The Records of King Aemond I and Queen Maris Baratheon- Princess Vaella Targaryen
Princess Vaella Targaryen
Princess Vaella Targaryen, born Vaella Waters, was the final child of Lady Alyssa and King Daemon I Targaryen in 205 AC. She was the youngest of the ‘Lucky Bastards’ set of siblings, legitimized by their father Daemon I in 209 AC, giving his eldest son with Alyssa the land and titles of Highflame. Vaella was four when she became a Princess, and reveled in the glamour of it. She took after her mother, enjoying the fine Lysene silks and bright colors. She was a favorite of her father’s, as he found humor in her defiant and entitled attitude as a child. She often followed her older nephew, a future Aegon III, around like a lost puppy. She was a potential suitor match for him, but an alliance with Lys was favored with Lady Rhea Haen.
When she was fifteen, in 220 AC, she was betrothed to newly widowed Ser Steffon Tarth, the heir of Evenfall. Vaella assumed growing up she would be the lady of a great house, perhaps Lannister as she wished, and was disappointed with the match. Steffon was also six years older than her and already had three children, and Vaella had eyes for Ser Leoric Lannister, heir to Casterly Rock. In the Tourney of Kayce of 221 AC, Ser Steffon was beaten by Ser Leoric in a joust. Vaella was named the Queen of Love and Beauty by Ser Leoric after the victorious win, and Ser Steffon was left humiliated.
This angered Lord Quentyn Tarth, Steffon’s father, and he threatened the match. Lady Alyssa, whom wanted Evenfall as a summer home, had to go and reinstate her daughter’s marriage proposal. She was to wed Ser Steffon within the year, instead of the original three, and had to increase her dowry to nearly double what it was previously. This increased tensions between Alyssa and her daughter.
Many affections were shared between Ser Duncan the Tall, the companion of her nephew and close friend, Prince Aegon, and Vaella throughout the years. She had brought Duncan to his knees many times, giving her the nickname ‘the Tall’s Heart’. Vaella was caught in bed with Ser Duncan on more than one occasion, but was exposed to the court by a jealous servant who Vaella had flirted with in the past. Not a fortnight after that she was wed to Ser Steffon in early 222 AC.
Later that year she had a son she named Aemon, who had an uncanny resemblance to the Hedge Knight. He was nicknamed the ‘Bastard of Evenfall’ despite his father claiming Aemon as his own son. Aemon was not meant to be heir to Evenfall, as he had two elder half brothers. Nevertheless, he ended up being his elder brother, Pearse’s, heir in 250 AC after his nephew, Serwyn, died at age six. His other elder brother, Jasper, became a Septon, leaving Aemon as the heir.
In total, Vaella and Steffon had four children: Aemon (222 AC), Maeda (224 AC), Naera (227 AC), and Daemon (230 AC). Steffon became Lord of Evenfall in 229 AC. Lord Steffon fell ill in 230 AC. The sickness drew out nearly a year, withering him down to nothing. He died in 231 AC at 32. Vaella was a widow at 26, and one of the most eligible and beautiful women in the realm.
She moved to live at Highflame with her elder brother, Lord Viserys. Highflame, notoriously on the Western Sealine, was a day’s ride away from Casterly Rock. Her old flame with Ser Leoric reignited, despite Leoric having a wife and daughter. In 232 AC Vaella fell pregnant. During her pregnancy she resided at Highflame, forbidden to see Ser Leoric. Vaella received the news of Leoric’s death very late into her pregnancy, causing an early labor. She gave birth to her bastard daughter, Laena Hill. Heartbroken, Vaella stayed at Highflame with her children and refused to return to Evenfall. She vowed to never take another husband, yet bedded squires and servants on the low.
Vaella’s youngest son, Daemon, had died in 235 AC at the age of five from a sudden sickness like his father. Her nephew and close friend, Prince Aegon, invited her on a tour of the West and North leg of his royal progression in 235 AC to help get her out of this depressive slump. Reluctantly she agreed to go on the tour. Leaving Highflame for the first time in years, she began to find joy after the loss of her love Leoric. During her stay at Winterfell, the nephew of the late Lord Cregan, Brandyn Stark, caught her eye. He was tall, spindly, and sickly with a less than desirable demeanor. He enjoyed books about fantasy and war far more than any courtly conversation. Brandyn was trained with a sword, but not skilled enough to be knighted. He was thin, which was less than desirable in a husband in the North. Brandyn had never wed, as women found him repulsing. Despite that, Vaella took interest in his mysterious demeanor. Brandyn rejected her advances and Vaella left Winterfell on the tour. Vaella could not shake the thought of Brandyn.
She returned to King’s Landing on a whim, making amends with her mother who she was notoriously estranged from. She announced she wanted to wed again, and to the realm’s shock she requested Brandyn’s hand. Brandyn himself was confused but did not deny her request, wedding the Princess in 236 AC. Vaella adored Brandyn despite the backlash of the realm. They had two daughters, Alyssa (237 AC), and Vhaelora (241 AC). Together, the pair moved to the Reach. Brandyn found the weather much more pleasing and enjoyed reading the books at the Citadel during their time living in Oldtown. It is said they took residences up in Oldtown, Vinetown, Appleton, and eventually settled in Cuy, as Vaella loved the sea and wished to grow old on the coast.
