Furniture has been a part of the human experience for many thousands of years. Evidence suggests that furniture was used as far back as the Neolithic period and daily life without it is unimaginable. So how has furniture changed through the ages? From the exclusive and luxury furniture of Ancient Egypt, to the functional and streamlined design of the Bauhaus – these animations take you on a fascinating journey through the evolution of furniture design.

Aerial view downtown from the Met Life Building, New York City
A spectacular aerial view of the expansive ruins of the Roman military colony of Timgad (Batna), Algeria. The landmarks which are prominent in this image are the magnificent triumphal Arch of Trajan, ca. 100 AD and the well-preserved ancient theater. (Photo: Geo Steinmetz/John Trikeriotis). .
#MapMondays! This amazing animation visualizes Manhattan’s growth over the last two centuries. Using census data, historical maps and aerial photographs the animation exposes the change in Manhattan’s built-up area population density from 1800 to 2010. The animation illustrates many historical narratives including the construction of the Ninth Avenue El and expansion of the Upper West Side at the end of the 19th Century; immigrants settling in Lower East Side from the 1880s - 1910s; the flow of residents to the outer boroughs and suburbs in the mid 19th century; and the gradual population increase starting in the 1980s after declining for half a century. While Manhattan may seem packed today, this animation proves it doesn’t even compare to a century ago! Credit: NYU Stern Urbanization Project. #MapMonday (at Lower East Side)

We found that if you make more road space, you get more cars. If you make more bike lanes, you get more bikes. If you make more space for people, you get more people and of course then you get public life.
