HubSpot. This is part culture manifesto, part employee handbook and part diary of dreams.

The burdens of subordinates always seem to end up on the managerâs back. Hereâs how to get rid of them.
A great article from a 1999 issue about delegating stuff.
Despite its âageâ, still very much up to date.
While organizations wage wars for talent, it seems talent is at war with itself.
âOverwork is not defined by the amount of our day work occupies but by the amount of ourselves tied up to it. We âoverâ work not when we work too hard but when working becomes less of a means and more of an end. When meditation, exercise, sleep, holidays, and even parenting, are cast as tools to make us better workers.â
Super interesting article for all eager beavers out there!