Vaella was born a bastard, became a Princess, loved a Lannister, charmed a knight, was Lady of Evenfall, and married a spindly wolf. She was the daughter of King Daemon I and his paramour, Lady Alyssa, granddaughter of King Aemon I, Queen Rhaella, Prince Viserys, and Princess Lucenora. She is the great-granddaughter of King Baelon I and Queen Saera, and 2x great granddaughter of King Aemond I and Queen Maris.
Vaella had seven children, and members from houses such as Tarth, Penrose, Gaunt, Lefford, Mooton, Webber, Butterwell, Baratheon, Staunton, Hardyng, Brune, Chelsted, Corbray, Vypren, Merryweather, Bar Emmon, Bolton, Donniger, Redwyne, Hunter, Glover, and Fossoway can claim her as an ancestor. She notably is the great-grandmother of Brienne of Tarth (Vaella-Aemon-Selwyn-Brienne) and Lord Roose Bolton (Vaella-Naera-Grace-Roose).
She was said to enjoy the company of her family in her later years, enjoying time with her children and grandchildren. It is unknown what happened to Vaella, but she died before Robert’s Rebellion. Her ashes are interred in Sunflower Hall, with a statue of her with the sun in one palm, the moon in the other.
For her children:
Lord Aemon Tarth
Her eldest son, Aemon, became Lord of Evenfall Hall. He married three times. First to Louise Donniger, with whom he had a son named Godric and a daughter named Miryelle. Godric became a sworn knight, and therefore removed from the Tarth line of succession. Miryelle wed Argilac Baratheon and they had a daughter. Louise died in 247 AC, leaving Aemon a widow.
He then married Maddison Blackwood–their relationship was less than ideal. It was rocky, off and on. They had a daughter, Ysara, in 251 AC. Ysara went on to wed Lord Symon Staunton, becoming the Lady of Rook’s Rest. She had two sons and a daughter. The pair eventually divorced.
His final wife, Edwina Penrose, was scandalously his niece. They both came from Targaryen blood, and he was in desperate need of an heir. Edwina was young and beautiful, as many vied for her hand in the past. Together they had five children: Lyessa, Selwyn, Catelyn, Gregory, and Charles Tarth.
Lyessa was first wed to Antony Hardyng, heir to house Hardyng, and had three daughters with him. She was widowed in 282 AC, and went on to marry Lord Baelon Brune, third of his name, and became Lady of Brownhollow. They had one daughter.
Selwyn succeeded his father, becoming Lord of Evenfall hall. He wed Steffa Bulwer and together they had four children: Galladon, Arianne, Alysanne, and Brienne. Lord Selwyn is the current Lord of Evenfall.
Catelyn wed Lord Edwyn Chelsted, becoming Lady of House Chelsted. Together they had five children, three daughters and two sons.
Gregory died at six years old in 269 AC.
Charles, the current heir of Evenfall, married the beautiful Penelope ‘Penny’ Massey. The pair are known for their exciting balls at Evenfall Hall, and are a favorite of the smallfolk. Together the pair had triplets in 292 AC, one daughter and two sons: Tansy, Theodore ‘Teddy’, and Tommen Tarth. Their labor left Penny infertile, but the need for more heirs seemed irrelevant. Charles will succeed his uncle, Lord Selwyn, one day as he has no male heir.
Maeda Tarth
Maeda wed a second son from House Penrose named Jaysen. Together the pair had seven children: Edwina, Qarlton, Rebekah, Judith, Thoren, Julia, and Bryssa Penrose.
Edwina went on to marry her Uncle, Lord Aemon Tarth, and become Lady of Evenfall Hall. Together they had five children.
Qarlton’s fate is unknown.
Rebekah wed Lord Lancel Corbray and became Lady of Heart’s Home. Together they had three sons: Christian, Jayden, and Steffon Corbray.
Judith wed Lord Patrick Vypren, becoming Lady of House Vypren. She had two sons: Karl and Lord Lucius Vypren.
Thoren’s fate is unknown.
Julia wed Lord Orton Merryweather, becoming Lady of Longtable. They had one daughter, Gwynesse, whom Julia died giving birth to.
Bryssa, the prettiest of her sisters, wed Lord Alastair Bar Emmon, becoming Lady of Sharp Point. The pair had two children, Betha and Lord Duram Bar Emmon. Alastair was often gone in King’s Landing, leaving Bryssa alone to have a long standing affair with Lord Marston Mullendore. Bryssa and Marston had three children: Marston, Charlie, and Argella Storm. Lord Alastair died in 281 during Robert’s Rebellion, leaving Bryssa a widow. She vied for Marston’s hand, but he refused to divorce his current wife, Liya Frey.
Lady Naera Tarth
Naera wed Lord Jack of House Gaunt. Together they had five daughters: Lady Grace, Lynda, Vanya, Lady Lyrica, and Amanda Gaunt.
Lady Grace was sent to ward with her Aunt in the North. She fell in love with Benfred Bolton, future Lord of the Dreadfort. The pair wed and they had one son: Lord Roose Bolton, father of Domeric and Ramsay.
Lynda wed Richard Redwyne, having four children: Lord Jack Gaunt, Lewis, Olyra, and Sage Redwyne. Jack was born Jack Redwyne, but changed his surname to take the seat of House Gaunt after the death of his grandfather, Lord Jack. Sage went on to wed Rhogar Targaryen and was killed during the Targaryen Extermination. Lynda was widowed in 264 AC. She went on to marry Torgold Donniger, having a son and a daughter named Godric and Desmera Donniger. Lynda died in child labor with Desmera in 275 AC.
Vanya wed a future Lord Harris Hunter, but died before she could become Lady of Longbow Hall. Together they had a daughter, Tara, whom Vanya died giving birth to.
Lady Lyrica, who also went to ward in the North with her Aunt, wed Lord Allan Glover of Deepwood Motte. Together they had five children, two daughters and three sons.
Amanda wed Hanson Fossoway, heir to house Fossoway. They had three children, two daughters and a son.
Lady Laena Hill
Laena, beloved by her mother even though she was born a bastard, did well for herself. She was known for her renowned beauty with bright green eyes and a face covered in freckles. She wed the old and stubborn Lord Targold Lefford of Golden Tooth. Lord Targold was previously wed and widowed, the marriage had no issue. Laena was born a bastard, which already nearly rendered her a spinster. She was young and beautiful though, and Targold agreed to the union though it was loveless. Laena and Targold had four children: Vaella, Lord Leo, Septa Shaena, and Leonella Lefford.
Vaella’s fate is unknown.
Lord Leo was a young and strong knight with golden Lannister hair he inherited from his mother. Despite being enamored and obsessed with the beautiful Lady Joy Fell (who was six years his elder and very much not interested), he wed Lillith Erenford. Leo neglected Lillith in the marriage, forcing Lillith to reside at her family home more often than not. The pair had a single daughter, Lady Alysanne Lefford. Lilith died in 294 AC, leaving Leo a widow. He refused another hand, naming Alysanne his heir. Lord Leo died during the Battle of the Fords in 299 AC, drowning.
Shaena had been a devoutly pious child as early as anyone could remember. When she was ten, she was sent to Oldtown to become a Septa.
Leonella wed son of Lord Walder Frey, Lothar. Leonella and Lothar had four daughters: Tysane, Walda, Emberlei, and Leana Frey.
Alyssa Stark
Alyssa wed Gryne Mooton, a future Lord of Maidenpool. The pair were reported to truly love one another, despite both of them having affairs within the marriage. Together they had five children: Lady Vaella, Maryann, Horwell, Helena, and Brandyn Mooton. Alyssa died in 260 AC at the age of 23 from Lover’s Pox she contracted from one of her lovers, or her husband.
Lady Vaella went on to wed Lord Sebastion Farman, becoming Lady of Fair Isle. They had three children, a daughter and two sons.
Maryann’s fate is unknown.
Horwell, heir to Maidenpool, wed Katherine Whent. They had three sons. Horwell died during Robert’s Rebellion before he could become Lord of Maidenpool. When his father, Lord Gryne, died in 300 AC, his eldest son Martyn became Lord of Maidenpool.
Helaena wed Andrew Butterwell, heir to House Butterwell. Together they had two daughters, Alyssa and Ellsbeth Butterwell. Andrew died before he could become head of his house, and his daughters were passed over as heirs even though it was his wish on his deathbed for his daughter Alyssa to succeed him. The title was given to his brother, Antony.
Brandyn’s fate is unknown.
Lady Vhaelora Stark
Vhaelora wed Lord Francis Webber, Lord of Coldmoat. Lord Francis already had a previous marriage to Melynda Frey, whom died giving birth to quadruplets. The only son born in the quadruplets died in childbirth, leaving Lord Francis heirless. Vhaelora went on to give Lord Francis four children, one daughter and three sons: Vaella, Lyonel, Vincent, and Damon. Vhaelora and Francis’ eldest son and heir, Lyonel, as well as their youngest child Damon, died in 282 AC during Robert’s Rebellion. Lord Francis followed his son to the grave not even two weeks later, his second son Vincent succeeding him.
Lady Vaella remains unwed at the age of forty. She is the current Lady of Coldmoat.
Ser Lyonel, heir of Coldmoat, died in battle during Robert’s Rebellion in 282 AC fighting alongside his brother and father.
Lord Vincent became Lord of Coldmoat after his father died from his injuries. Before the war, he wed Rhaenys Targaryen, daughter of Lord Haerold of Redmere. She was killed during the Targaryen Extermination in 282 AC. He then wed Lady Vitalia Sunderland and they had a son named Lyonel, after his brother. Lyonel wed distant cousin Lady Dayella Gaunt, but died in 298 at the age of 14, heirless. The seat of Coldmoat then went to his surviving Aunt, Vaella.
Ser Daemon was known for his looks and strengths, and was very popular with the women in the Reach. He was betrothed to an Osgrey, but died in 282 AC during Robert’s Rebellion at age 17. It is said that many women wept on news that he had perished in war.
